Applications of ultrasound include obstetric, musculoskeletal, vascular, abdominal and small part imaging. Medical ultrasound examinations are now requested more often as a medical test, and sonographers, who perform these examinations, are in high demand. There is an option to graduate with a postgraduate Diploma in Medical Sonography, which can be completed over two years on a part-time basis. Students have the opportunity to exit at this level. Career outlook A sonographer conducts dynamic diagnostic examinations with the use of high definition ultrasound imaging equipment covering a wide range of clinical areas such as obstetrics and gynaecology, abdominal, vascular, musculo-skeletal, paediatrics, breast and the superficial glands. My midwifery passion led me on a path of lifelong learning, of which Curtin played a major part. The Master of Science Nusing degree at Curtin provided me with my first taste of research, which today plays an important role in my position as Western Australia’s first Professor of Midwifery. This appointment leads the way in practice-based midwifery research and innovation. It guides research that responds to the priorities of the consumer, clinicans and academics with the ultimate goal of improving maternity care for West Australian families. Course outline This course leads to initial registration as a midwife. Students will be encouraged to engage in critical thinking, self-discovery, self-direction and life-long learning. Through a combination of theoretical and practical learning, students will learn to apply evidence-based knowledge and skills in midwifery to provide safe care to both the mother and her baby. Students study legislation and common law affecting midwifery practice and will be prepared to demonstrate the National Competency Standards for the Midwife. To complement theoretical learning, students complete clinical practice a maternity setting under the supervision of an experienced midwife at one of Curtin’s partner maternity hospitals for a minimum of two days per week for the first 12 months, then three days per week for the final six months. Continuity of care experiences with women will be an important component of this course. Theory units will be integrated with practice throughout the course.
