PRESIDENT’S COLUMN 

Hello everyone, 

It’s hunting season so this report will be 

short. I am off to the North Country to see if I 

can find some grouse to shoot at. The way I’ve 

been shooting lately they have a pretty good 

chance at survival. It’s also 

the time of year for all of us 

that have cabins to shut 

them down for the winter. 

That is really my main 

reason for going up north, 

and a hell of an excuse to 

hunt. 

All the nominations for 

the available offices and 

BOD seats are in. I wish everyone that is on the 

ballot success. However this year again we have 

an officer position that will have to be 

appointed at the January BOD meeting. The 

final results will be revealed at the December 

General Membership Meeting. 

Another reminder of all the shooting leagues 

that are starting in December---Sporting Clays, 

they shoot every other Sunday at 10 a.m. The 

winter Skeet and Trap league will be shooting 

on Tuesdays this year, with a tailgate party after 

the weekly shoot beginning December 3 rd . 

In December we have the kids Christmas 

party that will be held in the meeting room on 

the 8 th beginning at 1 p.m. after the “Country 

Breakfast”. 

Also on the schedule for December, 

beginning after the “Fish Fry’ on the 20 th we are 

going to replace the ceiling in the meeting room.

deer.

All the tickets for the Gun-a-Week drawing are out. Many 

have been sold. If you have some tickets that are not sold yet, 

please turn them to the bar as there is a waiting list for them. 

Good luck to all of those that are running for office and thank 

you for stepping up. 

Consider shooting one of our leagues Skeet & Trap starts 

December 3 through April 1. 

Flint league is every Wednesday, October 19 through 

December 18, except Thanksgiving. 

Fly Tying Workshops, first and third Thursdays, 7 to 10 PM 

October through March, in the old sporting clays building. 

Slingshot league Thursday nights, 7:30 in the meeting room 

October through April. 

Muzzleloader Winter Woods Walks, first Saturday of the 

month through April 5 th . 

Sporting Clays winter league starts December 1. 

It will be a long winter so why not come try out one or more 

of these leagues.

Well the December issue of the 

Multi-Laker will be my last article as 

Membership Secretary so I guess I should 

make these last two count. 

Election for club officers and directors is here and 

everyone that is eligible to vote should take the time to 

complete a ballot. 

I pointed out at the October Member meeting that 

we are down 39 members from last December. I am 

anticipating that this number will be lower after 

December New Member Meeting. Now would be a 

great chance to sponsor someone and help grow the 

membership. 

Remember everyone has the right to sponsor up to 

6 new members a year!

2013 has been a ruff financial year for us. 

Our last income statement shows we are 

$40,000 in the red in 2013. We do have 2 

months to fight back and hopefully our year 

end results will improve. 

We have a large club to take care of and our 

general overhead is very high, just to keep our doors 

open. 

In 2014 we need to do things differently. We need 

to work together and make some changes. One thing 

that would help is if every member brought in 1 new 

person in 2014. 

I challenge everyone to put together a list of 

ideas. Talk or don't talk with your MLCA friends, but 

we need to do something now and arguing 

or taking no action is not what is going to change the 

position MLCA is in today. 

A big hit in our fund raising is on the gambling 

side of our business and we may not be able to correct 

this completely, but we may need to reinvent MLCA 

to bring in other large fund raisers.

Chairmen’s Meeting Minutes – October 2 nd , 2013 

7:30 PM, VP Sam Mullins opened the meeting with the 

pledges. 

Motion: To approve the reserve dates. Glenn Kruckenberg/ 

Ron Dubois. Motion carried.

VP's Report: 

Sam told the chairman of the following events happening 

around the club: 

Haunted Forest is October 17, 18 th , 19th, 24th, 25th and 

26th. He also said that John Brandt, the chairman is looking 

for help. If you can help John with Haunted Forest give him a 

call at 248-366-7940. 

He also said there is now a waiting list for the gun a week 

tickets. If you have any left please return them to the club as 

there is a waiting list for them. 

Also in October, Texas Hold'em will be taking place at 

Northville Downs, the dates are October 17, 18th and 19th 

volunteers also needed for this event. Please call Glenn 

Kruckenberg at 313-407-6724. 

We have a new special raffle for a Henry .30/30 lever 

action special NRA engraved limited edition Golden boy. 

Tickets are $20 and only 200 are available. 

Sam mentioned that October is Can-Do month. Please 

bring a can of food to the bar and put in the Can-Do bin. 

Sam also stated, we are waiting on the license for the 

spring bear hunt raffle tickets. 

Our annual kids Halloween party will be held Saturday, 

October 26, from 6 to 9 PM. 

He also said that the friends of the NRA dinner went really 

well. 

Sam also mentioned the casino trip raffle tickets are still 

available. 

Our next Work Bee is October 20.

Operations Manager Report: 

Dave Fisher asked the chairman to get their expenses and 

budgets in as soon as possible. 

Dave went on to say that every chairman should sponsor 

a new member every year If everyone sponsored a member 

each year it would sure help out the bottom line. 

They have also starting inventory for beverages. 

Old Business: 

Eric Manning spoke about the nominations. He asked if 

you would consider running for office. Please submit your 

application before the October general membership meeting. 

He also looked into when was the last time we raised the 

costs for the ads in the Multi-Laker. He said it has not been 

raised in seven years and we should consider raising those. 

He also went on to ask where we are advertising for 

Haunted Forest. 

Cal Kittinger informed the chairman that grants are now 

due for the NRA. He also stated that Dr. Johnson would 

assist you if needed. 

New Business: 

Sam Mullins informed the chairman that we need the type of 

system that we use for Good Old Days with tickets, for 

workers of the haunted forest. 

Skip Cohorst told the chairman that Sight In Days starts on 

October 25 th . 

The kids Halloween party is October 26 th , from 6 to 9 PM 

in the main clubhouse. Please bring a can for Can-Do. 

Sam reminded the chairman that the next chair meeting 

will be December 4 th , the next Work Bee is October 20 th , and 

the November Board Meeting is October 23 rd .

shotgun for the first time in October of 2011. A 

short twenty one months later, this photo and 

Becky's comment (below) say it all. 

Becky joined MLCA 3 months after taking 

part in our Women On Target program.

and my ATA trophy from the Great Lakes 

Grand 2013. 

On July 6 th 2013, I won Event 19 Remington 

Nitro Handicap with a score of 98, with my first 

50 straight. 

As I mentioned to you, this was only made 

possible by my introduction to trap shooting at 

Multi-Lakes through the WOT program 

sponsored by the NRA. 

I feel this is an invaluable program to women

~ Hunt Photos ~ 

Bears were hitting my three baits from day one - all 

nocturnal. They would come at all hours of the night. 

In the beginning days they were coming in at late 

hours, but as the days progressed they started to come 

in earlier. The last three days I was missing the bears 

by 8 to 15 minutes. 

Sat night I didn't hunt - I was at the Ontonagon County Sportsman's Club Annual Banquet. So I had one 

day left - the 13th day of October. I got there at 4:00 PM and waited. A doe came out to feed on some corn 

and left about 15 minutes later. I knew the wind was in my favor. The weather cooled down to 61 degrees and 

was going to drop to 31 degrees. 

It was starting to get dark so I began to 

pack up to leave when my Infra-Red light lit 

up on my camera. I looked up and there he 

was broadside at 50 yards. I chambered a 

.338 shell in my browning rifle and slowly 

dropped the cross hairs behind his shoulder, 

took a deep breath and squeezed the trigger. 

I felt good about the shot. He disappeared 

and I waited for about fifteen minutes. 

Hearing nothing, I decided to go home and 

go after him in the morning. 

The next morning I got to the spot I last 

saw him and looked for blood. Finding it, I 

new I had a hit. Looking around in the 

direction he took off, I saw a huge black 

pile about 30 yards into the woods. What a 

relief - my shoulders dropped and I became 

happy, Happy, HAPPY! 

I had no less than three different bears 

coming in at this one bait sight. One night 

a sow bear with her three cubs came in. 

The bear I got wasn't the bear that I was 

after - that is one that is 8 inches taller with 

white areas on his rump and neck…

Board of Directors Meeting Minutes – October 9 th , 2013 

Chairman of the Board Matt Philippart called the meeting to 

order at 7:30pm. Matt led the Board in the Pledge of 

Allegiance and the Conservation Pledge. 

Officers present: Charley Stevens, Sam Mullins, Mark

PEOPLE TO SEE THE BOARD: 

Even Lacy: Wanted to be heard about how things going with 

equipment maintenance and grounds. Many times the 

grounds guys come out and equipment is not working. As we 

know we having ageing equipment and it needs to be treaded 

gently. We need to come up with a plan on what equipment is 

used for what and who can use it. Use the right piece of 

equipment for the right job. 

Dan Vanstone: Country breakfast wants to raise prices. 

Keith Zerwas/ Glenn Kruckenberg: to raise price of country 

breakfast $2 for each category regular, junior and senior take 

effect in December. Discussion followed. For: Charley

Charley thanked Rich Carlson for the Veterans Memorial 

dedication. Shotgun leagues start December 3 rd . The

opens up on the 20 th in zone 3 and I got a email from the 

DNR about new opportunities if anyone would like a copy, I 

can email it. The bar reports thru the grapevine about rowdy 

and unruly behavior. We are all equals and should be treated 

as such. Reminder that the November board meeting is held 

on October 23 rd .

OPERATIONS MANAGER'S REPORT: 

Dave is in the process of putting all beverages in inventory on 

the computer. Exact number and names of product has to be 

recorded for work bees or anything that goes out and comes 

back. We are in need of help in the ticket booth for Haunted 

Forest. Dave and Barry came up with idea of having an 

increase of $50 for nonmember’s rentals and use that to hire 

someone to watch security of those events. Tara needs help 

on Thursday nights for Sling Shot. MUCC is looking for a 

place to drop off hides for MUCC defend the hunt. Dave will 

check into what it takes to do this.

General Membership Meeting Minutes – October 16 th , 2013 

President Charley Stevens called the meeting to order at 8:00 

PM. Charley led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance and 

the Conservation Pledge. Charley then welcomed all the new 

members and acknowledged the past Presidents in

The shotgun leagues will start on December 3 rd , which is a 

Tuesday and will run thru April 2014, cost $125 for members 

and $150 for nonmembers. October is Can-Do month please 

give the gift of food to the needy. Bingo is still in need of help.

Mark Geiger - Gave the recap of the members: We have 122 

regular members, 350 working members, 75 probationary

TREASUER’S REPORT: 

Charley Stevens: – Charley Stevens talked about the 

September Treasure’s report. Charley Stevens said to date 

we have spent $40,000 more then we have taken in for 

revenue in 2013. This loss has come out of our savings and 

we hope to come up with new ideas to put money back into 

our accounts. 

OPERATIONS MANAGER REPORT: 

Haunted Forest is in need of some help in the ticket booth. 

Please call your senator to stop House Bill HB4960. 

EARLY DRAW: 

#648: Tom Shefferly’s name was drawn; Tom missed out on 

$300.00 plus $25 if he had his name tag on. Next month the 

amount will increase to $310, plus $25.00 if you have on your 

name tag. 

VICE PRESIDENT REPORT: 

Sam Mullins announced there are 144 members present, 18 

new members, 21 guests. 

We have tickets on sale for the .30/30 NRA Rifle Raffle, 

$20 each. 

CHAIRPERSONS TO SPEAK: 

Jon Penuse/Greg Matherson: Junior shotgun shoots on the 

first second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Come out 

and witch the kids. 

Jon Miller: December 1 st starts the Pin Top Shoot and it’s 

every other week. If you can get any bowling pins we can

use some. MUCC’s Defend The Hunt would like the club to 

be a drop off spot for deer hides. 

Skip Cohorst: Halloween party is October 26 th . November 6 th 

is going to be spouse’s night. And December 18 th is the kids 

Christmas party. 

Annie Barbara: We had Three Women on Target clinics, and 

142 shooters came out and had a lot of fun. 

Rich Carlson: I would like to acknowledge committee 

members Larry Hutton, Glenn Kruckenberg, Andy Lynch, 

Harvey Cooper, Mickey McCanham and Richard and Mike 

LaFave. Our Boy Scout Troop did a wonderful job escorting 

Mrs. Debbie Ellsworth to lay a wreath at the base of the 

monument. I wanted to say a few words about Rich LaFave. 

He was instrumental in pulling this project off. From planning, 

to organizing, to final touches - this would not have been a 

success with his efforts.

some donations. 

Chris Peltier: I’m in need of some help at Bingo every 

Tuesday, and the fourth Tuesday of the month I need some
