I. READING<br />

In July 1969 three American astronauts: Edwin<br />

Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins started their<br />

famous space flight towards the Moon by Apollo 11<br />

spaceship. It neared the moon at the speed of 6500<br />

kilometres an hour. ThenAldrin andArmstrong went into the<br />

landing spacecraft named the Eagle. Aldrin was to wait in<br />

orbit. On Earth people held their breaths. Humans were<br />

landing on the Moon! About 500 million people all over the<br />

world were watching TV when the Eagle landed. After six<br />

hours of preparation the astronauts opened the door. Neil<br />

Armstrong was the first man to step down onto the moon's<br />

surface. He said: "That is one small step for a man. One<br />

giant leap for mankind." It happened on 21 July.<br />

The astronauts spent more than 21 hours on the<br />

moon doing various experiments. They collected 30<br />

kilograms of rock and soil. They left an American flag and<br />

some scientific equipment. They were able to move easily<br />

and quickly because the moon's gravity is six times smaller<br />

than the Earth's.<br />
