Course outline<br />

This course is designed to develop specialist practice with<br />

a focus on clinical leadership, promotion and integration<br />

of evidence-based nursing. It has specialist streams in<br />

critical care nursing (intensive care, coronary care, high<br />

dependency, paediatric intensive care) neonatal nursing,<br />

emergency nursing, acute care nursing, orthopaedic nursing,<br />

perianaesthesia nursing and perioperative nursing. The<br />

course emphasis is on developing graduates consistent with<br />

the profile of the specialist nurse.<br />

It is a collaborative program delivered in conjunction with<br />

clinical partners such as Royal Perth Hospital, Princess<br />

Margaret Hospital for Children and King Edward Memorial<br />

Hospital.<br />

Career outlook<br />

Many graduates achieve promotional positions in clinical<br />

fields such as clinical nurse and clinical nurse specialist.<br />

This course also provides the foundation for professional<br />

doctoral studies.<br />

Course outline<br />

This course is designed to develop specialist practice with the<br />

focus of delivering pharmacy-specific clinical services.<br />

It builds on the curriculum of the hospital pharmacy stream<br />

within the graduate diploma to provide students with<br />

an opportunity to undertake some research. Under the<br />

guidance of one of the School of Pharmacy’s experienced<br />

academic staff members, students will complete a project in<br />

clinical trials, drug utilisation reviews, drug usage studies,<br />

implementation of clinical pharmacy services or other related<br />

topic.<br />

Career outlook<br />

For pharmacists, this program can lead to careers in<br />

areas such as:<br />

• medication reviews and cognitive services<br />

• hospital pharmacy specialisation (many graduates can<br />

apply for promotion after completion of this course)<br />

• introduction of new cognitive services in<br />

community pharmacy<br />

• academia.<br />

This course does not qualify graduates for registration as a<br />

pharmacist in Australia.<br />

Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy<br />

The skills and knowledge that I gained while studying<br />

at <strong>Curtin</strong> are things that I use on a daily basis in my<br />

career. I developed amazing friendships during the time<br />

I studied at <strong>Curtin</strong>, and in fact many of these friends<br />

are now my colleagues.<br />

As a Clinical Pharmacist at St John of God Subiaco<br />

Hospital, I see patients at their bedside, counsel on<br />

medications, review medication charts and blood<br />

results and prepare discharge medication profiles. I<br />

work closely with other health professionals providing<br />

advice on medications and I am also involved in<br />

updating and reviewing medication related policies.<br />

For me, the best thing about being a pharmacist is<br />

the interaction that I have with patients and other<br />

healthcare professionals. No one day is ever the same<br />

and being a pharmacist allows me to have a positive<br />

effect on people’s health, which is a privilege.<br />

Course outline<br />

This is a dynamic course, based on contemporary best<br />

practice. It provides an opportunity for physiotherapists to<br />

develop their standard of practice both academically and<br />

clinically. The course focuses on integration of biomedical<br />

evidence and current concepts in clinical practice relevant to<br />

physiotherapy. Development of advanced clinical reasoning,<br />

diagnostic and treatment skills are promoted through<br />

interactive teaching, and supervised clinical practice. During<br />

this course, students undertake supervised research or<br />

project work relevant to their area of practice.<br />

Professionalism, clinical leadership and excellence in patient<br />

management are expected graduate attributes. Students can<br />

major in manipulative therapy and continence and women’s<br />

health.<br />
