16 Research is a core activity ong>ofong> the Victoria ong>andong> Albert Museum ong>andong> is carried out in all its departments. Some research concerns the identification ong>andong> interpretation ong>ofong> individual objects. Other studies contribute to systematic research. This develops the public understong>andong>ing ong>ofong> the art ong>andong> artefacts ong>ofong> many ong>ofong> the great cultures ong>ofong> the world. Furniture conservators have developed specialisms within their discipline, such as modern furniture, ecclesiastical objects, architectural woodwork ong>andong> models, objects from South Asia, veneered surfaces ong>andong> decorative surfaces, including gilding ong>andong> oriental lacquer. Meeting with Senior Furniture Conservator Shayne Rivers SHAYNE RIVERS’ roles In practical conservation, include condition assessment, cleaning ong>andong> consolidation to stabilise pieces from the Victoria ong>andong> Albert Museum's collection for photography, transport ong>andong> display. She also is responsible for preventive conservation - for example, checking for insect infestation - ong>andong> emergency response planning. Her research ong>andong> many publications look into conservation treatments ong>andong> ethics. Shayne has recently coauthored the most up to date ong>andong> comprehensive text manual for prong>ofong>essional furniture conservators. Visit to Science section with 20th Century materials polymer scientist, Brenda Keneghan. The Science section aims to contribute to the knowledge ong>andong> understong>andong>ing ong>ofong> museum objects ong>andong> their environment. It works in collaboration with the ong>Conservationong> department, other museum staff ong>andong> fellow prong>ofong>essionals ong>andong> concentrates on collection-centred work, meeting clearly agreed goals ong>andong> balancing education, research ong>andong> consultancy. The skills within the multi-disciplinary team include: chemistry, physics, materials science, conservation science, polymer science ong>andong> microscopy. On-going museum initiatives that fall within the sphere include: environmental monitoring ong>andong> advice; lighting ong>andong> solar control policies ong>andong> implementation; dust monitoring; technical examination ong>ofong> artefact constituents ong>andong> response to environments; paint ong>andong> pigment analysis; ong>andong> display cases. is currently in his seventh year as President ong>ofong> the Chicago Area ong>Conservationong> Group (CACG) ong>andong> serves on the Board ong>ofong> Directors for the AIC as Director ong>ofong> Communications. Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College (BCUC) is one ong>ofong> nine specialised university run courses in the UK. Students have the option to continue their studies to Mphil Or PhD level. The study is a workshop/studio based experience with supporting studies ong>ofong> material science, history ong>ofong> furniture ong>andong> its treatment. Students negotiate the particular areas or techniques they wish to research from the wide range ong>ofong> historic furniture, including Twentieth Century furniture, for both their project work ong>andong> thesis. The course includes studies in ong>Conservationong>, Ethics, Furniture History, ong>Restorationong> Theory, Material Science ong>andong> Practice. The final period ong>ofong> the course sees the integration ong>ofong> theoretical ong>andong> practical studies exhibited by the dissertation ong>andong> the completed restored or conserved pieces.

17 Workshop visit with Paul Tear, course leader at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College (BCUC) PAUL TEAR was previously Senior Conservator at the Wallace collection in London, as well as heading the United Kingdom Institute ong>ofong> Conservators ( furniture division). Paul has been a major player in the in modernising the field ong>ofong> furniture conservation, bringing innovative ong>andong> creative thinking to simplify ong>andong> solve problems encountered in the technical end ong>ofong> conservation. Other staff include Senior Lecturer Campbell Norman –Smith ong>andong> Principle Lecturer David Gillet . Campbell has an in-depth knowledge on the material use ong>ofong> shellac ong>andong> has undertaken much ong>ofong> his own research on the subject. The Twentieth Century Furniture Research Group (TCFRG) is also situated within the faculty ong>ofong> designs at BCUC. The central aim ong>ofong> the TCFRG is to promote ong>andong> preserve furniture manufactured in the Chilterns throughout the twentieth century. President, Jake Kaner’s thesis studies the early polymeric materials encountered in furniture, 1880-1920: ‘Their Chemistry, ong>Conservationong>, History ong>andong> Manufacture.’ Jake’s focus has been on casein plastics ong>andong> cellulose nitrate, though his research ong>andong> knowledge ong>ofong> material history in the furniture trade is most contemporary ong>andong> complete. He has been reviewing previous techniques ong>andong> investigating new ones, which allow for the identification ong>ofong> early polymeric materials ong>andong> stong>andong>ardising the analytical, chemical ong>andong> macroscopic procedures d) Windsor Castle furniture conservation branch, The Pug Yard, Windsor, UK Windsor Castle is an ong>ofong>ficial residence ong>ofong> The Queen ong>andong> the largest occupied castle in the world. A royal home ong>andong> fortress for over 900 years, the Castle remains a working palace today. Windsor Castle is the oldest ong>andong> largest occupied castle in the world. The twentieth-century history ong>ofong> the Castle is dominated by the major fire that started on 20 November 1992. It began in the Private Chapel, when a spotlight came into contact with a curtain ong>andong> ignited the material. Nine principal rooms ong>andong> over 100 other rooms covering an area ong>ofong> 9,000 square metres were damaged or destroyed by the fire, approximately one-fifth ong>ofong> the Castle area. The next five years were spent restoring Windsor Castle to its former glory. It resulted in the greatest historic building project to have been undertaken by Britain in the twentieth century, reviving many traditional crafts. The Pug Yard at Windsor Castle is located within the Castle precinct ong>andong> houses the furniture conservation department. Adrian Smith is Senior Conservator ong>andong> Assistant to the Master ong>ofong> the Royal Household, controlling the furniture workshops including polishing, repairs, upholstery ong>andong> gilding. Adrian is also president ong>ofong> the furniture division, United Kingdom Institute ong>ofong> Conservators, (Now ICON). The Institute ong>ofong> ong>Conservationong>. ong>Conservationong>(C)-branch at Windsor are responsible for the conservation/restoration ong>andong> maintenance ong>ofong> the furniture belonging to the Royal Household, those being objects which are lived with day-to-day by the extended Royal Family on numerous estates in the UK. Much ong>ofong> their work also involves the upkeep ong>ofong> functional furniture used for ceremonial ong>andong> state occasions, which tends to take a battering due to high use. C-branch has five or six furniture restorers/conservators/polishes, two gilders, ong>andong> two conservation upholsters. The department works on a semi-
