ST. BALDRICK’S
DAY
For the Irish, St. Patrick’s Day
is a time to celebrate heritage,
culture and tradition, but for the St.
Baldrick’s Foundation it represents
the day a unique tradition was
born. On March 17, 2000, the
St. Baldrick’s Foundation (a
nonprofit organization) held its
first head-shaving event for childhood
cancer research. St. Baldricks is dedicated to raising money for
childhood cancer research, and has become known for its signature head-shaving
events where volunteers collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with
children with cancer who typically lose their hair during treatment. In recognition
of the 16,000 children who are diagnosed with cancer worldwide, every year
Hersey students joined with thousands of volunteers across the country to help
raise funds for this cause.

Principal’s Message...
Well, spring has officially come to Chicagoland, and most of us are excited for a
change from winter. We are ready for warmer weather and some fun in the sun.
A time of transitions renews us and energizes us. So it is for our students and
our educational system.
Our seniors are well into their eighth semester of work and are eagerly looking
forward to transitioning into their futures. Whether that means continuing
education or immediate entry to the workforce, we are excited for their
opportunities and we wish them well. I am sure that they will stay strong and
finish with a flourish. It is truly their time to celebrate this significant level of
success. A high school diploma is crucial in a global economy and workforce.
On the other end of the spectrum, we have a group of eighth graders anxiously anticipating their transition to our high
school. We look forward to working with these new students and their parents in our combined efforts to begin an
exciting educational experience reaching beyond the classroom into all sorts of possible clubs and activities. If they
only knew how soon this time would pass, we are confident that they would reach out and become highly involved
in their time at Hersey. It is always encouraging to see the amazing growth, both academic and personal, that takes
place for our students. This group has a chance to reach and explore more than any other before them.
The rest of our students are also moving ahead with their academics and activities. They are excited to almost be
done with their current status and to pass forward into the next class year. It is exciting to see them take advantage of
all that our school system offers. Athletics, fine arts, academics, clubs, and school sponsored social events consume
their time. We look forward to our continued efforts as we wrap up this spring semester.
The transitions for our school system are equally exciting. We are exploring utilization of one-on-one computer
tablets for our students. We hope to be able to place one in each of our junior class student’s possession next year.
We are seeing positive educational growth from our pilot programs, and we are confident that we can transition
those learned concepts to a larger audience. Additionally, our Career Technology department is also working on
creating exciting, new curriculum, searching for relevancy and purpose for our students in this quickly changing
landscape. Our educational forums are also stretching and reaching, gathering more cohesiveness than ever between
departments. Our work with interventions for students that struggle to learn are also growing and affecting more
students in more ways than ever. For the first time, we will be offering a Native Speakers Spanish course for next
year. Our commitment to our students reaches to each and every one of them as we strive for effective relevancy in
those efforts.
So it is with excited optimism that I present this newsletter to you. Inside you will read about accomplishments,
information, and opportunities for our student body. Please take a minute to read and to learn about those items. I
am hopeful that you will also find renewal and energy through the experience. There is much to celebrate at John
Hersey this spring.

JHHS 2013 Summer Athletic Camps
Summer Athletic Camps for 2013 will soon be here. We are excited to offer camps to
elementary, junior high, and high school students again this summer. Many different sports are
represented; some exclusively for boys or girls, and some co-ed. All of these camps are coached
by Hersey staff coaches or professionals in their given field of sport. We hope you take
advantage of this opportunity and get a head start on your season, whatever your sport may be!!
Information can be found on the Hersey webpage at jhhs.d214.org. Click on the “Summer
Camps” button on the left side of the page. Online registration will be available starting April
1 st . If you are going to pay by cash or check, or if you are on a fee waiver, you must register in
person at the school between 7:30am-3:00pm on a regular school day.
When registering your student, please select sessions according to their grade in September,
2013.
We are very sorry, but we cannot offer discounts for multiple camps or family registrations.
We are also unable to prorate fees for days that are missed.
Session I will run from June 10 th to July 3 rd (no camps on Thursday, July
4 th ). Session II will run from July 8 th to August 1 st .

Hersey Salutes Our
Distinguished Service Award Winner
Dr. Richard Tuttle
Since 2002, Dr. Richard Tuttle has served as John Hersey High School’s team physician
providing athletes and coaches with expert medical care. His unselfish commitment to the
Hersey community is seen in countless ways. He always makes his services available to the
school by standing on the sidelines at footbal l games, allowing staff to schedule last minute
office visits for athletes, being available for phone consultations, and providing medical
advice on athletes’ care for the creation of district policies and procedures. He was a great
resource when the District 214 Head Injury Guidelines were being developed. Dr. Tuttle
has provided all these services and more, while refusing to be compensated for his time and
expertise. When asked about compensation, he stated that he felt strongly about giving back
to the community in some way, especially when it involves youth.
Dr. Richard Tuttle epitomizes what this award stands for—Distinguished Service—and
the John Hersey High School family is proud to present him with the 2013 Distinguished
Service Award.

ORCHESIS
On Saturday February 23, 2013 Hersey Orchesis auditioned two
student choreographed pieces at Buffalo Grove High School.
Approximately 40 student choreographed pieces were auditioned
throughout the day. 9-12 pieces are selected in the entire state to
be performed in the Illinois State Dance Festival held in May each
year. I am honored and proud to announce that for the second year
in a row, Hersey Orchesis will be performing once again at the
Illinois State Dance Festival!!
The piece that was selected is titled
“Passenger Seat.”

HERSEY’S COFFEE HOUSE FUN!
On Tuesday, March 19, John Hersey High School
celebrated more than a decade of its annual Coffee House, an event rich in artistic
talent from students who participate during lunch hours in the Black Box. In the past,
students have shared with other students a variety of fine and performing art performances
such as singing, poetry recitation, and instrumental playing. Sponsor Lara Becker states,
“The Black Box is turned into a groovy atmosphere and coffee and treats are served.”
The event is made possible in great part by District 214 Arts Unlimited funding.

Illinois Principal’s Association
In March, Lauren Nagle was honored
by the Illinois Principals’ Association
at the third annual student recognition
breakfast. Lauren received this honor
due to her ability to demonstrate
responsibility, commitment to school,
and leadership. Congratulations, Lauren.
HERSEY’S ROBOTS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE
IN BATTLEBOTS COMPETITION
Robot Rumble competition in it’s 4th year, which was held at Wheeling High School. A
total of 30 robots compeated, increasing every year. Hersey competed and did an excellent
job and performed with six robots. Congratulations to these well deserving students.

Congratulations to the Hersey Science
Olympiad team for taking the overall 2nd place
trophy at this years Regional Competition.
This qualifies the team for the State Tournament
to be held at University of Illinois on April 20th.

Hersey proudly recognizes the contributions
of two members of the Varsity Scholastic Bowl
Team: Steve Landeweer and Phil Tubergen.
Each was selected as an “MSL All-Star” for
demonstrating extensive knowledge of topics
ranging from history and geography to
chemistry and biology. Together, they propelled
their team to a 23 - 9 record and an MSL East
Division title. Congratulations to Steve and

Microsoft Technology Associate
Network fundamentals exam that was taken
at Harper College. This exam was provided
for free to students who took the first
semester Network Essentials class (our Cisco
Networking Basics). We will be preparing
for the CompTIA exams in May. Please
congratulate them. A total of 12 students from
the District passed the exams.
MVA-Most Valuable Attitude

Shaniah Duff was recognized as an election
judge by doing an excellent job on election day.
She was well prepared by studying the Election
Manual and was a great help to her fellow
judges.
Kaitlyn Roscoe was commended for her
kindness to some special education students
who went to the circus and had some concerns.
Kaitlyn reassured them and helped them to
have an enjoyable day.
Polar Plunge - MVA
Congratulations to the following girls who
raised over $2,000 for Special Olympics by
participating in the “Polar Plunge” in March
at Twin Lakes in Palatine. These water polo
athletes were “Freezin’ for a Reason!”

Gallia Kastner
Gallia Kastner recently won the annual Blount-
Slawson solo competition sponsored by the
Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. This
prestigious solo competition featured 77 young
artist from the U.S., including musicians already
attending music conservatories such as Julliard
and the Curtis Institute of Music.
Choral Department
Hersey’s OnStage group won First Runner-up
at both Milton Showchoir Competition in WI
and Chesterton Trojan Classic in IN.
Ladies First placed First Runner-up at
Milton and were named Grand Champion at
Chesterton. Hersey also won Outstanding
Vocal Achievement in their division at
Chesterton.
Jenna Borrelli was named solo champion at the
Milton Showchoir Competition.
Mike Perlongo was recognized as Male Solo
Champion and Madeleine Brown was selected
Female Solo Champion.

a sanctioned sport. Hersey would like to
recognize John Cappuccitti for being chosen
to the 2013 All State Hockey team. The
hockey team is currently ranked in the top 10
in the State. Congratulations to all.
Boys’ Basketball
Congratulations to seniors Michael Fuerst
who was named MSL All Conference and All
Area. Michael was a junior captain, second
leading scorer and rebounder. Michael was
named to the MSL All Conference team and
took more charges (38) in one season than
anyone in the history of Hersey basketball.
Three Point Contest
Congratulations to Michael Sauer for
winning the Three Point Contest in basketball
at the Sectionals and off to the State contest.
Competitive Cheerleading
The cheerleading team competed this year
and placed 5th in MSL Conference and 8th in
IHSA Sectionals.

DECA BUSINESS CLUB TO STATE COMPETITION
Hersey High School’s DECA Business Club
participated at the DECA Regional Competition and
had great success. Recently, the students participated
in State Competition. Hersey High School is
very proud to congratulate its second-ever State
Champions: Carolyn Niersbach and Amanda Mix
who won the Hospitality Services event. Carolyn and
Amanda will represent Hersey at the International
Career Development Conference in Anaheim, CA in
late April. Congratulations to Carolyn, Amanda, and
the rest of the Hersey DECA Business students!

Dear Parent/Guardian and Staff Members:
In 1999 the Illinois General Assembly passed laws requiring that public schools notify
parents/guardians and school employees at least 48 hours prior to any pesticide applications on
school property. The term “pesticide” includes insecticides, herbicides, rodenticides, and
fungicides. The notification requirement extends to both indoor and outdoor pesticide
applications. Excluded from the notification requirement are antimicrobial agents (such as
disinfectants, sanitizers, or deodorizers), insecticide baits, and rodenticide baits.
John Hersey High School has therefore established a registry of people who wish to be notified.
To be included in this registry, please complete the form below and submit it to the Buildings
and Grounds Supervisor at your school. Any other questions you may have regarding the
