CURTIN HEALTH INNOVATION RESEARCH
INSTITUTE (CHIRI)
Australia’s population is undergoing dramatic changes in
health, ageing and longevity patterns. While medical advances
have improved child and maternal health, and prolonged
our life spans, chronic illnesses associated with longevity,
lifestyle and the ageing process – diabetes, obesity, cancer and
cardiovascular disease – are increasing.
Traditional, reactionary healthcare models based on providing
acute, episodic care are no longer sufficient to deal with our
changing health needs, and infrastructure is crumbling under
a widespread lack of resources and funding.
Innovative, future-focused models of healthcare are required,
and Curtin, through the Faculty of Health Sciences, has
responded to this major national issue with the establishment
of the CHIRI.
CHIRI facilitates high-quality translational health research
focused on 10 broad programs of research. It brings together
over 140 researchers from more than 24 different health
professions, working in inter-disciplinary and
multi-disciplinary research groups across the Faculty’s
network of schools and centres, to develop high impact,
high-quality research.
These programs of research include;
• Biomolecular Interactions and Drug Discovery in Chronic
Conditions
• Healthy Environment and Behaviours
• Health Information and Genomics
• Human Movement and Rehabilitation
• Lifespan – Development and Ageing
• Metabolic Health
• Neuroscience and Mental Health
• Patheogenesis and Management of Disease
• Research into Teaching and Learning Towards Better Health
• Vulnerable Populations
It is engaged in developing practical solutions to global
health challenges, preparing students for leadership roles
in healthcare, and working with industry partners and
communities to advance health and wellbeing around the
world. Translational research is a key focus of CHIRI- taking
research from the bench-top to the bedside to better health.
CHIRI is about bringing people, knowledge and creative energy
together in an inspiring environment where working as a team,
constantly pushing the limits, will lead to greater success.
STATE-OF-THE-ART RESEARCH FACILITIES
Curtin University is committed to providing high-quality
facilities for its research students. It has recently invested
millions in state-of-the-art facilities including the Curtin
Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI) Biosciences
Research Precinct and Health Sciences Graduate
Research Hub.
The CHIRI Biosciences Research Precinct is a $35 million
investment uniting leading researchers and educators across
biomedical sciences, pharmacy and public health in a central
multidisciplinary research and teaching community.
The precinct is helping to drive the search for better methods
of preventing, diagnosing and treating a range of chronic
diseases – and reducing the impact of diseases that burden
populations worldwide.
It provides 24 specialised suites and laboratory space for more
than 100 scientists and research students.
One laboratory houses a live-cell confocal microscope – a
sophisticated instrument for the high-resolution imaging
of cells. A further $2 million worth of diagnostic equipment
for advanced gene, protein and cell analysis will help deliver
unprecedented capabilities to researchers.
CHIRI is about bringing people, knowledge
and creative energy together in an
inspiring environment where working as a
team, constantly pushing the limits, will
lead to greater success.

4 5
your study
options
Your decision to enrol in a coursework program,
a research program, or a program featuring
both modes of study, largely depends on what
you want to achieve and your study preferences.
Postgraduate programs are for students who
already have an undergraduate degree and
want to study further.
POSTGRADUATE STUDIES BY COURSEWORK
GRADUATE CERTIFICATE (GCert)
Graduate certificate courses are designed to develop advanced
knowledge and skills in a specialised area that may or may
not be directly related to your undergraduate degree. Some
graduate certificates are available for non-graduates and most
allow you to progress towards further postgraduate study.
All of the programs are career oriented, and usually take one
semester full-time or equivalent part-time.
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PgDip)
Emphasis in a postgraduate diploma is on developing
greater knowledge and skills through advanced studies of the
methods, theories and strategies to which you have already
been exposed at undergraduate level. You will maintain a
vocational emphasis through strong links with industry.
Completion of the postgraduate diploma usually takes two
semesters, and you may be offered Recognition of Prior
Learning (RPL) should you proceed to a masters degree.
GRADUATE ENTRY MASTER (M)
Graduate entry master courses provide a pathway for
students who already hold a bachelor degree to gain
an entry-level qualification in a profession. Graduate
entry masters are available in health information
management, nursing practice, occupational therapy,
pharmacy, physiotherapy and speech pathology.
In exceptional cases, applicants with a bachelor pass degree
may also be considered if they can demonstrate superior
academic achievement, significant work experience, and the
capacity to undertake significant research.
Research doctorates may sometimes be undertaken in a
mixed mode with one or two semesters completed in Perth
and the remainder in your home country if applicable.
This arrangement depends on your project and must be
negotiated with your supervisor.
MASTER BY RESEARCH AND DOCTOR OF
PHILOSOPHY DEGREES
At least two-thirds of work towards a master by research
degree must be pure research. The award indicates that you
have contributed significantly to your field and are capable of
carrying out independent research.
The following courses are currently available for
study by distance education or online:
• Child and Adolescent Health Nursing -
PgDip/GCert...................................................................15
• Diabetes - MSc/GDip/GCert.........................................18
• Environmental Health – PGDip....................................19
• Health Administration – M/PGDip..............................21
• Health Information Management – M........................21
• Health Promotion – M/PgDip/GCert..........................22
• International Health – M/GDip/GCert........................23
• Medical Sonography – M..............................................24
• Nursing – M/PgDip........................................................26
• Nurse Practitioner – M..................................................27
• Occupational Health and Safety – M/PgDip..............28
• Occupational Health and
Safety Management – GCert.......................................28
• Public Health – M/PgDip/GCert...................................33
GRADUATE DIPLOMA (GDip)
The graduate diploma is a specialised, vocationally oriented
award designed to develop knowledge and skills beyond
the level achieved in a graduate certificate. Entry is normally
based on completion of a bachelor degree or graduate
certificate, although this can be in an unrelated field if you
have work experience in the field of study. Less academically
qualified applicants may still apply. Graduate diplomas
are usually completed in two semesters full-time or
equivalent part-time.
MASTER DEGREE (M)
A masters degree provides you with specialised knowledge
and skills for research or advanced professional practice.
Entry is normally based on completion of a bachelor degree,
sometimes combined with relevant work experience, or
completion of a graduate diploma. Where appropriate,
provision may be made for you to undertake a bridging
course or other preliminary work as a requirement for entry
to a masters degree.
DOCTORAL DEGREES – COURSEWORK OR RESEARCH
A doctoral degree helps you develop systematic and critical
understanding of a complex area of learning or professional
practice. It usually requires at least three years of study.
Students with a master degree, or a bachelor degree with
first or upper second-class honours, may be considered
for admission.
Applications for master by research or PhD degrees must
include a written two-page research proposal outlining
the parameters and purpose of the research you wish to
undertake. Visit: research.curtin.edu.au/guides/ forms/
forms.cfm for more information and to download the
application form.
Although students may need to complete some coursework
units, the major part of the work will be in the form of a
thesis written under the guidance of a supervisor.
scholarships
scholarships.curtin.edu.au
Postgraduate courses attract fees. However,
there are a range of schemes and services to
help students with fees, including government
loan programs.
COMMONWEALTH SUPPORT PLACES (CSP)
Some postgraduate coursework programs may have
Commonwealth supported places available to students. This
means that students pay a proportion of the cost of their
course and the Government funds the balance. In previous
years this type of place was known as HECS – the Higher
Education Contribution Scheme.
FULL-FEE PLACES
Many postgraduate coursework programs only offer full-fee
places. Students in these courses pay the full tuition cost of
the course and must make payment upfront each semester.
For indicative course fees, refer online to: fees.curtin.edu.au
HIGHER EDUCATION LOAN PROGRAM (HELP) –
HECS-HELP AND FEE-HELP
HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP are loan programs (or discounts
for up-front payments) for eligible students studying at
public universities.
The HECS-HELP and FEE-HELP schemes provide interestfree,
income-contingent loan facilities for students. HECS-
HELP can be used for students who have a Commonwealth
supported place. FEE-HELP is available to students who have
a full-fee place.
Australian citizens, holders of a permanent humanitarian
visa, and holders of a permanent visa who are undertaking
a bridging study for overseas-trained professionals*, are
eligible for the schemes. A student can elect to pay a portion
of fees directly to the University and the remaining debt
will be registered as a loan through the Australian Tax
Office (ATO). Students will commence repaying any of their
HELP loan through the ATO once their income reaches the
minimum threshold for compulsory repayment. For more
information visit: goingtouni.gov.au.
For indicative course fees, refer online to:
fees.curtin.edu.au
There are a range of scholarships open to
students, which are detailed below.
COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Students in courses that include supervised practice (including
research) in a clinical setting are required to undergo screening
for, and vaccination against a range of infectious disease before
beginning their placement. For specific details relating to these
requirements go to: healthsciences.curtin.edu.au/current_
students/immunisation
CRIMINAL RECORD SCREENING
Applicants for a number of postgraduate courses should
be aware that many of these areas of employment require
practitioners to have a criminal record screening. Students
in these areas often undertake external placement, clinical
practice or practicum involving contact with the public
as a component of the course. External agencies, such as
government departments, non-government agencies and
hospitals, may require these students to obtain a criminal
record screening prior to an external placement, clinical
practice or practicum. Note that external agencies can vary
their requirements without notice and may not always advise
the universities of changes.
A criminal record many not necessarily preclude a
student from participating in an external placement,
clinical practice or practicum. However, serious crimes:
• of a violent or sexual nature
• where the victim was under 18 years of age or elderly
• for dealing or trafficking in drugs
• involving fraud, or
• any offence which resulted in a jail sentence
may render a person unsuitable for employment and/or
provision of services to clients.
Applicants should be aware that if they apply for a criminal
record screening this information may be placed on a
national database and made available to other authorities
(if it is of a sexual or child-related nature).
The University will issue further details on obtaining the
relevant criminal record screening to successful applicants
upon enrolment, or included with an offer of a student place.
Successful applicants should apply promptly for criminal
record screening as this application may take time to be
processed.
At this time the University is aware that a criminal record
screening is required from students enrolling in the following
fields of study:
• Child Adolescent Health
Nursing
• Clinical Classification
• Diabetes
• Dietetics
• Environmental Health
• Food Science and
Technology
• Health Information
Management
• Health Services
Management
• Health Promotion
• International Health
• Midwifery
• Nursing
• Nursing Practice
• Nurse Practitioner
• Occupational Health
and Safety
• Occupational Medicine
• Occupational Therapy
WORKING WITH CHILDREN CHECKS
The Working with Children (Criminal Record Checking) Act
2004 aims to protect children from harm by introducing
a high standard of compulsory national criminal record
Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy
The skills and knowledge that I gained while studying
at Curtin are things that I use on a daily basis in my
career. I developed amazing friendships during the time
I studied at Curtin, and in fact many of these friends
are now my colleagues.
As a Clinical Pharmacist at St John of God Subiaco
Hospital, I see patients at their bedside, counsel on
medications, review medication charts and blood
results and prepare discharge medication profiles. I
work closely with other health professionals providing
advice on medications and I am also involved in
updating and reviewing medication related policies.
For me, the best thing about being a pharmacist is
the interaction that I have with patients and other
healthcare professionals. No one day is ever the same
and being a pharmacist allows me to have a positive
effect on people’s health, which is a privilege.
Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics
Nutrition was the perfect fit for me as I am fascinated
by the human body, curious about food as a medicine
and a lover of food and cooking.
The Curtin Bachelor of Science (Nutrition) degree
provided a great foundation of knowledge, which
I built on with the Master of Dietetics. The study I
have undertaken at Curtin has satisfied my hunger
for all of these things and wet my appetite for the
art of working with people and opened my mind to a
scientific and enquiring way of looking at the world.
The School of Public health facilities and passionate,
friendly teaching faculty were the perfect recipe for
a solid foundation to enter the work force. I’ve had a
diverse career since graduating and now work as a
consultant dietitian, running my own business called
The Foodie.
Course outline
In this course students develop a range of theoretical
skills, practical knowledge, and techniques to manage and
Master of Health Promotion
I cannot begin to explain just how much I have learnt
from studying health promotion at Curtin and how
much this whole experience has changed my life.
Having the expertise, support and feedback from my
lecturers and tutors was fantastic.
Virtually everything I learnt in theory, I later
experienced in practice. Studying has also helped to me
really understand the people I work with so that now
it is much easier to accept them and how they react
and respond to health promotion strategies and the
process of change.
Postgraduate Diploma Nursing (Advanced
Specialisation – Midwifery)
Master Science Nursing
I have always been interested in women’s health issues
and was inspired by an international midwife working
in Canada to become a midwife myself. My midwifery
passion led me on a path of lifelong learning, of which
Curtin played a major part.
The Master of Science Nusing degree at Curtin provided
me with my first taste of research, which today plays
an important role in my position as Western Australia’s
first Professor of Midwifery. This appointment leads
the way in practice-based midwifery research and
innovation. It guides research that responds to the
priorities of the consumer, clinicans and academics
with the ultimate goal of improving maternity care for
West Australian families.
Course outline
This course leads to initial registration as a midwife.
Students will be encouraged to engage in critical thinking,
self-discovery, self-direction and life-long learning. Through
a combination of theoretical and practical learning, students
will learn to apply evidence-based knowledge and skills in
midwifery to provide safe care to both the mother and her
baby. Students study legislation and common law affecting
midwifery practice and will be prepared to demonstrate the
National Competency Standards for the Midwife.
To complement theoretical learning, students complete
clinical practice a maternity setting under the supervision of
an experienced midwife at one of Curtin’s partner maternity
hospitals for a minimum of two days per week for the
first 12 months, then three days per week for the final six
months. Continuity of care experiences with women will be
an important component of this course. Theory units will be
integrated with practice throughout the course.
Occupational Medicine M/PgDip
Course outline
The Master of Occupational Medicine and nested
postgraduate diploma complement the individual training
for Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational
and Environmental Medicine (AFOEM). AFOEM has developed
competencies and curricula for training and assessment
for Fellowship of the Faculty within the Royal Australasian
College of Physicians. The Master of Occupational Medicine
provides the academic support to the training program.
The course has been developed with input from practising
occupational physicians. The course units cover all of the
nine domains outlined by the AFOEM. It contains 15 units
of which 13 can be studied by distance education, with
unit materials and learning experiences available in online
mode. The two occupational medicine units are taught in
intensive block mode and include elicitation and analysis
of occupational and environmental history, assessment of
fitness for work, sickness absence, principles of management
and planning and evaluating health interventions to change
individual and workplace behaviour.
Career outlook
The industry prerequisite for practice as an occupational
physician is the Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of
Occupational and Environmental Medicine (FAFOEM), part
of which requires an external course of study related to
occupational medicine. Curtin’s Master of Occupational
Medicine will meet this requirement. The masters degree also
provides a higher qualification that allows the opportunity
for supervised research and evidence-based practice.
Engagement in research gives students an opening to
conduct and interpret investigations in relevant settings and
design, implement and evaluate prevention strategies.
Occupational Therapy GCert
Course outline
This course will provide the theoretical knowledge and
advanced practical skills required in changing health and
community contexts. Studies focus on emerging theoretical
knowledge of occupation, clinical reasoning as a basis for
reflective practice, management and evaluation skills, and
applied research.
Career outlook
Graduates using the title of registered health practitioner or
the title of occupational therapist (OT) must be registered
with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia (the
National Board). Registration for practice enables graduates,
once registered, to practise occupational therapy in all
Master of Occupational Therapy
The thought of going back to university was daunting
as I hadn’t studied for quite some time. Thankfully,
when I spoke to the great team at Curtin’s School
anxieties quickly disappeared.
The teaching and administration team have been
amazing in their support and guidance. The way they
have bent over backwards to help, encourage and just
plain cheer the students on is commendable. Words
cannot express the gratitude that I feel concerning their
enthusiasm and contribution to my success. Through
Sunila Peterson
Master of Counselling Psychology
I was strongly drawn to this degree because of the
opportunity to learn from high-calibre teaching staff.
I have been both grateful and inspired by the depth
and richness of content and practical knowledge that
teachers have brought to their sessions. This includes
their ability to communicate this knowledge in a
meaningful manner, their intuition in identifying the
learning gaps and guiding students to bridge these
gaps in a manner that provides empowerment and
independence, and the care they take in providing
honest, clear and balanced feedback. All this
helped me to improve and ultimately become an
excellent counsellor.
Psychology M
Course outline
This course provides students with advanced training
in either clinical or counselling psychology, through a
combination of coursework, practical placements and
research. There are two majors available: clinical psychology
and counselling psychology. The clinical psychology major
provides students with the knowledge, skills and experience
needed to practise as a clinical psychologist, and focuses on
understanding and applying contemporary evidence-based
practice in the assessment, treatment and prevention of
mental health problems. The counselling psychology major
prepares graduates in assessment, diagnosis, and evidencebased
psychotherapy for individuals, couples, families,
children and groups. Counselling psychologists work with
a wide range of mental health disorders and psychological
difficulties.
Career outlook
This course provides access to a wide variety of employment
opportunities. Graduates have obtained work in a
range of high profile government and non-government
counselling and mental health services. Many have attained
management or senior roles in these organisations. Other
graduates work in private practice where they are eligible
to claim rebates for their clients from Medicare and most
private health funds. Graduates are eligible to apply for
registration as psychologists with the Psychology Board
of Australia. Following two years of supervised practice,
graduates may be eligible to apply for membership of the
Australian Psychological Society’s (APS) College of Clinical
Psychology or Counselling Psychology, and endorsement by
the Psychology Board of Australia as a clinical psychologist
or counselling psychologist.
Nicole King
Master of Forensic Sexology
I had an interest in sexology and decided to undertake
a master degree as I wanted more understanding of the
criminological aspects of sexuality.
During my studies I was able to research a topic of
interest to me rather than having limitations such as
only being able to work on the public health aspect
of sexuality. I could combine health, criminology,
psychology and sociology to create a well-rounded
view necessary for understanding sexuality.
The face-to-face workshops undertaken as part of my
degree refined my skills and ability to discuss sexuality
openly and with an audience or individual. I was
exposed to concepts and points of view that helped me
to challenge my own ideas and attitudes, which greatly
assisted me in my professional development.
Above all else, having a Masters in Forensic Sexology
is an eye opener and it lets employees know that I can
work with sensitive and confidential issues.
Graduate Diploma Psychology,
Master of Speech Pathology
After completing my undergraduate degree at Curtin in
Education and Asian Languages, I aimed to undertake
postgraduate studies sometime in the future and
was told the opportunities at Curtin were really
varied. I have always had a passion for languages and
communication, but wanted to extend my knowledge
and skills outside of the office and classroom.
I found that this degree was structured to help you
succeed; the assessments, lectures and tutorials are all
integrated and I was able to grasp learnings and apply
new skills under the supervision of skilled tutors and
lecturers. One important point for my future career was
the fact that Curtin’s course was accredited.
I look forward to making tomorrow better, by providing
therapy to those children who are unable to see speech
pathologists for up to a year, due to waiting lists.
Literacy is a major issue amongst our youth, and early
intervention is key in making sure these children can
have a bright future with confidence.
Course outline
This graduate entry masters degree provides an entry
level qualification in speech pathology. It enables students
to develop an understanding of normal communication
development, developmental and acquired communication,
swallowing disorders, speech pathology clinical practice,
clinical measurement and research. Students primarily focus
on four areas: behavioural sciences, cognitive neuroscience,
rehabilitation science and speech science. Studies are
supported by extensive clinical practice.
Career outlook
This course is accredited by Speech Pathology Australia.
Graduates find employment in a range of public, not-forprofit
and private services throughout Australia.
program therefore, without additional study, does not lead to
registration with the sonography board. The course includes
the foundation units that are necessary to maximise
imaging capabilities. Students are required to complete
one unit in the area of clinical expertise, providing them
with the necessary theoretical understanding and clinical
