Basic Nordic Walking technique:
And this is how it’s done:
Nordic Walking is comparable to classic cross-country skiing, but with shorter sticks. The movement is
characterized by the proven diagonal technique, working the arms. The intensity of your training depends
on the active use of your sticks, which should always be positioned beneath the body’s center of gravity.
In the pressure phase the hand is closed, and most weight rests on the strap. Then – during the push phase –
the hand opens, while the pressure remains on the strap. At the end of the push phase, the hand is completely
open, and the tip of the stick still on the ground. The swing phase begins. The arm is brought forward, and so
past the body. The musculature is relatively relaxed. Only at the end of the phase does the hand begin to grip
again and the next pressure phase can then begin. The movement of the legs is in three phases. The heel is set
down. The movement rolls over the whole foot and there is strong downward pressure at the ball of the foot.
Stomach and seat muscles are tightened; the pelvis is pushed towards the spinal column. The upright posture
means there is less pressure on the discs.
