GOODSON CALCULATORS (AUST.) PTY. LTD., pays tribute to
the enthusiasm and unwavering support of the business from its
beginning to the present time given by Mrs. Norah Sale. As the
saying goes “behind every successful man there is a good woman”.
In this case it is “behind this successful company is a good woman”
and that woman is Norah sale.
KENNETH SALE - Born 1912 in Manchester England , he attended Leigh
Grammar School, a school whose founders included some of the early
members of the Sale family. Upon leaving school, Kenneth started his
working life in the Manchester Cotton Mills. Looking to satisfy his
mechanical abilities, he applied for and was accepted by Burroughs Ltd to
train as a mechanical engineer in Nottingham. It was here Ken met and
subsequently married his lifelong partner Norah.
On completing his course, he commenced work as a adding and accounting
machine technician in Burroughs London office. In 1937 Ken was assigned
responsibility for the territory of South East England, and he and Norah
purchased their first home in Tonbridge, Kent.
At the outset of WWII, Kenneth enlisted in the British Navy, however due to
the essential nature of his work with Burroughs, he was considered to be in
an essential service and his enlistment was declined. During the war years
many dangers were faced whilst travelling round to various parts to repair
1912 - 1991
machines for the banks and the defence forces. On one night whilst travelling to
a job, his car ran into the back of a steamroller. During that time cars could not use their headlights,
making night time travel hazardous.
After the war Kenneth had a desire to relocate himself and his family to the greener pastures of
New Zealand. He wanted to purchase an ex Navy Fairmile Patrol Boat and sail there, but Norah
whilst agreeing to the move thought a conventional passenger ship would be more desirable. So in
November 1947 Kenneth, Norah and their two children Barry (6) and Barbara (4) set sail for
Sydney in the passenger ship “Moreton Bay”.
Upon arrival in Sydney at easter 1948 the family was booked on a connecting flying boat service to
New Zealand. At that time the Sunderland flying boats were grounded with the Sale family having
an unexpected long stay in Sydney. Whilst in Sydney, Kenneth made contact with Burroughs
Australia and upon learning of his predicament and being made fully aware of his abilities as a
technician, took the opportunity to persuade him to stay in Australia. Finally after consultation with
Burrough Head Office in Detroit U.S.A., Kenneth agreed to stay in Australia and was assigned a
major city territory including the banks and one of Burrough’s largest customers, David Jones Ltd.
In 1950, Kenneth was approached by David Jones to be employed by them to be their full time
accounting machine technician. Whilst he declined the offer, he expressed an interest in starting his
own business and being available to David Jones as a priority. This was agreed and Goodson
Calculators (Aust.) Pty. Ltd., was born.
Two of Kenneths’ workmates in Burroughs London office left the company to start their own
business and called it Goodson Calculators. Their names were Goodwin and Pearson and hence the
name Goodson. When Kenneth Sale started his business an agreement was made to source
machines and spare parts from Goodson England and to share the same company name.

OUR LOGO:
GOODSON CALCULATORS (AUST.) PTY. LTD commenced operating in 1950. At that time
the company specialised in the reconditioning and resale of Burroughs Accounting Machines, as
well as the servicing, repairing and reconditioning of Burroughs Adding Machines, Cash Registers,
and Comptometer Calculators.
In the early years the company developed a loyal customer base of companies who purchased
Goodson reconditioned machines. The company was renowned for its technical excellence. In
1962, Ken Sale's son Barry joined the business bringing with him fours years experience selling
new Adding machines and Cash Registers in Australia and the U.K. At that time the decision was
taken for Goodson to commence selling new Adding Machines, Calculators and Cash Registers in
addition to the reconditioned equipment. It was Barry Sale's function to expand the sales arm of
Goodsons.
A significant growth period for the company happened around 1966 when Australia converted its
money from Pounds, Shillings and Pence to a decimal system of Dollars and Cents. All existing
Adding Calculating and Accounting Machines had to either be converted to decimal or replaced
with new. This not only created huge sales but due to the scarcity of new product, also created
considerable amounts of conversion work on existing equipment. The company worked night and
weekends to satisfy customer demands. From that time on, the company enjoyed sustained growth
until in 1969, when it was decided that if the company was to grow substantially into the future it
would need to import and develop its own agencies.
At that time Barry Sale visited a developing Asia to try to secure its own agencies. One of the
companies he had discussions with was Citizen Business Machines a subsidiary of Citizen Watch
Co. In 1970 Goodsons became the Australian agents for Citizen Business Machines, a position it
holds to the present day. In 1972 the subsidiary company, Goodson Calculators Imports Pty. Ltd.,
was formed specifically for the importing and distributing business.
The company continued to grow at a steady pace however some difficulties were experienced in
the early 1980s in line with a slump in the Australian economy. In 1987, CBM commenced
manufacturing Point of Sale printers and offered them to Goodsons. This was a turning point in the
company's history, changing it from a small to medium size business machine distributor, to a
major player in the newly developing Point Of Sale market. Goodson quickly established itself as a
market leader in the supply of point of sale printers and cash drawers.
In 1994-5 Goodson was a significant part of the supply chain in a multi-million dollar fit out of
point of sale for The Australian Post Office. At this time Goodson became CBM's largest buyer in
the world. 1995 saw Goodsons appointed the Australian agents for Samsung Cash Registers. In
1996, because calculators were no longer the major product being imported, Goodson Calculators
Imports Pty. Ltd., name was changed to Goodson Imports Pty. Ltd., and the Goodson logo was
born. At that time Goodson Imports Pty. Ltd., started importing and marketing calculators, cash
drawers and cash registers under its own Goodson brand.
In 1998, Goodson commenced importing and distributing a range of barcode scanning equipment
from Welsh Allyn USA. 1999 again saw Goodson achieve the no 1 position as Japan CBM's largest
buyer in the world of point of sale printers and cash drawers. With the advent of GST in Australia
in 2000, the 1999-2000 financial year saw Goodson post a record 43% sales increase on the
previous year, achieving the largest sales in the company's history.
