ISTT makes a mark in Medellin
In August 2012 the city of Medellin, Colombia, received two notable visitors from the ISTT – Chairman
Dr Samuel Ariaratnam and Executive Director John Hemphill – who were assessing the city as a host
for the No-Dig 2017 event.
The main purpose of the visit was to view
the city and assess the possible host candidacy
of Medellin for the International No-Dig 2017.
For this purpose, the Medellin Convention
Bureau and Proexport offices invited the ISTT
executives to inspect the possible facilities
and general infrastructure of the city in order
to make an assessment on its potential for
hosting an International No-Dig event.
The ISTT executives visited the Plaza
Mayor Convention Center, the Northern
Interceptor Project, a microtunnelling project
currently under construction, and diverse
hotels and touristic centres in the city.
Upcoming Events
They also had meetings with Empresas
Publicas de Medellin (EPM) staff. EPM
has been a Colombian Institute for
Subterranean Infrastructure Technologies
and Techniques (CISTT) platinum
sponsor since 2009. CISTT Chairman
Luis Maldonado also participated in this
meeting, along with CISTT Executive
Director Arlex Toro and CISTT International
Representative Juan Carlos Gutierrez,
among others.
One of the last meetings of the visit
was with representatives from the School
of Engineering of Antioquia and EAFIT
University. The university representatives
asked the visitors about information and
ideas for participating in trenchless and
underground infrastructure events and
education.
CISTT gives special thanks to Daniela
Maturana and Paola Piza, Medellin
Convention Bureau executives, for assisting
and hosting the important ISTT visitors. The
Medellin Convention Bureau, PROEXPORT,
ICTIS, and EPM, will be attending the ISTT
No-Dig São Paulo 2012, and the No-Dig
Sydney 2013 to promote the candidacy of
Medellin for the 2017 International No Dig.
Trenchless Asia a hit
Trenchless Asia 2012 was held in Singapore from 2–4 July 2012, in conjunction with Singapore
International Water Week, drawing impressive attendance numbers from over 104 countries.
The conference program was
organised by immediate Past Chairman
of the ISTT Dec Downey. The program
featured presentations on a number of new
technologies, as well as many case studies
to illustrate the challenges and solutions of
trenchless works around the world.
The conference was opened by Professor
Sam Ariaratnam, Chairman of the ISTT.
Keynote presentations followed by Tan Yok
Gin, Assistant Chief Executive (Operations)
of Singapore’s Public Utilities Board and
Mohammed Akhir Mohd Jiwa, Director General
Sewerage Services, Ministry of Energy, Green
Technology and Water, Malaysia.
The Trenchless Asia exhibition featured
more than 50 companies from ten countries
and included country pavilions from
Singapore and Germany. Platinum sponsor
of the event was Vermeer Asia Pacific and
Gold Sponsor was Digital Control Inc (DCI).
The combined attendance was recorded at
more than 18,500 visitors from 104 countries.
Show Director Paul Harwood said “The
decision to hold Trenchless Asia alongside
Singapore International Water Week proved
to be extremely successful, with exhibitors
reporting excellent enquiries from visitors
looking for trenchless solutions.
“The core attendance of visitors who
signed up to attend Trenchless Asia
was supplemented by a high number of
attendees who crossed over from SIWW
exhibition, thus expanding the visitor
profile to include an influential audience
of international water industry experts and
policy makers from around the world.”

Pemberton attended the event with
Australasian Society for Trenchless
Technology (ASTT) Chairman Trevor
Gosatti and Secretary Jeff Pace. At the
event, the ASTT representatives with ISTT
Executive Director John Hemphill signed
the event contract for the 31 st International
No-Dig 2013, Sydney.
The ASTT also met with Affiliated
Societies at Trenchless Asia to discuss
what will be on offer at No-Dig Down
Under 2013.

ISTT Trenchless
Masterclass tours in 2013
Following the success of the first ISTT No-Dig Summit, which was held in Bangalore in May 2012,
ISTT has announced a program of events to be held in 2013.
The objectives of the Summits are
to promote the wider use of Trenchless
Technology and to assist the international
community with educational and interactive
forums. The focus of each Summit is the
ISTT Trenchless Masterclass - a program
of presentations from international experts
Samuel Ariaratnam and Dec Downey. The
papers will present in-depth knowledge
on many aspects of trenchless installation
and repairs. Case study presentations to
complement the Masterclass topics will also
be included in the program.
