What does it mean that Dollmasters is for collectors, by collectors? Dollmasters is
dedicated to an aesthetic of vintage childhood ephemera and to that end we carefully
Dollmasters, for collectors, by collectors.
There is no more prominent
contemporary doll-maker than
R. John Wright. The Vermont
native has been making dolls
for nearly three decades and
there is no modern doll artist
whose work holds value better
than R. John Wright's. His latest
line, The Flower Fairies, is
sure to continue that tradition.
Each of the Flower Fairies is
an entirely hand-made wool
felt doll, and each is a limited
edition of only 250 pieces.
The artistic touch must be in their genes, or maybe it's the result of their caring spirit. Whatever the
reason, a particular nostalgic charm emanates from the wonderful animal friends and dolls created
by the Monroe family of artists, including mom Jane Monroe now celebrating her 25th year of bearmaking,
son Jared, and lately joining the family artistic troupe, daughter Jessie Ross. Jane and Jared
From across the vast Pacific ocean,
Dollmasters presents a series of traditional
wooden Japanese play dolls known as Kokeshi.
The kokeshi doll tradition is centuries-old in
Japan. The carved wooden dolls seem initially
simplistic in design, but closer examination
reveals incredibly detailed carving such as
hair accents and ruffles in clothing. Most of
the Kokeshi dolls are produced from Japanese
dogwood trees, well known for their white
bark and fine grain. All carving and painting is
hand-done by experienced artisans.
Creating bears is a family affair for the Dutch teddy
bear artist, Marjan Jorritsma. Her studio is named for
her beloved brother, Tonni, and Marjan makes and
designs each and every animal by herself, excepting
the help of her husband, Reinder, and her mother. The
artist began her career with a doll shop into which a
teddy bear appeared one day, and then she realized
where lay her true passion. She hasn't turned back
since. Her bears and friends are limited in the
truest sense: she can only make as many as
she can find the material to create. For that
reason, each of her teddy bear and mouse
pincushions is different from the other.
When a naturally vibrant and animated
person as Berdine Creedy describes her
new line of dolls as "really exciting", you
just know that they really must be so. While
expression and costuming continue to be
the forefront of her designs, her work now
also shows a new direction in technical
details. Take, for example, her Magnekids
Series, a unique concept by which a doll
can be easily transformed from seated to
standing pose, as can her hair style and
color. Dollmasters is pleased to continue
to offer her stellar work.
If you grew up in the 1930s-1950s, you probably owned a
toy sewing machine. You probably sewed for your dolls. And
it's likely that you owned a "mannequin doll". It was a very
sensible idea. The limbs of the doll could be easily untwisted
for trying on a doll's costume – and then, twisted right back
on. Berdine Creedy has a new twist (no pun intended) on that
idea. MagneKids are made with a unique magnet that allows
their limbs to be changed easily. In fact, as easy as 1,2,click.
Each doll comes with blown glass eyes, two wigs and two
So dedicated is Peter Wolf, the German doll artist,
that he seldom leaves his studio except in search
of the rare antique silks and laces that he uses to
costume his dolls. The artist carves each of his
precious dolls entirely by hand, applies the earlystyle
enamel eyes, and then hand-paints in an
exacting antique manner. His specialty is the English
wooden doll of the 18th century known as "Queen
Anne", and his in-depth research ensures that each
is made exactly like the originals. With jointed hips
to allow each doll to bow in an appropriate courtly
manner, painted creamy complexions with dot
lashes, blush spots on cheeks and outlined lips, a
few even with beauty spots!
The Maryland artist began her career after seeing a
fine antique wooden doll that she couldn't acquire and
deciding "Well, I can make one just like that". But that
thought is where she separates from others with the
same idea. Because this woman is truly gifted. And her
artistic gift is coupled with a zealous desire to learn every
single detail about the history, background, costume and
social environment of the doll she will create. Honored
with awards from prestige societies in the wide art world
as well as the particular world of dolls, she mostly creates
her dolls for special commission. Dollmasters has
commissioned the artist to create two outstanding
examples that we offer here. Yes, certainly each
is one-of-a-kind.
In the 1779 painting by William Hoare that
hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, young
daughter Mary is portrayed showing her doll
to her father Christopher Anstey. It is this
doll that has been created by Susan Parris
in a fine wood that is entirely carved and
painted by the artist with unique glazes and
paints that she has developed. The doll has
brown hand-blown glass eyes, authenticallystyled
coiffure of the era and her costume is
hand-sewn using 18th century draping and
sewing techniques. Beneath her silk taffeta
French court gown is a matching petticoat
trimmed with ruched silk and vintage silver
wire, silk pannier, reed hoop, vintage lace
"Entirely made by me from the inside out" is how the Maryland self-taught artist and living historian describes
her work. It is a creed that she lives by. This doll, inspired by a painting of an anonymous woman, painter
unknown, circa 1740, represents a lady wearing elegant day wear of the era. The hand-sculpted and carved face,
hands and shoe lasts are attached to a wire armature within a soft linen body; she has black glass eyes and black
mohair wig. She wears a silk sacque with linen lining that is trimmed with recycled white mink and mohair to
simulate ermine. Although the underpinnings are not seen, the artist, true to her creed, spares no detail; the lady
wears canvas stays, white linen shirt and stockings, ivory antique wool petticoat with pink selvage, antique linen
stomacher, green silk pocket and ribbon garters. Because her gown is removable, you can display her as you wish.
Her silk slippers with leather soles, vintage pearl earrings, cotton and lace fichu and linen cap with Valenciennes
lace complete her costume. 13". OK-182. Was $3500. Now $2300. ♥
Ank i e Da a n e n
The Expression Dolls of Ankie Daanen
"A good doll stays in the memory". So says the
Dutch artist, Ankie Daanen, now making her grand
appearance in Dollmasters catalog.
It is true that her dolls stopped us in our tracks
when we spotted them at an exhibition. Beyond
admiring the artistic skill in their production, each
of us viewing the dolls brought our own experience
and emotions to the moment. To each of us the
dolls meant something different. And that is what
Ankie Daanen seeks to accomplish in her doll art.
She does it admirably.
The specifics of her doll-making are told by the
artist "Once I have sculpted the basic models of
my new dolls, I make the molds. After casting, I
sculpt them again. This means that each doll is a
unique and one-of-a-kind piece of art. I am also
inspired by my love of fabrics, lace and trims. I
use my imagination and fantasy when creating
a costume for the doll. Form, construction and
draping: I do it all myself."
Her artistic talents are evident. Her unique vision
is more difficult to define. That may explain why
"Dare to Dream" appeared on the May 2008
cover of Dolls Magazine and why the artist's work
continues to be the most sought-after throughout
the world. Each of these award-winning dolls is
The German firm of Steiff has long been an inspiration for
American artist R John Wright, and now that connection has
come full circle in a new series of felt dolls, the Steiff Kinder,
designed and created by R. John Wright under license by Steiff.
Though evoking the play dolls originally introduced by Steiff
at the beginning of the 20th century, each of the all-felt, fully
jointed dolls indelibly bears the classic R. John Wright "look". Each
has pressed-felt facial sculpt, painted features, inset glass eyes,
individually sewn fingers, and handmade mohair wig.
The talented American artist, Elizabeth Cooper,
lives in a small canal town in rural New York, in the
same house that her ancestors built six generations
ago. This environment has inspired her reverence
for things from the past, and her dolls, with their
uniquely-sculpted expressions and vintage costumes
reflect that reverence.
Each of her dolls are hand-sculpted of polymer clay
(no mold is used), each has tiny black matte eyes,
and each is hand-painted, dressed and wigged by
Elizabeth Cooper herself. Each doll is signed and
dated on the foot, and each has a signed paper
mache tag hidden on their back.
Friedericy artwork a masterpiece.
There is Alice with a wondering gaze. The
Queen and the Mad Hatter, of course. The
White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat. And all
of the other characters you adore. Each is
hand-sculpted porcelain, made one by one,
Each has a hand-dyed mohair wig, padded
armature body that allows posing and wax
the artist herself in fine silks and cottons with
richly embroidered details or hand-painted
accents. And while the wooden checkerboard,
is fixed in a block arrangement for better
The Wo o d e n Art Dolls o f Er i k a Cat e l l a n i
The Swiss artist continues her countrymen's tradition of hand-carved
wooden dolls. After all, the mountain maple is plentiful and long
winters allow ample time for the arduous carving. Combine the lightcolored
wood – which is the only wood she will use – with her artfully
sculpted and hand-painted faces and the result is a wooden doll of
uncharacteristic warmth. The costumes and wigs, too, are made
entirely by the artist.
Few dolls are made each year by
the French artist, Heloise, yet
each that is made is sculpted and
painted entirely by her hand, in
her own studio. The artist writes "I
believe a doll is a sculpture and the
model is hidden inside the clay."
Virginie is from an issue of only 35
dolls, her eyes of an indescribable
color – are they blue or are they
brown? – with an enhancing glaze
that makes them oh-so-real, and
her slender face so elegant and yet
so soft. Her hair is a wispy golden
brown, and her gown of tulle and
silk with embroidered flowers is
a dream. Signed and numbered
by the artist, Virginie will fulfill
the world of grown-up dreams. 19"
seated. SD-756. $2400. ♥
