Bruce County is a leading producer of oats in the Province of Ontario.<br />

area 51.4 per cent has increased in value through the efforts of the owner, <strong>and</strong><br />

is called improved l<strong>and</strong>. The remaining 23.7 per cent of the occupied l<strong>and</strong> is<br />

unimproved <strong>and</strong> consists of woodl<strong>and</strong>, natural pasture <strong>and</strong> waste l<strong>and</strong>. As<br />

indicated in Table 9 the improved l<strong>and</strong> consists of:<br />

Approximately 94 per cent of the improved l<strong>and</strong> supports pasture <strong>and</strong> field<br />

crops. The large proportion of pasture is desirable in an area where many of<br />

the farms are devoted to stock raising. Only small acreages are used for<br />

orchards, market gardens <strong>and</strong> small fruits, <strong>and</strong> these are located chiefly near<br />

Lake Huron where the climate is moderated by the presence of the large body<br />

of water.<br />

The acreages of the various field crops grown in the County for 1948 are<br />

shown in Table 10. These figures are taken from the Annual Report of the<br />

Statistics Branch (1948), Ontario Department of <strong><strong>Agri</strong>culture</strong>. The total acreage<br />

of field crops (323,090) differs slightly from that of the 1941 Census (311,067),<br />

because the records apply to two different years. The following table shows the<br />

predominance of hay <strong>and</strong> clover, oats, mixed grain, alfalfa <strong>and</strong> fall wheat in<br />

the acreage of field crops of Bruce County. The County is one of the major<br />

flax producers in the Province, but has small acreages of other cash crops. The<br />

proport!ion of field crops grown presents a picture of the dominant type of<br />
