Automotive R&D
Oakland County’s
Automotive Research &
Development Advantage
Oakland County companies can leverage the region’s
position as the global capital of vehicle research and
development with tens of thousands of engineers and
scientists working toward new solutions. Oakland County
companies know what it takes to develop new, innovative
technologies, because automotive manufacturing was born
here. That is why the world’s most innovative corporations,
including every major vehicle-related manufacturer and
supplier, have facilities in the region.
More than one third of those R&D facilities are located
in Oakland County. Companies such as Robert Bosch,
Chrysler Group, Continental, Denso, Fanuc Robotics,
Faurecia, Hitachi Automotive, Magna International,
Siemens, Tata Technologies, Valeo and ZF Friedrichshafen
AG have facilities in the county.
The largest facility in Oakland County is Chrysler Group’s
Technology Center and World Headquarters in Auburn
Hills. The 504-acre facility is the only automotive complex
that brings together cutting-edge scientific research,
industry-leading creative design, vehicle development,
engineering, manufacturing, marketing and corporate
leadership all under one roof.
The Auburn Hills facility is also the global engineering
electrification center for all Chrysler and Fiat vehicles.
The center houses vehicle product teams, eight design
studios, pilot plant and scientific laboratories. The labs
include an aero-acoustic wind tunnel; emissions lab;
powertrain test center; noise, vibration and harshness lab;
and electromagnetic compatibility facility, in addition to a
1.8-mile test track.
Companies located in Oakland County have a strategic
advantage in capitalizing on the growing automotive
research and development field. Just look at the following
features:
• Michigan is the No. 1 state for vehicle-related R&D,
spending $11.8 billion annually
• The federal government allotted $2.4 billion for advanced
battery and electric vehicle projects across the country,
more than half going to Michigan companies
• State officials’ say battery projects will create almost 7,000
jobs in the next 18 months and 40,000 by 2020
• The state is ranked fourth in the nation in research
intensity (ratio of expenditures to gross state product)
• Michigan has the fourth highest number of engineers
nationally
• The state is home to 47 of the top 50 global automotive
suppliers
• Twenty three percent of total U.S. vehicle production
• Oakland County has over 1,700 businesses and 107,000
workers that are directly or indirectly involved with
automotive manufacturing
