Stay Fit, Live Longer
It seems like common sense that regular exercise
is an important part of staying healthy.
But did you know that according to the U.S.
Department of Health & Human Services’
Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans,
an active lifestyle can lower your risk of early
death from a variety of causes, including heart
disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes and breast
cancer? Staying active also has the potential
benefits of improving sleep quality and
increasing bone density.
Make a Plan
The amount of exercise needed varies by individual,
but the guidelines recommend that at a minimum,
all adults should aim for two hours and 30
minutes each week, and children of 6 years and
older should aim for an hour of daily physical activity.
For adults, this exercise should be moderate-intensity
aerobic activity such as brisk walking,
ballroom dancing or gardening. Activities for
children could include swimming, jumping rope
or playing on playground equipment. If you have
an existing condition or disability, you should
consult with your doctor, but still aim for being as
active as possible.
Get Started
In addition to your exercise options at home, there
are Edison International facilities to help you stay
healthy. Southern California Edison’s Fitness Center
at the General Office 4 in Rosemead, Calif., aims
to educate and motivate its members to improve
annual Preventative Health Account
reimbursement can be applied to (and cover) a
12-month membership fee. Other facilities in the
company such as exercise rooms at the Rivergrade
Facility in Irwindale, Calif., and at various Edison
Mission Energy locations are also available.
“The key to seeing health benefits is doing
something you enjoy and becoming consistent
with your activity, whether it be weight lifting, biking
or walking,” said SCE Fitness Center Supervisor
Adam Bresciani. “Regular physical activity can
mean health benefits for years to come.”
Electrical
Grounding
wire
Grounding rod
To power an appliance, electricity
from a grounded three-slot outlet is
sent via a live wire (colored red in
the illustration) connected to the
outlet’s smaller vertical slot to the
inserted appliance plug’s live prong (red). Electricity
flows through the appliance back to the
plug’s neutral prong (white) and through the
outlet’s larger slot to a neutral wire. Both wires
connect to the distribution board, also known
as the circuit breaker panel or service panel.
A grounded outlet provides additional safety
by allowing another path for the flow of electricity
under hazardous conditions. Many appliance
plugs have a third rounded prong (green), called
the ground pin, which usually attaches via a
wire to the appliance’s metal casing. This plugs
into the outlet’s third slot, which is connected to a
grounding wire that attaches to the distribution
board. If the appliance malfunctions and becomes
electrified, the electricity is carried through the
grounding wire to the distribution board where it
trips the circuit breaker, stopping the flow of electricity
and removing the hazard.
A Day in the Life of a
Dispatcher
video extra To hear
Ashley talk about what she likes
best about her job and about her
Edison family connection, visit
http://inside.edison.com/j1112.
When the power goes
out, Ashley Felix, a dispatcher
within Transmission
& Distribution,
plays a critical role in
getting the lights back on. Her responsibilities
involve managing and processing requests
received by Southern California Edison
regarding possible hazards or anything that
causes a disruption with power distribution—
residential or business.
With more than eight years of experience
with the company, Ashley is well versed in
how SCE distributes power and supports its
customers. It’s her job to update and verify
the accuracy of the information received
on incoming trouble orders, whether it’s a
single customer calling about a loss of power
or a report of a car hitting a pole. “This
job requires continuous multitasking in a
fast-paced environment,” said Ashley. “And
there’s so much you have to learn about the circuits
and equipment—it can be really complex.”
When Ashley reports into Southern Distribution
Operations Center in Santa Ana, Calif., her
day begins by checking the status of any current or
incoming work orders. Orders from across the service
territory can be submitted directly by customers,
received by Customer Service and SCE’s website
or sent by internal requests into the Outage Management
System. Throughout the day she prioritizes
these requests
to make sure important
issues are dealt
with—for example,
assigned to troublemen
or line crews—
in a timely way.
Dispatcher
Ashley Felix.
Dispatch work requires monitoring
several screens, the phone and
radio communications.
Today, a substation advises
that a circuit is locked out, causing
a large power outage in Huntington
Beach. Ashley notifies a Kravik to troubleshoot a work order.
Ashley works with colleague Cathy
troubleman who checks the area,
including an underground vault that is flooded by
rain. To do the inspection, the vault is pumped to
remove the water, revealing a failed underground
cable. He isolates the problem, restoring service
to most affected customers. A line crew replaces
the cable and restores power to the remaining
customers. Ashley updates the system status and
initiates system call-backs to customers requesting
updates. “In this job, you’ve got to take it one
day at a time,” said Ashley. “A call could involve
serious injuries or major outages, and you need to
keep your cool.”
Diversity & Inclusion:
valuing
differences
Employees with a rich variety of viewpoints,
experiences and voices are one of Edison
International’s greatest assets. Creating
an environment where employees can learn and
benefit from each other’s unique perspectives is
critical to reaching the potential of this powerful
resource. Across the company, diversity and inclusion
teams help create a more inclusive work environment
and show employees at all levels how
to incorporate the principles of respect, value and
trust into their day-to-day work.
Embracing Our Differences
Most people see workforce diversity as different
races, genders and ages. But it also includes diversity
of thought, communication style, life experience,
educational background and other variables
that influence personal perspectives. Having a
diverse employee base benefits both the company
and its customers. Employees can connect
with customers better if their perspectives reflect
the customers and communities they serve. For
instance, customer service representatives can
provide better service if they can relate to their
customers and speak their native languages.
Inclusion means the appreciation of all people
regardless of their differences. In particular, inclusion
means respect, making employees feel valued
and establishing trust. People who feel respected
and valued at work are more efficient and engaged.
Inclusion is difficult to quantify or measure, but
the benefits are clear—engaged employees are
more productive, putting up to 400 percent more
discretionary effort into their work.
Making Diversity Work
Weaving these principles into the fabric of the
company begins with hiring. Along with its focus
on Equal Opportunity compliance, SCE is emphasizing
the importance of inclusion. “We want to
make sure that we attract candidates who can provide
a variety of perspectives,” said Eddie Moreira,
SCE Diversity & Inclusion.
When employees bring those perspectives to
their work, the company’s diversity becomes a
strength. “Employees who feel respected and valued
are more likely to share their ideas, which
drives innovation and creativity,” said Moreira.
“Respect, teamwork, continuous improvement—
it’s all right there in our company values.” The
Diversity & Inclusion department’s strategy for
turning this goal into reality starts with engaging
leaders. “Managers set the tone, so when they
make respect a priority and treat employees with
respect, it becomes the standard in the workplace,”
said Moreira.
Edison Mission Energy is doing similar work
to achieve the same benefits. Last year, EME’s
diversity task force evolved into a Diversity & Inclusion
Council, made up of employees from all
business units and levels. The council meets bimonthly
and fosters awareness of diversity and
inclusion through activities such as posting employee
profiles on Portal, developing educational
information, assessing how to improve diversity
get
involved
SCE: Employee resource groups
provide opportunities to network,
orientation, gender and other
topics of interest. Find out how
DiversityInclusionatEMG@
diversity and inclusion efforts.
in employee recruitment and increasing awareness
of different behavioral styles. “We want employees
to bring their whole selves to work so that
they’re fully engaged,” said Michael Perez, Edison
Mission Marketing & Trading’s Human Resources
director. “For example, introverted team members
need to feel comfortable expressing their opinions
so we can benefit from their perspectives as well.”
“Inclusion is about everybody,” said Kristi
Campbell, SCE principal manager, Diversity &
Inclusion. “It’s important for each of us to take
personal responsibility for living our values and to
encourage others to do the same.”
Green Home
provide
electronics.
Over the past two years,
in partnership with
Green Home Builder
magazine and nearly
60 other companies, Southern
California Edison designed and
constructed the Affordable, Buildable
and Certified Green Home in
the Orange County Great Park in
Irvine, Calif. It’s the first of its kind
to be built by SCE and sets new
benchmarks for sustainable energy
performance and cost-effective green construction.
Green Design
SCE designed the ABC Green Home to educate and
train builders, students, industry groups and visitors
about green home design that any residential
builder can duplicate. A partnership was formed
early on with Habitat for Humanity, which made
it possible for the designers to create a green home
that would also meet the organization’s design specifications
for future builds.
The home is net-zero, which
means it generates as much energy
as it uses over the course of a
year, achieved primarily through
solar panels on the roof. Construction
methods were used that help
with energy conservation, such as
walls lined with double-insulated
foam. In the family room is a control
monitor that keeps track of the
home’s energy usage and energy
demand on the grid. It gives the
homeowner updates on when to conserve during
peak demand and can dim or turn off lights, close
window blinds and reduce power consumption
throughout the home.
“This project is all about educating people,
from home builders to students,” said John Morton,
New Construction and Sustainability project
manager. “We even partnered with the Orange
County Regional Occupation Program to provide
high school students with hands-on construction
experience.”
The walls were framed by students in seven different
high school classes and shipped to the site.
In addition to classroom training, 12 students also
participated in on-the-job training with a skilled
professional, where they practiced real-world applications
of the building concepts they were taught
in class.
A Future Gift
The ABC Green Home will be on display in its
current location in the Orange County Great
Park until early 2014. After showcasing it to visitors,
the home will be handed over to Habitat
for Humanity. Early planning made sure that
the home would be handicap accessible to allow
Habitat for Humanity to donate the home to a
wounded veteran.
“Partnering with Habitat for Humanity was a
perfect fit,” said Gene Rodrigues, director of Customer
Energy Efficiency and Solar. “After we are
done showcasing it, we’ll be able to pass it along to
a homeowner who made a personal contribution to
our country.”
“The home is
net-zero,
which means
it generates as
much energy as
it uses over the
course of a year.”
SCE Assists in Transport of
Space Shuttle Endeavour
The retired space shuttle Endeavour traveled safely past Southern
California Edison distribution lines in Inglewood, Calif.
Edison International Chairman and CEO Ted Craver
(left) talked with Ernie Gutierrez of the California
Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at the Hispanic Heritage
Month Celebration.
On Oct. 12, Endeavour, NASA’s last constructed
space shuttle, was transported from a hangar
at the Los Angeles International Airport to the
California Science Center. Southern California Edison
Transmission & Distribution employees adjusted
power lines and telecommunication cables
to make way for the shuttle as it traveled through
four miles of SCE service territory.
“Our crews were honored to assist in Endeavour’s
historical final mission,” said Garry Garrigue,
T&D project manager. “They worked around the
clock to ensure our lines were safely cleared while
the shuttle passed.”
SCE Celebrates
Hispanic Heritage Month
Southern California Edison hosted the 2nd Annual
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at
the Energy Education Center in Irwindale, Calif.,
on Oct. 5. The event recognized the accomplishments
of Hispanic businesses, community partners
and suppliers who participate in SCE’s energy
and supplier diversity programs.
In September, SCE was also recognized by the
United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
for its support of Hispanic business enterprises.
In 2011, SCE invested more than $250 million in
Hispanic suppliers.
“Today’s celebration recognizes the importance
of Hispanic contributions to Southern California,”
said Edison International Chairman and CEO Ted
Craver. “It would be impossible to serve this region
without incorporating diversity into all aspects of
our business.” (See the related article on p. 10.)
Broken Bow
Wind Farm
EME President Pedro Pizarro (second from right),
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman (third from left)
and Nebraska Public Power District President Pat
Pope (right) with NPPD board members.
On Oct. 16, Edison Mission Energy dedicated
the Broken Bow wind project in Custer County,
Neb. The $145 million wind farm can produce
enough energy to meet the needs of approximately
25,000 homes in Nebraska and will provide seven
permanent jobs in the Broken Bow area. The
power it produces will be sold to Nebraska Public
Power District.
“Nebraska is a great place for wind energy
investment, and Nebraska Public Power District
is an outstanding utility partner to distribute that
energy to its customers,” said Pedro Pizarro, EME
president.
On Oct. 15, the Mobile Learning Center, a
demonstration unit modeled after Southern
California Edison’s Smart Energy Experience
exhibit in Irwindale, Calif., made its first public
appearance at the Emerging Technologies Summit
in Pasadena, Calif.
Powered primarily by solar energy and batteries,
the MLC was designed to educate customers on
SCE energy efficiency programs and demonstrate
advanced technologies, including smart metering,
LED lighting and Energy Star appliances.
“The unit is a culmination of nearly three years of
work involving dozens of individuals across multiple
SCE organizations,” said Richard Genece, principal
manager of Customer Energy Efficiency and Solar. “It
helps SCE maintain its leadership position in energy
efficiency education in California.”
SONGS Installs Unit 3
Emergency Diesel Generator
Technicians installed an emergency backup generator in Unit 3 at San
Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in October.
In last two weeks of October, a fourth and final emergency
diesel generator was replaced at the San Onofre Nuclear
Generating Station, bringing a close to a plan to improve the
reliability of the critical backup safety components. One emergency
diesel generator was replaced in 2009 and two more
were replaced earlier this year.
The 55,000-pound generator is connected to two locomotive-style
diesel engines, one on either end. The generator provides
backup power for safety equipment at the plant.
The importance of reliable emergency diesel generators was
made clear in the wake of events at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear
power plant in Japan, following the earthquake and tsunami
in March 2011.
This month, Inside Edison interviews
Southern California
Edison’s Senior Vice President and
Chief Nuclear Officer Pete Dietrich.
QWhat were some of your hobbies growing up
in Little Rock, Arkansas?
I was involved in all kinds of sports, and I also
began working at a very young age, starting with
a paper route with my two older brothers when I
was eight. I also took part in extracurricular activities,
from Junior Reserve Officer Training Candidate
courses to band. I still play the saxophone,
and I’ve encouraged my three children to get
involved with music.
QYou have your undergraduate
degree in naval architecture
from the Naval Academy
and an MBA from Tulane. How
did you go from there to a career
in the nuclear industry?
I knew at a very early age that I wanted to be in
the military, that I wanted to serve our country. I
chose the Naval Academy and really had my heart
set on being a pilot, but my eyes began to go bad,
so I knew that was out. Then I focused on getting
the best educational opportunity available to
naval officers and that was in nuclear power training.
And after five years of active duty service and
21 years of commercial nuclear power work, here
I am today.
Who are the people in your life who have
Q inspired you?
My parents have been a great inspiration to me.
Both of them lost their fathers when they were
young children and faced challenges, but they
raised some capable kids. I have two older brothers,
and we’re all doing well, and we owe that to
the focus, attention and love that my parents
poured into our family. Also, I was around a lot
of charismatic and effective leaders in high school
and college. I learned that leading by example,
showing people what you expect, doing the tough
job yourself and taking care of those who do the
same—that pays off time and again.
QIs there anything else you’d like Edison
International employees to know about you?
I’m proud of what we do, and of what the San
Onofre Nuclear Generating Station has accomplished.
A number of people have told me that the
challenges at San Onofre have become front and
center in the company. I recognize the impact that
dealing with these issues has had on people, and I
want to thank folks for their professionalism and
their focus on it. I appreciate all the support, and
I’m proud to be your representative talking about
how we will approach things safely.
