Dear Friends
It’s always rewarding to look back on a successful year and reflect on
a job well done. Our dedicated committee members and volunteers
have once again delivered on our promise to support the Academy in
its efforts to advance ophthalmic education and provide the best possible
eye care for the public. Because of our work, 266 educational
and training programs in developing countries received free ophthalmic
educational materials, and more than 150,000 children and
their families participated in educational activities designed by the
Museum of Vision. Last year, the Foundation helped more than
32,000 people through its award-winning public service program,
EyeCare America.
In large part, we owe our success to individuals that make up two
very special groups: the donors who have contributed more than
$2.9 million in support of our cause over the last twelve months and
the outstanding volunteer ophthalmologists committed to serving
their communities and their profession.
As this new year begins, we are excited at the prospect of continuing
to advance ophthalmic education and connecting more people with
the eye care and education they need. With your support our work
will be used to help ophthalmologists gain the continuing education
they need to help their patients and provide an invaluable public
service to our communities.
Senior Ophthalmologist Advocates for
Continuing Education
“During the past two decades the urgent need for organized
ophthalmology to support the advocacy of medical
eye care on the state and federal levels has used funds
that might otherwise have been earmarked for continuing
education, which for years has been the primary mission
of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Advocacy has become a
personal obligation of every ophthalmologist concerned about the socioeconomic
and political realities that face us.
To ensure that ophthalmologists can continue to provide patients
access to the highest quality of eye care, the Academy has sought a
method to better fulfill its educational mission. The Academy Education
Fund is intended to raise philanthropic support in order to advance ophthalmic
education.
The AAO must remain the most trusted, credible, relevant, and
price-competitive source of ophthalmic knowledge for its members. Our
generation of senior ophthalmologists must help ensure that the present
and the future generations of Eye M.D.’s will continue to represent the
excellence for which the finest specialty in medicine is well known.”
David W. Parke, MD
THE ACADEMY EDUCATION FUND
Knowledge of medical advances is a crucial
component in providing patients with
quality eye care.
The Academy Education Fund supports
research and development that expedites the
transfer of critical ophthalmic knowledge
and development of easy-to-use, educational
products and services for ophthalmologists.
Through this support, eye care doctors
and professionals worldwide can obtain
the educational resources necessary to
improve eye care.
Nearly $900,000 was contributed to
ophthalmic education in fiscal year 2004.
The Museum of Vision Preserves
A Doctor’s Special Journey
1946 refugee identification papers of
Rudolf H. Bock, MD
Dr. Rudolf H. Bock was studying medicine
in 1938 when Hitler invaded Austria.
At that time, he was forced by the Nazis
to flee his country. Dr. Bock traveled to
China in order to escape Nazi persecution
and complete his studies. He received his
degree in June 1941.
In 2003, the Academy Foundation’s
Museum of Vision created an archive of
Dr. Bock’s personal history. The archive
includes manuscripts entitled: “An
Ophthalmologist Sees the World,” “An
Ophthalmologist in Botswana,” and
“Gratefully Looking Back: A Doctor’s
Special Journey.” These manuscripts, coupled
with Dr. Bock’s personal papers,
diplomas, photographs and diary, document
a truly fascinating account of Dr.
Bock’s years in medical school during
World War II and his subsequent travels
to Botswana, Afghanistan, Bali and Israel.
“What a wonderful offer you
have made me in considering to
keep my stories in your archives.
All I wanted was that as many of
my colleagues as possible could
enjoy them because they are about
a very different aspect of our
beloved specialty.”
-Rudolf H. Bock, MD
OPHTHALMIC HERITAGE
& MUSEUM OF VISION
Ophthalmology and the Academy have
played important roles in the history of
medicine. The Foundation’s Museum of
Vision preserves this history and translates
it into an educational resource for use by
Academy members, medical historians,
researchers and the public as they seek to
understand ophthalmology’s contributions
to society and address similar challenges
today and in the future.
Last year, the Museum of Vision
reached more than 150,000 people
through its activities.
COLLECTION
Each year the museum acquires many
items for its collection, including artifacts,
archival materials and rare books. A personal
history often accompanies each
donation to the museum, making for not
only an interesting collection, but also one
with a rich and varied background.
HISTORY RESOURCE SERVICES
The museum’s history resource services
assist with a wide range of historical
research requests. Each year Academy
members, non-ophthalmologist physicians,
teachers, parents, children, and
members of the general public take advantage
of the Museum of Vision’s educational
resources by directing specific inquiries
to staff, conducting on-site historical
research, and accessing photos.
EXHIBITS
More than 47,000 people toured the
award-winning Animal Eyes exhibit in
one of three, two-month runs in venues
across the country. The 2,000-square-foot
exhibit is in its final year of touring, thanks
to a grant from ALCON for refurbishment
and to the Association of Science-
Technology Centers, who manages the tour.
EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
The museum introduced nearly 64,000 people
to the world of vision through its educational
resources available to physicians,
teachers, parents, and other museums interested
in teaching people of all ages about
the eye, vision, and the history of eye care.
Education Distribution Program Makes
a World of Difference
It is a fact that people in developing countries represent 90 percent of the
world’s blind population and are 10 times more likely to go blind than
those in developed countries.
“Greetings from Iloilo City, Philippines! We are overwhelmed and extremely
grateful that you have chosen the Ophthalmology Dept. of the Western
Visayas Medical Center as one of the recipients of your educational materials
assistance program. We would like to acknowledge the receipt of a
whole set of the AAO Basic and Clinical Science Course (vol. 1-13 and
master index) and volumes 1, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 12 of the Ophthalmology
Monograms.
I cannot begin to describe the impact this has on the morale of our staff
including yours truly and in particular that of our senior resident who will
be taking the written exams of the Ophthalmology Board this July.
May your organization be richly blessed as it continues to spread its blessings
to eye care programs worldwide. Together we can truly light up our
world!”
Very truly yours,
International Assistance
The Foundation’s International Assistance program helps improve eye care
in developing nations by enhancing the education and training of ophthalmologists
in those regions. To date, the Foundation has provided over 700
training institutions with free ophthalmic educational materials and has
hosted hundreds of ophthalmologists at the Academy’s Annual Meeting
where they benefit from instruction and skills transfer courses.
Last year, the Foundation provided 266 ophthalmology training programs
and 77 residents with free ophthalmic educational materials, hosted
37 guest ophthalmologists during the Academy’s Annual Meeting, and linked
383 eye care professionals to volunteer sites in developing countries.
EDUCATION DISTRIBUTION
Senior Saves Vision Through
EyeCare America Program
Sarah Polsfuss stuffed her notes and the article about EyeCare
America into a drawer, where it stayed for over a year. But then one
day, her eyesight failed her to the point she’d had enough. She was
frustrated with not being able to see well enough to read, take her
daily walks or gauge how much salt and pepper she was pouring into
her cooking. She dug out the story about the organization and called.
Today, she has better vision than she thinks she’s ever had.
“I thought it sounded too good to be true,” Polsfuss said. That’s
why she didn’t act when she first read about EyeCare America and
their services for senior citizens.
Polsfuss, 67, was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes 13 years
ago. She didn’t have the money or insurance for the surgery she needed
and eventually went blind in her right eye.
She said she doesn’t like to ask for help, but this time she knew it
was worth asking. Within a couple of weeks of her phone call, she
found out she qualified and the paperwork was done. EyeCare
America referred her to one of the organization’s 7,500 volunteer
ophthalmologists. Sarah had surgery to remove her cataracts, saving
her from complete blindness; all without having to pay any out-ofpocket
costs. In all, she had one year of free medical eye care.
“I can see so good now that I have to pinch myself to know it’s
true. I wish my family had warned me about all my wrinkles
though,” she said with a laugh.
EyeCare America
EyeCare America provides access to eye care for the medically underserved
and for those at increased risk for eye disease through its corps of 7,500
volunteer ophthalmologists dedicated to serving their communities. More
than 90 percent of the care made available through EyeCare America is
provided with no out-of-pocket cost to the patients. EyeCare America runs
programs for seniors, glaucoma, diabetes and children, and is one of the
largest programs of its kind in American medicine. Since 1985, EyeCare
America has helped more than 700,000 people and treated more than
183,000 cases of eye disease.
Last year, EyeCare America provided services to 32,140 people.
SENIORS EYECARE PROGRAM
Provides educational materials on eye
health and provides seniors with ophthalmic
care at no out-of-pocket cost.
GLAUCOMA EYECARE PROGRAM
Encourages early detection and treatment
of glaucoma by promoting awareness of
glaucoma risk factors and providing glaucoma
eye exams to qualified individuals
who are at increased risk.
CHILDREN’S EYECARE PROGRAM
Educates parents and primary care physicians
about the importance of early childhood
eye screenings and treatment.
Visionary Society and Fundraising Volunteers
Since its founding in 1980, the Academy
Foundation has received contributions
from thousands of members, individuals,
corporations and foundations. This
broad-based support whether in terms of
time, expertise or financial has played an
important role in allowing the Academy
and Foundation to achieve their missions.
Included among these many dedicated
contributors are a small, but growing,
number of supporters who have truly distinguished
themselves through their commitment
to education, excellence in
patient care and philanthropy. We are
fortunate to have six such members of the
ophthalmic community, who have distinguished
themselves in all three areas. As a
means of formally recognizing their
extraordinary commitment, the
Foundation has created “The Visionary
Society.”
Membership in The Visionary Society is open to any
Academy member, individual, corporation or foundation
that contributes a total of $1,000,000 or more
for any purpose to the Foundation. Those donors
who make gifts of $1,000,000 or more within one fiscal
year are designated as “Gold Members.”
Honor Roll of Donors
The generous support of our many individual, corporate, and institutional
donors makes possible the Foundation’s significant accomplishments.
In the past fiscal year we raised more than $2.9 million
toward our programs and activities.
The Honor Roll that follows acknowledges contributions made
between April 1, 2003 and March 31, 2004. We extend our sincerest
gratitude for every act of generosity represented on the pages that follow.
We have made every effort to provide a complete and accurate listing of donors and gifts. Please accept
our sincere apologies if we have made a mistake or omission. Should you notice incorrect information,
please contact us and we will gladly correct our records.
LEADERSHIP COUNCIL
The Foundation’s Leadership Council is
composed of individuals from around the
world who support the mission and work
of Foundation by contributing $2,500 or
more annually to its programs. Through
their contributions and advocacy, the
Leadership Council motivates others who
have been affected by blindness or severe
visual impairment to support the
Foundation’s mission.
PARTNERS FOR SIGHT
Partners for Sight are individuals who
believe in the mission of Foundation and
have demonstrated their support with a
gift of $1,000 to $2,499 in a single fiscal
year. Through their generosity, these individuals
help sustain and grow the educational
and public service programs of the
Foundation.
Generous Gift From Patient Who
Almost Lost His Sight
John R. Paddock, PhD
“I encourage patients who have
received sight-saving treatment
to support the Academy Foundation
through a tribute gift so that
others may receive the same
quality care I was fortunate
enough to receive.”
Last year the Foundation was touched by
a generous gift received from Dr. John
Paddock, a psychologist who underwent
surgery to save his sight.
Dr. Paddock was profoundly nearsighted.
He was born myopic and amblyopic,
making him legally blind in his right eye
while his left eye provided him with only
fuzzy perception. When he was drafted in
1971, the doctor that examined his eyes
pronounced, “Son, we do NOT want you
shooting on OUR side!”
Dr. Paddock was unaware that his condition
was a risk factor for cataract development.
The surgery that removed the
cataracts from both of his eyes and corrected
his sight in March of 2002 left him with
20/15 vision. Dr. Paddock’s life has
changed so dramatically due to the care of
his ophthalmologist, he wanted others to
experience the same life alteration that was
provided to him by his surgery.
On November 8th of 2003, Dr.
Paddock celebrated his 50th birthday and
requested that his guests donate money to
the Foundation in lieu of giving him gifts.
In total, his friends and family donated a
large four-figure sum of money to the
Foundation’s programs. In January 2004,
the Foundation received an additional fivefigure
amount from Dr. Paddock and his
wife in further support of our programming.
While the care that Dr. Paddock
received from his ophthalmologist made
him a grateful patient, his kind heart and
generosity have made us grateful, as well.
His gift has had a profound impact on
the Foundation’s programs and has
touched the lives of many both in the U.S.
and abroad.
Legacy Society & Tribute Gifts
“When Claire and I were deciding where to direct our philanthropic support,
we agreed that providing for ophthalmic education and public service was
most closely aligned with our lifetime of work. To that end, Claire and I
chose to establish a $100,000 charitable remainder unitrust for the Academy
Foundation because it best reflected our gratitude and commitment to the
field of ophthalmology.”
2003/2004 Award Recipients
Each year the Foundation honors both individuals and organizations
that have provided extraordinary support for our mission. Below is a
list of the 2003/2004 award recipients.
COMMITMENT TO SIGHT AWARD
The Foundation’s Commitment to Sight
Award has been established in order to
honor those who have made an ongoing
commitment to the Foundation’s mission.
The award is a tribute to individuals or
organizations that have demonstrated
dedicated efforts and advocacy for
improving eye care for those at greatest
risk of eye disease.
BARBARA B. FLEMING, MD, PHD
Barbara B. Fleming, MD, PhD, senior clinical advisor,
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services
(CMS), was the first recipient of the Foundation’s
Commitment to Sight award for her outstanding
personal commitment toward the preservation of
sight.
ACADEMY FOUNDATION
AWARD RECIPIENTS
GEORGE E. GARCIA, MD
Dr. Garcia provided for a gift through his estate to
the Foundation. In doing so, Dr. Garcia became a
charter member of The Legacy Society. The Legacy
Society is composed of extraordinary individuals
who support the educational work of the Academy
or the mission of the Foundation by including either
of them in a planned gift, such as a will or a trust.
ERNEST HERMAN
Mr. Herman supported Resident Education by contributing
a most generous gift of $100,000. This gift
exemplifies Mr. Herman’s genuine commitment to
improving eye care for the patients we serve.
THE INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE MISSION
The Foundation and its Advisory Board recognized
The International Assistance Mission for their
tremendous work in the eye care field. This organization
has been the primary provider of medical
and surgical eye care in Afghanistan for 37 years.
ALCON
For years ALCON has been supportive of the
Foundation through a variety of sponsorships providing
support for the Academy’s Ethics program,
the Veterans of Foreign Wars Screening program,
the National Medical Association Eye Screening
program and the “Phacoemulsification-35 Years
Later” symposium during its 2003 Annual Meeting.
In addition, ALCON is a member of the Foundation’s
Corporate Advisory Council at the Benefactor level.
ALLERGAN, INC.
Allergan provides support for clinical education with
a two-year, $150,000 grant for the Academy’s online
Education Resource Center and for its support of
the Young Ophthalmologists half-day program, the
Joint Meeting and a variety of other Academy educational
products. The Allergan Foundation recently
awarded a $7,500 grant for public service to the
Foundation. Allergan also has been a Benefactor of
the Foundation’s Corporate Advisory Council.
KNIGHTS TEMPLAR EYE FOUNDATION, INC.
The Knights Templar Eye Foundation has been a
long-standing partner in supporting EyeCare
America’s national public service programs and has
contributed $2 million to its programs. Their contributions
to the Seniors EyeCare Program have
enabled us to serve hundreds of thousands of people
and reach millions more each year with our
messages about eye health and blindness prevention.
We could not have achieved so much without
the continued support and involvement of the
Knights.
PFIZER OPHTHALMICS
Pfizer Ophthalmics has been a valued contributor to
Foundation programs for many years. They are a
current sponsor of EyeCare America’s Glaucoma
EyeCare Program, providing an annual commitment
of $500,000 over the last three years. We are grateful
to Pfizer for renewing their commitment with
another three-year grant of $1.5 million. Pfizer
Ophthalmics also renewed its support of the
Academy’s Young Ophthalmologists program and is
also a Benefactor member of the Foundation’s
Corporate Advisory Council.
RETINA RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The Retina Research Foundation has provided over
$1 million to the Foundation throughout the years.
Last year, the organization provided us with a gift of
$100,000 toward ophthalmic education.
