<strong>Education</strong> Distribution Program Makes a World of Difference It is a fact that people in developing countries represent 90 percent of the world’s blind population and are 10 times more likely to go blind than those in developed countries. “Greetings from Iloilo City, Philippines! International Assistance The Foundation’s International Assistance program helps improve eye care in developing nations by enhancing the education and training of ophthalmologists in those regions. To date, the Foundation has provided over 700 training institutions with free ophthalmic educational materials and has hosted hundreds of ophthalmologists at the Academy’s Annual Meeting where they benefit from instruction and skills transfer courses. Last year, the Foundation provided 266 ophthalmology training programs and 77 residents with free ophthalmic educational materials, hosted 37 guest ophthalmologists during the Academy’s Annual Meeting, and linked 383 eye care professionals to volunteer sites in developing countries. EDUCATION DISTRIBUTION International Assistance provides muchneeded educational materials to ophthalmology training programs in low-income nations with the least resources. In addition, text books are provided to ophthalmology residents in selected programs. HOST PROGRAMS The Rotary Club Host Project sponsors ophthalmologists from developing nations to come to the United States for a twoweek professional, educational, social and cultural immersion, beginning with the first week in the hosting Rotary Club’s community and concluding with the second week at the Academy’s Annual Meeting. Nine international ophthalmologists participated in this program in 2003. VOLUNTEER REGISTRY Designed to connect ophthalmic professionals interested in volunteering their skills in a developing nation with organizations and institutions that need assistance, the International Volunteer Registry provided more than 383 individuals with information on volunteer sites with 131 organizations and institutions. “I want to express my great gratitude to you for the donated excellent education material.
