Course outline<br />

This course will enhance the students’ professional career<br />

development, preparing them for advanced clinical practice<br />

with individuals, families, groups and communities.<br />

Nursing theory and research, as well as professional role<br />

development, are integral to this course which focuses on the<br />

development of the multiple roles of the clinical expert.<br />

Students will complete a specialist stream in child and<br />

adolescent health nursing, domiciliary nursing or general<br />

nursing. All streams focus on the development of leadership,<br />

critical thinking and clinical decision making. All streams<br />

also incorporate an individual health project which students<br />

will complete, during the master component of the course,<br />

under the guidance of one of <strong>Curtin</strong>’s experienced staff.<br />

Career outlook<br />

Fundamental to this course is the development of leadership,<br />

critical thinking and clinical decision making capacity,<br />

preparing health professionals for a leadership role at an<br />

executive level. The Domiciliary Nursing stream prepares<br />

registered nurses for a leadership role in domiciliary<br />

nursing and focuses on professional accountability and<br />

the development of competency at an advanced level in<br />

assessment and clinical judgement skills.<br />

Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia<br />

and at least one year of post-registration<br />

clinical experience. Applicants with a degree<br />

in a relevant field may be considered but will<br />

be required to undertake additional units<br />

to develop essential nursing knowledge<br />

and skills. Students must have successfully<br />

completed appropriate research units in<br />

their undergraduate degree.<br />

PgDip – A bachelor degree in nursing or<br />

This graduate entry masters degree course emphasises<br />

the close integration of evidence based theory and clinical<br />

practice. Students’ theoretical learning is supported by<br />

extensive clinical practice under the guidance of registered<br />

nurses.<br />

Career outlook<br />

Nurses remain in high demand globally and graduates find<br />

work throughout Australia and overseas. Upon graduation<br />

students can work as a beginning practitioner in a variety of<br />

healthcare contexts. The course has been designed to meet<br />

the accreditation requirements and competencies of the<br />

Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia to enable initial<br />

registration as a nurse. In order for students to be eligible<br />

for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of<br />

Australia as a registered nurse, they must complete this<br />

course within five years.<br />

Course outline<br />

This course has a broad scope for relevance and practicality,<br />

yet has a balance of generic and specific content. Students<br />

explore theoretical and clinical practice components<br />

of the role of nurse practitioners, and study advanced<br />

practice across a range of clinical applications. Their<br />

studies particularly focus on professional accountability,<br />

competency to practise, evidence-based practice, critical<br />

thinking, diagnostic reasoning, clinical decision making and<br />

the quality use of medicines.<br />

In the first and third semesters, students complete an<br />

internship (combined total of 300 hours), under the<br />

supervision of a nurse practitioner in a hospital or agency.<br />

The final semester is devoted to an individual health project<br />

under the guidance of <strong>Curtin</strong>’s experienced staff.<br />

Career outlook<br />

Graduates will be eligible to apply for endorsement as a<br />

nurse practitioner with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of<br />

Australia.<br />
