Senior Ophthalmologist Advocates for Continuing Education “During the past two decades the urgent need for organized ophthalmology to support the advocacy of medical eye care on the state and federal levels has used funds that might otherwise have been earmarked for continuing education, which for years has been the primary mission of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Advocacy has become a personal obligation of every ophthalmologist concerned about the socioeconomic and political realities that face us. To ensure that ophthalmologists can continue to provide patients access to the highest quality of eye care, the Academy has sought a method to better fulfill its educational mission. The Academy Education Fund is intended to raise philanthropic support in order to advance ophthalmic education. The AAO must remain the most trusted, credible, relevant, and price-competitive source of ophthalmic knowledge for its members. Our generation of senior ophthalmologists must help ensure that the present and the future generations of Eye M.D.’s will continue to represent the excellence for which the finest specialty in medicine is well known.” David W. Parke, MD THE ACADEMY EDUCATION FUND Knowledge of medical advances is a crucial component in providing patients with quality eye care. The Academy Education Fund supports research and development that expedites the transfer of critical ophthalmic knowledge and development of easy-to-use, educational -David W. Parke, MD products and services for ophthalmologists. Through this support, eye care doctors and professionals worldwide can obtain the educational resources necessary to improve eye care. Nearly $900,000 was contributed to ophthalmic education in fiscal year 2004.
The Museum of Vision Preserves A Doctor’s Special Journey 1946 refugee identification papers of Rudolf H. Bock, MD Dr. Rudolf H. Bock was studying medicine in 1938 when Hitler invaded Austria. At that time, he was forced by the Nazis to flee his country. Dr. Bock traveled to China in order to escape Nazi persecution and complete his studies. He received his degree in June 1941. In 2003, the Academy Foundation’s Museum of Vision created an archive of Dr. Bock’s personal history. The archive includes manuscripts entitled: “An Ophthalmologist Sees the World,” “An Ophthalmologist in Botswana,” and “Gratefully Looking Back: A Doctor’s Special Journey.” These manuscripts, coupled with Dr. Bock’s personal papers, diplomas, photographs and diary, document a truly fascinating account of Dr. Bock’s years in medical school during World War II and his subsequent travels to Botswana, Afghanistan, Bali and Israel. “What a wonderful offer you have made me in considering to keep my stories in your archives. All I wanted was that as many of my colleagues as possible could enjoy them because they are about a very different aspect of our beloved specialty.” -Rudolf H. Bock, MD OPHTHALMIC HERITAGE & MUSEUM OF VISION Ophthalmology and the Academy have played important roles in the history of medicine. The Foundation’s Museum of Vision preserves this history and translates it into an educational resource for use by Academy members, medical historians, researchers and the public as they seek to understand ophthalmology’s contributions to society and address similar challenges today and in the future. Last year, the Museum of Vision reached more than 150,000 people through its activities. COLLECTION Each year the museum acquires many items for its collection, including artifacts, archival materials and rare books. A personal history often accompanies each donation to the museum, making for not only an interesting collection, but also one with a rich and varied background. HISTORY RESOURCE SERVICES The museum’s history resource services assist with a wide range of historical research requests. Each year Academy members, non-ophthalmologist physicians, teachers, parents, children, and members of the general public take advantage of the Museum of Vision’s educational resources by directing specific inquiries to staff, conducting on-site historical research, and accessing photos. EXHIBITS More than 47,000 people toured the award-winning Animal Eyes exhibit in one of three, two-month runs in venues across the country. The 2,000-square-foot exhibit is in its final year of touring, thanks to a grant from ALCON for refurbishment and to the Association of Science- Technology Centers, who manages the tour. EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES The museum introduced nearly 64,000 people to the world of vision through its educational resources available to physicians, teachers, parents, and other museums interested in teaching people of all ages about the eye, vision, and the history of eye care.
