North Shore cables get an upgrade ISTT No-Dig 2013 – save the date! The ISTT heads to Sydney, Australia, 1–4 September 2013. See page 36. With the easily assembled BLS/VRS-T system, pipe-by-pipe assembly proved to be an advantage in this case, and even in cramped conditions the angle of entry required was easy to set and still allowed high installation rates to be achieved. The existing 33,000 volt cables and wires were installed in the 1960s to connect the Crows Nest zone substation to a major supply point in Artarmon. Horizontal directional drilling specialists recently finished drilling two 600 mm-wide tunnels under the North Shore rail line in Artarmon as part of the ten month replacement project. The 150 m long tunnels between Ella Street and Naremburn Park in Artarmon will hold conduit pipes to carry six new 132,000 volt cables. Ausgrid General Manager Transmission Brett Hooper said the next stage of work included pulling the new 132,000 volt cables through the conduits. “The existing cables have served the North Shore community well for half a century and are now approaching the time for replacement,” Mr Hooper said. “Substation technicians are also installing equipment in the recently completed new substation building adjoining the existing substation built in the 1930s. “The replacement of ageing electrical infrastructure across the North Shore will help meet the electricity needs of the area.” Temporary road surfaces along the cable route will be permanently restored once all work on the project is complete. CIPP October 2012 - Trenchless International 28 Saskatoon reaps the rewards of resin relining IVIS, located in Alberta, is a company pioneering new developments in underground infrastructure solutions and pipe rehabilitation. IVIS recently embarked on a new project in Saskatchewan that placed the company at the forefront of the western Canadian relining industry. The project was initiated because the City of Saskatoon’s potable water line had experienced major failures, and was becoming an on-going issue for residents. It was evident the water line was in need of repairs, and the City decided cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) relining was an effective and lowcost solution. The non-invasive technique was selected because it would minimise disruption to residents. Additionally, because CIPP minimises the amount of excavation a repair jobsite requires, worksite hazards for installation crews are greatly reduced. Size matters The project required relining approximately 3,500 m of different sized pipes in the city of Saskatoon, using CIPP technology. This included the use of epoxy resin and NordiTude liners. The most challenging part of the project was the distance between the wet-out shop and the project site. Resin-filled liner has a limited shelf-life; to avoid liner failure on-site crews had to work efficiently and complete all preliminary work before the liner arrived at the project site. Another issue the project faced was the small services, which ranged in size from three-quarters of an inch to one inch. Locating these service holes and reopening the connection in such a small pipe requires superior skill that few companies possess. Because of the immense size and challenging nature of this project, IVIS crews and management came together to develop an innovative solution. About IVIS The City of Saskatoon project expanded IVIS into new markets. New production strategies such as Just-In-Time and reorganising the work system helped IVIS expand its relining capabilities. IVIS is a growing company that is expanding its services throughout western Canada, utilising new technologies in underground infrastructure.
