Clear Lake Shores Civic Club Newsletter
April 2011
March has already blown by, wow it will be summer before you know it. There were lots of
things going on this past month. As most of you know the soup cook off got rescheduled to
January, that’s a good month for soup. So keep an eye out for the new date for that and be thinking of a
good recipe for the contest.
The golf cart Mardi Gras parade was a lot of fun, we had good turnout of carts and lots of fun. I believe
we had over 20 carts in the parade and they were all decorated great. Lots of beads were thrown and we
even had off island visitors come for the parade. A local senior citizens home brought about 25 folks
over to see the parade, and they really seemed to enjoy it. They all got plenty of beads. I have asked for a
committee to make next years Mardi Gras even better, so be looking for more news on that. Folks on the
committee be looking for an e-mail in the next couple of weeks so we get working on next years
festivities.
April is here and its Easter time, as all ways we will be having the traditional sunrise service on Easter
Sunday at Deep Hole Park. I went last year and it was a very nice service. We are still looking for
volunteers to help carry chairs to Deep Hole that morning and set them up then carry them back to the
Clubhouse. Just contact me and let me know if you would like to help.
Once again Ryan Ward is going to do the Children’s Easter Party at the Clubhouse on April 23rd.
So if you have some little ones you want to bring them to that. I hear the Easter Bunny will be making an
appearance, so come out and have a great time.
Also in April is Candidate’s Night on April 14th; this will be held at the Clubhouse. So come and hear
what the candidates have to say. You can also ask questions of each candidate so come and take part in
the election process on the island.
I want to wish everyone on the Island a Happy Easter. This is a great place to celebrate Easter; the
island is in bloom so enjoy.
Finally, I want to say thank you to all the volunteers that helped in putting Lowell Brown’s birthday
party together, there were so many that pitched in and helped. Glenn Dowell and Allen Batchelor
cooked all the meats that were donated. A big thank you to all the folks who donated for the event. There
are way to many to name. I was personally blown away by the amount of food that the island brought for
this event we ran out of tables to put it on. I know Lowell truly enjoyed seeing everyone that came out
and helped him celebrate his birthday. Please go by and see the plaque that has been installed in Sundial
Park, which on March 1, 2011 was renamed the Lowell Brown Sundial Park. See page 6 for more
information. Lowell who gave many years of service in both the civic arena and as the “Official Golf
Cart Mechanic of Clear Lake Shores” passed away at his home on Monday, March 28. Please remember
Helle and his family in your thoughts and prayers.
Clear Shores Civic Club meeting will be Thursday April 7. The covered dish will be at 7:00 pm and
the meeting starts at 7:30. Come out and help us plan all the events that are coming up this summer.

It’s A Man’s World
By William Speer
Here are a few computer tips that, if you don’t know
them already, can make your computer life more
enjoyable. You can then impress your family, friends or
co-workers with your extensive computer knowledge.
* When you get an e-mail message from eBay or your
bank, claiming that you have an account problem, it’s
probably a “phishing scam” intended to trick you into
typing your password. Don’t click the link in the
message. If in doubt, go into your browser and type the
domain name manually (eg., www.ebay.com).
* Nobody, but nobody, is going to give you half of $80
million to help them liberate the funds of a deceased
millionaire…from Nigeria or anywhere else.
* You can hide all windows, revealing only what’s on
the computer desktop, with one keystroke: hit the
Windows key and “D” simultaneously. Press the
keystroke again to return to what you were doing.
* You can enlarge the text on any Web page. In
Windows, press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys.
* You can also enlarge the entire Web page or
document by pressing the Control key as you turn the
wheel on top of your mouse..
* You can tap the Space bar to scroll down on a Web
page one screen length. Add the Shift key to scroll up.
* When you’re filling in the boxes on a Web page (like
City, State, Zip), you can press the Tab key to jump from
box to box, rather than clicking. Add the Shift key to
jump through the boxes backwards.
* You can open the Start menu by tapping the key with
the Windows logo on it.
* You can switch from one open program to the next by
pressing Alt+Tab (Windows) or Command-Tab (Mac).
* You don’t have to type “http://www” into your Web
browser. Just type the remainder, like: “google.com”
* You can use Google to do math for you. Just type the
equation, like 265*5+14/3=, and hit Enter. * means
“times” and / means “divided by.”
* Google is also a units-of-measurement and currency
converter. Type “teaspoons in 1.3 gallons,” for example,
or “Euros in 17 dollars.” Click Search to see the answer.
* When you’re searching for something on the Web
using, say, Google, put quotes around phrases that must
be searched together. For example, if you put quotes
around “electric guitar,” Google won’t waste your time
finding one set of Web pages containing the word
“electric” and another set containing the word “guitar.”
You can remove search terms so that Google ignores
pages with the words specified. So if you're looking for
information about the electric guitar, but not bass guitar,
you can search for electric guitar -bass and all the
websites with bass guitars won’t be shown.
Lowell Brown Sundial Park
by Suzanne Hubbard
At the March 1st Council meeting, Mayor Vern
Johnson and Councilmember Tami Perkins presented
the resolution to rename Sundial Park after Lowell
Brown, a long time resident of Clear Lake Shores.
The unanimous vote was followed by applause which
grew to a standing ovation. Paul Shelley announced a
rectangular granite stone with a plaque honoring Lowell
has been ordered. It will be placed on the waterfront side
of the park. The official ribbon cutting and dedication
date has not yet been determined.
The next evening there was a gathering at the park to
announce the news to Lowell. There were over 30 golf
carts gathered and the hills
were covered with his
supporters and his friends.
Unbelievably the news of
renaming the park in his
honor had not leaked to
Lowell. He was totally
surprised. (Who said CLS
can't keep a secret?) At first,
he thought it was a joke, but
as the reality began to set in
he was overwhelmed and
Lowell — July 4, 2010
much moved.
Lowell Brown has lived
here since 1990 with his
wife, Helle. He served this community in an official
capacity on the City Council (1996 - 2003) and as Mayor
Pro Tem (1999 - 2000). Lowell has actively participated
on numerous committees and boards, including serving as
a Director of the Economic Development Corporation and
as Chairman for the Zoning Board of Adjustment. He
also once served as Interim Building Inspector.
Lowell has volunteered his time on many endeavors; in
fact, he probably can't remember what all he has
done. Lowell said it was all fun or he wouldn't have done
it. His most recent project was designing the parking area
for golf carts across from Sundial Park. He priced the
materials, gathered the bids, got the final approval from
two committees (no easy task) and oversaw the work on a
very cold day.
No matter what, Lowell always gives selflessly to CLS.
As stated in the resolution, "Be it resolved by the City
Council of the City of Clear Lake Shores, Texas desiring
to honor Lowell Brown and lift up his example, that the
City's Sundial Park be forever named the Lowell Brown
Sundial Park as a memorial and testament of his life,
generosity and commitment."
What a great role model for the men in our community.
It is only fitting that this special man have such a special
park named to honor him.
Island People and Places
By Candace Mann
Comings and Goings:
WOW! Spring has sprung and the buyers
and sellers are all waking up from their long
winter naps. We are starting to see movement again
throughout the Greater Houston area including on our
little paradise island.
I'd like to introduce a couple of my personal friends,
Brent Eyster and Sue Jette, who purchased a nice big
lot on Elm. They are busy cleaning and beautifying it
now and in the near future plan to build their dream
home. They are both very happy to be here and will be a
lot of fun to have as neighbors. If you drive by and see a
man out mowing an 8000 square foot lot with a push
mower...that's Brent. Stop and say “Hi.”
And two of our long term residents are heading back
out cruising. That's right, Mark and Susan Landwer
completed “The Great Loop” and it was so much fun they
are headed out again very soon. If you are wondering
what there next destination is, you'll just have to check
their blog to find out and follow along. Keep up with
them at www.squivot.com. Have a great trip, Mark and
Susan, and hope to see you again on some island shore. :)
Now for some local Real Estate news...
Things are starting to move again and the buyers are
out, so if your considering selling or renting your place,
it's time to get it show ready and get it on the market!!
April is a good month to clean gutters and inspect
downspouts, install or repair window screens and inspect
your roof for warping, aging and moss. Cut back any trees
that are touching your roof.
Enjoy the beautiful colors and smells Springtime brings
to our island!
Latitudes & Attitudes Stops By
The staff of the west coast cruiser’s magazine Latitudes
& Attitudes traverses the country attending boat shows
and events. Recently, after attending the Miami Boat
Show, David Dudgeon sent the owners of the magazine
Bob Bitchin’ and his wife, Jody, winging their way home
while he drove across country with the magazine’s trailer
full of booth display racks, t-shirts, caps, cruiser, and
pirate gear sold at the boat shows and from their website.
On his journey from Florida to California, he made a
stop for a night on Clear Lake Shores staying with
residents Pam House and Steven Bowden. Dave fell in
love with our island when he attended the Lats & Atts
Cruiser’s Party at Watergate Yachting Center a couple of
years ago. Along with some members of the Eric Stone
band who performed at the party, he began to seriously
consider finding a home in the area.
He plans to be back in the area again soon. The Texas
Mariner’s Cruising Association (TMCA) is the organizing
sponsor, in conjunction with the City of Freeport, Texas
of the First Annual Spring Fling -- Freeport Rendezvous,
May 13 through 15. The weekend will culminate with a
Latitudes and Attitudes Cruiser’s Party on Saturday night,
the 14th. You can count on Dave being there to help hand
out the pizza and beer.
Thank you all for the wonderful birthday party and dinner
in honor of Lowell at the Clubhouse on March 5th. We still
get teary-eyed when thinking about the many friends that
attended this event. We did not expect anywhere near the
crowd that was there and were overwhelmed.
Words cannot express the gratitude for all the
wonderful gifts, flowers, birthday cake and specially the
kind words honoring Lowell. The framed pictures taken at
the newly renamed Lowell Brown Sundial Park will be a
wonderful reminder of such a special evening and we love
the golf cart plaque that was presented to Lowell and has
been hung in his workshop. The many beautiful flowers were
enjoyed for a long time and recorded in pictures. Thank
you for the heartfelt cards we received.
A very special thank you goes to Dennis Roberson for
planning this party and to Jo Lynn and Mike Pons for their
enthusiastic support. Kudos to Glen Dowell and Allan
Batchelor for preparing the meats. Also thank you Allan
for the toast made with Lowell’s (former) favorite Miller
High Life beer. We all enjoyed the incredible BBQ, tasty
side dishes and yummy desserts. Good food and great
friends. What a party!
Again we wish to thank everyone for honoring Lowell with
such a heart warming birthday party.
It’s Been A Hard Life, But Interesting: An Interview with Juanita Flurry
By Katherine McIntyre
On March 2, 2011, I interviewed Juanita Flurry, a longtime Clear Lake Shores resident. The interview format is
from www.ourstories.org/adultguide.html and was suggested by Pam House.
The interview was originally recorded on a microcassette. The tape contained sixty minutes, but our interview lasted
another half hour because Juanita had so many stories. At the end of the interview, she told me that “It’s been a hard life
but interesting.” It was a very positive time for both of us. Given a little time to reflect, Juanita decided that she didn’t
want everything she had told me made public, so I returned the tape to her. She approved the following edited version of
her interview.
When and where were you born?
On February 11, 1922 in Ferris, Texas.
Who were your parents?
Mady Jane Neal and Atticus Felton Jones. My father left my mother and me at my grandfather’s home and he did not
return. My mother remarried and my stepfather’s name was Walter Kuehn.
Where did you go to school?
When I started school I attended Fuchs (pronounced “fox”) school in Cypress. And I attended CyFair high school
When I was thirteen, I moved to Calhoun, Georgia where I continued school. My best subject was science and the worst
was spelling. I was always a tomboy.
Did you go to church?
We did not have regular church services, but there were brush arbor meetings that the community would attend.
think that was the Pentecostal church. Now I am Methodist and my children went to Lutheran church schools.
What did you do after leaving school?
My uncle owned the cotton mill and I started working there at age sixteen. I was a spinner. You had to manage two
cones of thread and make sure that it did not break as it was wound down to thread dimension.
What is your ethnic background?
My mother and father were Irish, English and Welsh.
When did you marry?
I married Woodrow Payne in 1939 when I was seventeen. We have a son Jerry Woodrow Payne. I divorced
Woodrow when Jerry was five.
Can you tell me about some of the jobs that you have had?
I was a riveter for Bell Aircraft in Atlanta, Georgia during the Second World War. The
facility was underground and you had to pass security and go through a tunnel to get into
work. Another woman and I riveted the fuselage on B29s. She worked on the inside and I
was on the outside and we could not see each other, but we communicated by knocking on
the wall of the fuselage. I am proud that we never riveted in the wrong place. We won an
award for our work.
It was a B29 that bombed Hiroshima, Japan and I have often wondered if we put the
rivets in that plane’s fuselage.
Bell provided childcare so I took Jerry to work and paid $3.50/week for childcare.
And are there other jobs?
I moved to Houston and had a series of office jobs. I had prepared for them by going to
Elliot Business College and learned typing, shorthand and office procedures. I worked for
the Cancer Society, for Frazier Brick, for Bankers Life in the Epperson Building, and for Earl Norris Buick.
Did you remarry?
I married again and we had a daughter Rosemary. Her father and I divorced.
Tell me about your last job.
I worked for Highams Cadillac. Mr. Highams built the first home in River Oaks, on the corner of Kirby and West
Alabama. He paid $8,000 for it. He went to work on his bicycle.
I was the first employee in the service department. I learned all the departments from the office manager who was
The Islander page 10 April 2011
I

teaching me so that I could take over her job when she left. I enjoyed the work and admired Mr. Highams. The
dealership added Rolls Royce. It became McGinnis Cadillac in 1974 when Mr. Highams died.
Tell me about your marriage to Eddie Flurry and your move to Clear Lake Shores.
We married in 1962. We had been coming to Clear Lake Shores to visit his nephew who lived here and decided that
despite the commute, we would move here. We bought a house from Robert Piehl, the first Clear Lake Shores Mayor
and moved here on Labor Day, 1976. (Mr. Flurry died in 1984.)
Please tell me about your community activity.
One day my husband came home and said that some women were
working very hard in the Clubhouse getting ready for a Thanksgiving
dinner. One woman was working at the stove; she was pregnant and
had a baby on her hip and another child standing next to her. He
thought they could use my help. I stopped unpacking the boxes and
went to the clubhouse and told them that I could help. (Note – that is
35 years ago!)
And you worked in city elections?
Yes, I worked as the assistant judge in the election where George
Kessler won on a write-in vote. We had very little notice that he
would be a write-in candidate, and had to call for information how to
handle the write-in vote. All votes were recorded on a long roll of
paper, not the paper ballots as used later. To tally the vote, we spread
it out on the floor of the Clubhouse, got down on our hands and knees
and counted each vote. There were three of us, and we had to agree on
the tally.
We could see people looking in the clubhouse windows at us after
the polls closed. I’m sure they were wondering what we were doing on
the floor! As I remember George Kessler had 98 votes and beat Ron
The Market Report
Join Us On Our 2nd Birthday
By Carol Trono
The Farmer’s Market turns two in April and since this is
Clear Lake Shores . . . that calls for a party!
Join your neighbors Saturday morning, April 16, at the
market’s Second Birthday Bash. Enjoy a cup of fair-trade
organic coffee and an almond croissant or meaty breakfast
taco while being serenaded by one of our favorite local
musicians, Mickey Hobbs.
Pick up a limited edition, Farmer’s Market reusable cotton market bag to fill
with all your favorite market goodies. Free bags will be given to the first 200
customers that morning.
All the many volunteers who worked so tirelessly to make the market a reality
and help it take flight the past two years are invited and encouraged to join in the
celebration. We’re hoping to have a lot of islanders on hand to help us thank
these folks for creating such a terrific asset to our community.
Many of the market’s regular vendors are planning special promotions
that day, and Bay Area Turning Point will host a bake sale to support
their resale shop. More activities are being planned. It should be a fun,
flavorful day at the market!
Come early and stay awhile! Saturday, April 16, 8 am to noon.
New Home for an Old Boat
The boat is a 34 ft. long pilot gig built by the Texas
A&M Wooden Boat School in Galveston. Gene
Horton purchased the boat many years back to include
with two other pilot gigs of British heritage as part of a
fleet of hand-powered craft that he and his wife, Janet,
offered members of Houston Rowing Club (HRC).
The HRC was a private venture offering alternative
workouts for folks disenchanted with gyms. Each gig
supported a rowing crew of six plus a coxswain.
Weekends the members cruised Clear lake, breakfasting
at local restaurants.
For more than a decade, headquarters for HRC was
on a barge much like those once popular in England. Hurricane Ike destroyed the building plus some 30 small craft and
the gig JOLLY JANET was swept into Galveston Bay.
The owner of a waterfront restaurant in the San Leon/Bacliff area salvaged the JOLLY JANET and hung it above
diners as a visual attraction. The restaurant is the Topwater Grill and commands a spectacular view of the bay plus great
food!
On Gene’s 80th birthday, his four sons and their wives treated Janet and him to a meal at the restaurant. To their
surprise the party was seated directly beneath this memorable hull.
Gene reports that the gigs also saw service as team-building platforms for numerous Fortune 500 firms including
Conoco-Phillips, Amgen, Southwest Airlines, Exxon-Mobil and Odfjell-Baytank. He sorely misses the fun and
camaraderie that rowing the gig provided.
The Island’s Robin Hood
Eleven year old, Savannah Massey, has proved once
again that she is a champion archer. Savannah, the
daughter of Mark Massey, competed in the Sate of Texas
S c h o l a r s h i p A r c h e r y
Championship on February
25. Following up on her
1st place win when she was
nine years old, this year she
won 2nd place in her age
group. This qualifies her to
compete in the national
contest to be held in May.
The Texas-National Archery
in the Schools Program
promotes student education
and participation in the
s hooting sports. T h e
program’s focus is to provide International-style target
archery training in 4th-12th grade physical education
classes. The Texas - National Archery in the Schools
Program (TASP) is the Texas State affiliate of the
National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP)
adopted by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Along with her two brothers (the three are triplets),
Savannah has honed her bow skills on the archery target
in her dad’s yard on Pine Road. She competes for St.
Stephen’s Episcopal School.
Island Cooking
By Susan Perez
Spring is here and we tend to go a
little lighter with our food.
I like this recipe a lot because it is a
lighter fare and it uses our wonderful shrimp we find here
in our area.
This is nothing like the wonderful Remoulade Sauce
that is based with a mayonnaise. This is called by some
Red Remoulade Sauce which is very popular in New
Orleans and the Gulf Coast. This sauce will keep for a
couple of weeks in the fridge and is good with a
wonderful crusty bread and white wine. Lighter fare for
the spring and summer!
Salad:
2 pounds shrimp, either very small or you can cut
the larger ones up. I prefer getting larger and
cutting. It is always best to cook your shrimp
yourself and leave the heads on. Cook, shell and
cut.
2 celery stalks, thinly sliced
1 heaping tablespoon capers
Red leaf lettuce leaves
Tomato wedges
Hard-boiled eggs
Red Remoulade Sauce
Makes about 3 cups
1 cup ketchup
2 teaspoons minced garlic
¼ teaspoon red pepper (cayenne)
4 tablespoons paprika
½ cup prepared horseradish
½ cup Zataraines Creole mustard
6 green onions, roughly chopped, including green
tops
1 cup tightly packed parsley leaves
½ cup red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 cups Canola oil
Begin by making the Red Remoulade Sauce. Combine
all ingredients, except oil in the work bowl of a food
processor fitted with the steel blade. Process until smooth.
With machine running add the Canola oil in a slow steady
stream through the feeding tube until thickened. Process
an additional minute or two. Refrigerate as long as 2
weeks. If sauce separates, shake it before serving to bring
it back together.
To serve the salad, toss shrimp with the celery and
capers. Place on lettuce and put tomatoes and halved
boiled eggs around the salad. Enjoy.
It’s Almost Time for the Easter Egg Hunt!
Hey everybody it’s almost time for the
annual Easter Egg Hunt and Party. We
will have the party at the Clubhouse as
usual on Saturday, April 23 rd starting at
10 AM. There will be games, crafts,
music and of course the Easter Bunny
me out. I will need you all again this year. We will need
donations of baked goods for the cakewalk, help
decorating the Clubhouse, volunteers to run the food and
game stations, hiding the eggs and help cleaning up after
the party. If any of you have ideas for a booth with
games, face painting, an outdoor activity or whatever, I
am open to new ideas. Just give me a call and we will
make room for you at the party. Hopefully lots of kids
will show up for the party so I will need lots of help.
If you or your kids would like to volunteer we will
begin setting up at 9:00. If you are donating baked goods
please also bring them at 9:00. Please give me a call at
281.804.4962 as soon as you can and let me know how
you would like to help. I really enjoy hosting this party
and I look forward to seeing all of the kids again this year.
Yard of the Month
by Judy Young
Well, we’ve just finished a second year
when many of our plants either fried in
last summer’s drought or froze down to
the ground. And so we start all over again…. I think I can –
I know I can – I can – I can.
The yard chosen for our first yard of the month this year
continued to be colorful and inviting in February even when
many of ours could be best described as b..r..o..w..n. That’s
the yard of Amanda Booren and Jay Fenwick located a
short distance from Deep Hole Park at 506 East Shore
Drive, a ground level house they previously rented and then
purchased 10 days before Ike.
Amanda and Jay had a stroke of luck as they began to
work on their yard. Amanda works at San Jac where a silent
auction was held this past fall in connection with a
scholarship fund benefit. They had the winning bid for the
landscaping auction item. That allowed them to have all
their beds put in and the front bed that borders their patio
planted with baby hawthorns, dusty miller and pansies.
A stone patio and walkway were put in by our local CLS
Billy Martin. Whereas most patios are in back yards, theirs
is in front of their house and looks absolutely perfect there.
Bordered by the flower bed, with its chairs, stone mounted
fire bowl and potted pigmy palm it gives the front of the
house a congenial look that says, “come on over and sit a
while.”
To the right of the patio is another bed planted with
camellias and ginger. Amanda has supplemented the
landscaped plants with various hanging baskets and potted
plants such as geraniums and bougainvillea for even more
color. And then there are the non-growing decorations that
always add interest to a yard while saying a bit about the
residents such as the American flag waving out in front and
Texas stepping stones that say we love our country and we
love our state, a duck beside the walk, the March St.
Patrick’s Day flag and now the Easter decorations make
you think if you stand and watch long enough the Easter
bunny will walk right out of the front door.
They are just now getting started on the back yard where
they’ve put in one bed against the house planted with
camellias and daisies. Their property is a rather odd shape.
The front faces East Shore Drive. Then it makes an “L”
behind the Perez house and the back faces Hawthorne. They
have planted fruit trees along the Hawthorne fence line.
When I asked Amanda what fruit we were going to be
able to pick from the street, she said, “limes, satsumas and
navel oranges.” I suggested they plant a fig tree and told
her I really do like figs. Then she tactfully and gracefully
told me the story of how her mother said they should plant
an avocado tree, whereupon she reminded her mother that it
was their yard. Oh well, so much for the figs I guess. Such
is life.
Three Ways to Help Clean Up Clear Creek
By Mike Pons
With a warm breeze in the air, it may be time for some
Spring cleaning. If you’d like to be a bit more ambitious
than simply dusting those cobwebs off your ceiling fans,
here are three ways you can help direct those tidying
urges toward cleaning up Clear Creek.
1st Way:
Go Carting for a Cause
Saturday, April 30, 11:30 am – Late
On Saturday, April 30, Golf Carts of Texas will hold its
3rd Annual Poker Run with all proceeds to be donated
to the Clear Creek Environmental Foundation. This is a
fun event that benefits a great non-profit organization.
The event is organized David Beacher, Judy Fox (both
with Golf Carts of Texas), and Tammy Mazoch (Clear
Lake Power Boat Service) along with a dozen volunteers.
The previous poker runs have seen up to 85 golf carts and
300 riders participate.
The mission of Clear
Creek Environmental
Foundation is to
preserve and enhance
the Clear Creek and
Clear Lake environment
to maintain its natural
resources and beauty for
the present and future.
In the past decade, the
Foundation’s thousands of volunteers have collected tons
of trash, tires, discarded oil, and abandoned appliances
from the Clear Lake area. They’ve also been responsible
for planting miles of grass to reestablish the original
habitat along the Clear Creek watershed. For more
information about the amazing work of this year’s poker
run beneficiary, please refer to their web site
www.clearcreekcleanup.org.
This year’s event begins and ends at Jackie’s
Brickhouse where CLS residents Jackie and Steve will
host breakfast and dinner buffets for the registered
participants. Golf carts will depart from Jackie’s at
11:15am escorted by Clear Lake Shores and Kemah
police officers to five different locations to get
participant’s cards stamped for the drawing of the poker
hand back at Jackie’s Brickhouse at the end. The final
activities include drawing of the poker hand, announcing
the winner, and entertainment, usually lasting late into the
night. The 1st place winner gets a custom built golf cart
donated by Dave Beacher. The 2nd and 3rd place
winners receive cash prizes. An entry fee of $65.00 entry
fee covers two people, two shirts, breakfast and dinner for
both, and one poker hand. It is $25.00 for each additional
person (covering shirt, breakfast and dinner). Preregistration
is April 27 and 28th from 6 – 8 pm at Jackie’s
Brickhouse. Registration can also be completed the day
of the event from 9:30 to 11:00 am at Jackie’s.
For additional information and entry forms, please
check the websites www.golfcartsoftexas.com or
www.clpbs.com or stop by the office at Golf Carts of
2nd Way:
9 am – 12 Noon
Since the first
Adopt-A -Beach
cleanup in 1986,
more than 406,000
Island Gardening Tips
By Julie Moncur
Here's hoping for April showers!
But if rains don't materialize
be sure to give all your plants in
ground, pots and hanging baskets periodic soakings to
keep the spring growth going strong.
When thinking of what to plant new, now is a great
time to ride around or walk around the island and
make note of winter freeze survivor plants that are
still thriving and even blooming now. This will give
you ideas for your own landscape.
If you have not already done so, clear out dead plants
to get ready to start new. Some perennials like hibiscus
could eventually come back, but it will take a lot
of time, patience and fertilizer like fish and seaweed
emulsion. Look at this as a good time for a fresh start.
Feed established roses every 4 to 6 weeks with rose
specialty fertilizer. Fight powdery mildew with fungicide.
Fertilize lawns in the spring after grass (not weeds)
puts out new growth. Use a 15-5-10 fertilizer. If you
already have numerous weeds, try Bonide herbicide.
It comes in a hose end sprayer.
Check all roses for black spot fungus. Treat with
Funginex or Benomyl at 7 to 10 day intervals.
Set out vincas after mid-April to help reduce problems
with fungal blight.
If you planted new trees in January or February and
they’re showing new growth, feed them lightly with a
15-5-10 fertilizer.
Watch for fire blight on pear and loquat. Prune out
infected parts and after each cut, dip shears in alcohol
to reduce spread of disease.
Be sure to mulch new landscape trees and shrubs.
They will not be as stressed and will grow significantly
faster than transplants that are not mulched.
Water logged areas will love great ground cover
plants now available at the local Home Depot.
Time to prune azaleas and other spring-blooming
shrubs as they finish blooming.
Pinch out the growing tips of coleus, mums, copper
plants and other tall-growing plants to maintain a
more compact attractive shape.
Plant bluebells, cleome, coral vine, four-o’clocks,
plumbago, hibiscus and shrimp plants for summer
color.
Add any of the following bulbs: gloriosa lily, daylily,
butterfly lily, spider lily, rain lily, alpinia and tuberose.
Fertilize bulbs with bloodmeal or 21-0-0 after they
finish blooming. Don’t remove spring foliage yet, it’s
what feeds next year’s bulb.
Toward the end of April plant caladiums. Whites and
greens do well in the shade. Reds need partial sun, but
not too much. Also time to plant impatiens, coleus,
begonias, and pentas in shady areas.
