Europe Day Assembly at The <strong>Taipei</strong><br />

European School Sec<strong>on</strong>dary Campus<br />

<strong>on</strong> the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented<br />

his proposal <strong>on</strong> the creati<strong>on</strong> of an organized Europe,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dispensable to the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance of peaceful<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>s. This proposal, known as the ’Schuman<br />

Declarati<strong>on</strong>,’ is c<strong>on</strong>sidered to be the orig<strong>in</strong>al impetus for the<br />

creati<strong>on</strong> of what is now the European Uni<strong>on</strong>. The day is<br />

celebrated across the school annually, with a different theme<br />

each year. This year is European Year aga<strong>in</strong>st Poverty and Social<br />

Exclusi<strong>on</strong>’.<br />

Europe Day was celebrated <strong>on</strong> the 7th May this year and<br />

students, staff and h<strong>on</strong>ored guests gathered together to mark<br />

this important day. At the Sec<strong>on</strong>dary Campus we were<br />

rem<strong>in</strong>ded of the importance of reach<strong>in</strong>g out to others, and two<br />

groups of students reflected up<strong>on</strong> their <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> service<br />

work through two significant projects.<br />

IB students made a presentati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> Tabitha Cambodia. In<br />

June this year, over forty students will travel to Cambodia to<br />

build houses <strong>in</strong> remote areas, f<strong>in</strong>anced by funds raised at school.<br />

H2 Students reflected up<strong>on</strong> their work with Harm<strong>on</strong>y Home<br />

this year, hav<strong>in</strong>g not <strong>on</strong>ly risen over NT$200,000 but more<br />

significantly worked with the organizati<strong>on</strong> and the children at<br />

<strong>on</strong>e of the Associati<strong>on</strong>’s shelters.<br />

C<strong>in</strong>dy Chen expla<strong>in</strong>s the challenges faced by those with<br />

HIv here <strong>in</strong> Taiwan and the journey of Harm<strong>on</strong>y Home<br />

towards foundati<strong>on</strong> status. The presentati<strong>on</strong> culm<strong>in</strong>ated<br />

<strong>in</strong> a film produced by the H2 students to expla<strong>in</strong> their<br />

work at the shelter.<br />
