The movement data we are obtaining will provide a much better understanding of the seasonal
movement patterns of Hartmann’s mountain zebras in the communal conservancies and concession
areas in between Etosha and Skeleton Coast national parks. Using digital maps we have already
obtained (e.g., Fig. 2), we will also be able to investigate the factors that influence the zebras’
movements, including elevation, water sources, habitat types, roads, tourism hubs, hunting areas, and
man-made features such as the veterinary cordon fence.
features (Nov 20, 2011 to Apr 23, 2012)
Next steps
This coming summer, we plan to retrieve the first three GPS collars we deployed and begin analyzing
the data. We will continue to provide maps of the satellite-tracked zebras’ movements on a semiannual
basis to Namibia’s Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the communal conservancies in
our study area.
