THE HISTORY OF THE PROFESSION<br />
Introduction-The First 100 Years<br />
Researching and writing the one hundred year his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> the <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Podiatric Medicine<br />
presents an interesting and exciting challenge. In order <strong>to</strong> have a complete picture <strong>of</strong> the growth <strong>of</strong> the college,<br />
it is necessary <strong>to</strong> place it within the context <strong>of</strong> the his<strong>to</strong>rical events <strong>of</strong> the 20th century as well as the emergence<br />
<strong>of</strong> the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> podiatry, and the changes that have taken place in the United States, in <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> State<br />
and in <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> City.<br />
The college opened on May 22, 1911 as the School <strong>of</strong> Chiropody, and the world was changing dramatically.<br />
It might be fair <strong>to</strong> say that the past one hundred years have been filled with a plethora <strong>of</strong> events that cannot be<br />
rivaled by any <strong>of</strong> the centuries that preceded it. We went from the mass production <strong>of</strong> au<strong>to</strong>mobiles <strong>to</strong> putting<br />
a man on the moon. We fought in two world wars and participated in at least another half dozen military engagements,<br />
including <strong>our</strong> current conflicts half a world away.<br />
In politics, we had two Roosevelts who served as president, a Catholic elected <strong>to</strong> that <strong>of</strong>fice who<br />
was assassinated, an ac<strong>to</strong>r who became president, and an election in which a black man and two women<br />
were running for the highest <strong>of</strong>fices in the land and the black man won. We even had one president<br />
who resigned in disgrace after a scandal during his administration. A father and son (not the first) served<br />
as president and another was subjected <strong>to</strong> an impeachment proceeding (unsuccessful) because <strong>of</strong> alleged<br />
lying about inappropriate sexual activities, and for the first time in <strong>our</strong> his<strong>to</strong>ry, we had a presidential<br />
election decided by the U.S. Supreme C<strong>our</strong>t.<br />
Advances in science and technology exploded during this century. We went from sending messages by telegraph<br />
over wires placed on poles <strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> ability <strong>to</strong> speak and text over wireless networks that straddle the globe. While x-rays<br />
are still being used in medicine, also available <strong>to</strong> podiatrists, are PET, CT and MRI scans. Surgical techniques<br />
have advanced from the use <strong>of</strong> instruments that had not changed much for a few hundred years <strong>to</strong> <strong>our</strong> current ability<br />
<strong>to</strong> use laser techniques and robotics. Treatment or vaccines for prevention <strong>of</strong> disease such as measles, mumps, polio,<br />
yellow fever and tuberculosis have been discovered or invented.<br />
Likewise, <strong>our</strong> entertainment went from live shows at local theaters <strong>to</strong> a huge motion picture industry that<br />
also uses cutting edge computer technology <strong>to</strong> create worlds that are fantastic. We can record <strong>our</strong> high definition<br />
television shows (in 3D) whether we are home or not and we can even eliminate the commercials, if we wish.<br />
Even the technology <strong>of</strong> the sports that we play has been changed by the invention <strong>of</strong> new materials that allow<br />
us <strong>to</strong> hit, throw or bat better than anytime in <strong>our</strong> past (with steroids?).<br />

THE PRESENT<br />
The Mission, Vision and Goals <strong>of</strong> the <strong>College</strong><br />
The <strong>New</strong> <strong>York</strong> <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> Podiatric Medicine serves a community <strong>of</strong> interest which includes<br />
the immediate <strong>College</strong> community <strong>of</strong> students, faculty, administra<strong>to</strong>rs and staff, and the <strong>College</strong>’s alumni, as<br />
well as the communities <strong>of</strong> its affiliated hospitals and clinics, their patient populations, the podiatric community<br />
as beneficiaries <strong>of</strong> continuing education, the pr<strong>of</strong>essional and scientific communities as users <strong>of</strong> research findings,<br />
and the regional lay public as consumers <strong>of</strong> information about health care <strong>of</strong> the lower extremity.<br />
In order <strong>to</strong> serve this diverse community <strong>of</strong> interest, NYCPM pursues a comprehensive mission via a number<br />
<strong>of</strong> specific goals, which are expressed in sufficiently concrete terms so that their achievement can be directly or<br />
indirectly measured. The statements <strong>of</strong> the Vision, Mission and Goals <strong>of</strong> NYCPM are as follows:<br />
Vision: To be an institution <strong>of</strong> excellence in the field <strong>of</strong> Podiatric Medical Education<br />
Mission: It is the <strong>College</strong>'s mission <strong>to</strong> provide, <strong>to</strong> students seeking careers as doc<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> podiatric<br />
Medicine, a comprehensive medical educational program specializing in the medical and surgical<br />
management <strong>of</strong> the lower extremity, with the ability <strong>to</strong> diagnose systemic diseases and their lower extremity<br />
manifestations. The <strong>College</strong> will prepare students for eligibility for Graduate Medical Education,<br />
licensure and practice. Furthermore, it is the <strong>College</strong>'s mission <strong>to</strong> promote state-<strong>of</strong>-the art<br />
patient care in affiliated facilities, and <strong>to</strong> pursue research <strong>to</strong> continuously advance the art and science<br />
<strong>of</strong> podiatric medicine. The <strong>College</strong> accomplishes this mission by striving <strong>to</strong> achieve the following goals:<br />
I. Provide a quality educational environment based upon a comprehensive pre-clinical and<br />
clinical science curriculum.<br />
II. Provide skilled and qualified faculty <strong>to</strong> deliver the educational program.<br />
III. Recruit, accept, enroll and retain highly qualified students.<br />
IV. Provide student services that support the podiatric medical educational program.<br />
V. Develop quality graduate medical education leading <strong>to</strong> eligibility for Board Certification.<br />
