Survey of anaesthesia, vaccination and deworming treatment in captive Hartmann’s mountain zebra,
Equus zebra hartmannae, and Grevy’s zebra, Equus grevyi

The study aimed to collect information about anaesthetic protocols and side effects related to anaesthesia in
both species within the different member institutions of the Grevy’s zebra and Hartmann’s mountain zebra EEPs.
The second part of the questionnaire looked into prophylactic measures: vaccination and de-worming
treatments, used in different organisations/countries.
The results should advise EEP participants on the pros and cons of different methods when dealing with
anaesthesia of prophylactic treatment.
So far only preliminary results are available which you can find below.
Analysis of anaesthetic protocols showed that:
15.4% of all HMZ institutions use a protocol with premedication, for which 40% use detomidine.
More than 50% of anaesthesia substances used a simple combination of etorphine and acepromazine
(Immobilon ®)
