Intermediate Grade Sample Classroom Tasks:<br />

English Proficiency Level<br />

Beginning<br />

Focusing on a topic of interest to the class, students navigate<br />

a personal computer as they listen to, take notes on,<br />

and follow instructions given by the teacher for a task such<br />

as using a search engine.<br />

Performance indicators: 2, 3<br />

Intermediate<br />

Students navigate specific websites that the teacher provides<br />

on the Internet and gather information on a topic of<br />

interest. They record steps followed and prepare a set of<br />

instructions for peers to use in researching this topic.<br />

Performance indicators: 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 15, 16<br />

Students cut out pictures of foods from magazines and<br />

newspapers. They label the pictures with teacher assistance.<br />

Students produce a list of the foods their families<br />

frequently buy at the grocery store. Then they role-play<br />

shopping at the grocery store, using pictures and paper<br />

money.<br />

Performance indicators: 3, 5, 12<br />

Students survey their neighborhood and write a list of the<br />

stores found, including items that might be purchased<br />

there. Then they write a report comparing and contrasting<br />

these stores (e.g., in regard to diversity of foods, prices,<br />

patrons, employees/owners, etc.). Reports are compiled<br />

into a class booklet about shopping in the neighborhood to<br />

share with other <strong>ESL</strong> students and their families.<br />

Interm<br />

At the beginning of a theme study, students brainstorm list<br />

of topics of interest for which they would like to check out<br />

books from the school library. They take notes while<br />

exploring the library with the teacher to become familiar<br />

with functions, sections, and resources of the library.<br />

Students find at least two books, journals, articles, etc. to<br />

check out and bring back to class to begin theme study.<br />

Performance indicators: 1, 2, 3, 5<br />

In addition to the Beginning task, students review with the<br />

teacher the parts of the school library. Then they prepare<br />

an advanced organizer about sections of the library and<br />

compose questions to ask the librarian in an upcoming<br />

library visit.<br />
