Improvements in the
pipeline for Shapinsay
Scottish Water Solutions has constructed what is believed to be one of the longest water supply
subsea pipelines in the UK in order to bring cleaner, fresher water to the small island of Shapinsay
in Orkney, Scotland.
The £3.1 million Scottish Water Solutions
project has seen the directional drilling of a
300 mm diameter hole under the seabed over
a distance of 2 km. A new watermain has
been pulled through the length of the bore,
new mains are installed and a new pumping
station has been constructed in Carness.
The purpose of the project is to install a pipe
under the seabed to bring water to the island
of Shapinsay, connecting the community to a
reservoir on the Orkney mainland.
Drilling to the island
George Leslie was the principal contractor
for the project, with Stockton Drilling employed
as its specialist drilling subcontractor.
Stockton Drilling completed the 2 km
drill between the islands of Orkney and
Shapinsay.
To enable this Stockton Drilling installed a
180 mm diameter HPPE conduit pipe from
mainland Orkney to Shapinsay Island using
Stockton’s 250 tonne HDD rig to complete
the 2 km drill.
The Carness mains will connect into
the existing distribution system and the
Shapinsay main will connect to the existing
service reservoir.
The subsea pipeline spans from Carness
Point on the outskirts of Kirkwall and ends at
Balfour Castle grounds on Shapinsay.
Construction Manger Malcolm Miller said
“We are really pleased to have completed the
subsea drilling part of this project as it was
such a complex and specialised process.
“The results have been successful and
we are now well on the way to completing
the project over the rest of the year and
bringing fresher, clearer water to customers
in Shapinsay.”
Looking ahead
A spokesperson for the project told
Trenchless International that contractors have
now completed all new water distribution
pipework connecting to the directional drill
section under the sea, both on the island of
Shapinsay and the mainland of Orkney.
The pumping station that will pump the
new supply to Shapinsay is now under
construction and project completion is
scheduled for early 2013.
HDD rig set up on-site.
Pipe ready to be pulled through.
