The Almeida Theatre’s Creative Learning
Programme for Young People
September 2010 - August 2011

WELCOME!
The following pages summarise the activity
that has taken place between September
2010 and August 2011. It has been an
incredibly busy and exciting year for us –
with lots of activity for both school groups
and for Young Friends.
Almeida Projects provides an active, creative link between our theatre
and its audience, more specifically an audience that may not have
considered that the theatre might be for them. This is not simply to
ensure an audience for the future; it is to establish the right of every
individual to self-expression, to the belief that they possess creative
potential, that theatre is a populist, collaborative art form as available
to them as to everybody else.
Whether any young person working with us goes on to become a
professional writer, actor, director, designer, administrator or technician
is of secondary interest. Our aim is to act as a catalyst to their energies,
to their hunger to participate – celebrating the creativity of young
people in the best way we know how: by offering them our experience,
our expertise and our unique theatre.
Michael Attenborough
Artistic Director, Almeida Theatre
Our work with and for schools was as strong as ever
this year. Particular highlights were Crawling in the
Dark by Natalie Mitchell – a new play commissioned
specifically for young people that saw 954 young
theatregoers coming through the Almeida’s doors,
and being totally enthralled by the action on stage;
and the Becky Shaw Residencies with seven classes
from five schools who came together to share their
work on the Almeida stage in March.
The Young Friend of the Almeida scheme has also
grown in strength and further embedded itself into
the ethos of the organisation. Particular highlights of
this year’s activity were ScriptLAB and the One Act
Play Festival, where eight writers produced eight new
plays that other Young Friends then performed at
the theatre; and the Young Friends Festival, curated
by the YFA Creative Board, which included
workshops and performances for and by Young
Friends.
July 2011 also marked the culmination of the third
year of the Trainee Workshop Leader Programme – it
has really grown in strength and reputation since its
inception in 2008, and we are delighted that we will
be working in partnership with Central School of
Speech and Drama to deliver the scheme in 2011-12.
We wish all of the 10-11 trainees every success in
their future careers and look forward to working with
the 2011-12 cohort.
It really has been a fantastic year, and we are
delighted to have almost achieved our fundraising
target to enable this vital and hugely worthwhile
work to continue through 2011/12.
We would like to thank all partners, funders and staff
who have supported this work over the last year –
and we look forward to working with you again.
Creative Learning Facts and Figures 2010 – 2011
Overall, Almeida Projects worked with
• 2,550 individuals
• Providing 10,444 opportunities for these individuals
Subsidised Ticket Scheme
This scheme provided 56 different schools and 1555 students with a unique and wellsupported
theatre-going experience.
Students received a top price ticket to the show, at a hugely discounted rate; participated in an
introductory workshop (timetabled at a convenient time for the school, pre-show); received a host for
the evening; were given free copies of the programme; and were given access to Almeida Projects
Resource Packs with specific information and contextual articles relating to the production to support
further learning in the classroom.
Schools and Colleges
Specifically, Almeida Projects worked with
• 63 schools (8 partner schools; 17 local borough schools and 38 other schools)
• 2038 school students (500 of these on durational residency projects)
• Providing 7199 opportunities for these students
• 216 active Young Friends of the Almeida (although there were 418 registered members)
• Providing 2926 opportunities for these Young Friends
• 98 freelance artists (providing 1427 employment opportunities for these artists)
• 198 opportunities for teachers to engage with the Almeida’s programme of work
‘Thank you for the excellent introductory
workshop... The students absolutely loved it
and it has really whetted their appetite for
tomorrow's performance. You are doing really
excellent work...outside London it can be
difficult to access cultural activities like this.
Teacher, Cedars Upper School, Bedfordshire
Teachers Evenings
198 teachers attended 5 Teachers’ Evenings, providing an opportunity for local performing arts teachers
and representatives from selected arts and community organisations to come together, see the show and
assess its suitability for their students, meet the Projects team, and each other, and find out more about
Almeida Projects activities.
‘I wanted to get in touch to thank you for a brilliant evening... As a new teacher at
The City Academy this was the first such event I have attended and I was astounded
by your hospitality. It was a real privilege to have been invited to watch the show and
fascinating to listen to [director] Travis Preston speaking about his work... I would love
to attend future Teachers’ Evenings and applaud the work that you are doing to open
up the Almeida’s programme to local arts teachers.’
Spin-off Production
CRAWLING
IN THE DARK
A new play for young people aged 13+
Five performances: Tuesday 5 April - Friday 8 April 2011
by Natalie Mitchell
The Almeida does not currently programme work as part of its main programme with a young audience
in mind. However, the theatre firmly believes in the importance and necessity of creating high quality,
accessible work for a young audience and has developed a formula for doing this - and programming it
at a time that is suitable for school audiences. Crawling in the Dark was written in response to The Knot
of the Heart by David Eldridge, to allow young people to access the play’s issues and themes in an
appropriate and age-relevant context, placing the experience of young people at the heart of the story.
Young people also consulted with the writer on the script and took part in early development workshops.
‘My favourite part of the project was seeing the
energy and talent in the final performance and
seeing it all come together in such a short
space of time.’
Student
Schools and Colleges
Crawling in the Dark was a frank coming-of-age story that featured two siblings at crucial points of
change in their personal and academic life, whose mother was a drug addict. In looking at how young
people can become victims of substance misuse, the play focused on the issues of family, responsibility
and choice.
Tickets for the show were offered to schools for £5 each, or £3 to all local borough schools. Almeida
Projects worked with eight lawyers from Pinsent Masons to produce a comprehensive Resource Pack
which included extensive practical exercises for use in the classroom, as well as detailed context relating
to the law and responsibility around drugs and family.
954 audience members attended; 682 of these were school bookings.
‘...how much the Year 9s enjoyed and
appreciated the performance (so did I!). It
really ‘grabbed’ them and held their attention
and interest throughout – all so believable and
close to home for some.’
Judy Gemmell, Islington Arts & Media School
‘A great session, it’s really
starting to look slick!’
Teacher
‘Amazing. Never before
have I cried for a live
performance. Truly
moving. I would definitely
watch it again. 10/10’
Equilibrium!
City and Islington College
June 2011
Almeida Projects worked with three groups of City and Islington students for eight hours each, to
explore and develop a physical language to explore the concept of balance – specifically the loss of
balance that has been precariously maintained by Agnes, the central female character in A Delicate
Balance – and what it means to them as young people. They presented their final piece on the Almeida
Theatre stage in June.
September to December 2010
Taking the themes of youth and ambition as a starting point - as young people, what do we dream
about and why? And how do we go about achieving our goals? - The Master Builder Residencies
encouraged students to explore their aspirations, as young people, with their whole lives ahead of them,
and devised short performances based on this exploration. At its heart, the residency aimed to engage
students creatively with the concept of ambition, particularly in an X-Factor age, where, arguably, young
people are offered an unrealistic view of the path to success and fame: when you have your heart set on
something, what lengths will you go to make it a reality? Or if it seems unachievable, will you just give
up?
Focusing on the theme of being a victim of crime, specifically on how individuals respond to incidents
and deal with them, participants devised response pieces to the Almeida’s production of Gina
Gionfriddo's Becky Shaw. Participants came for a tour of the theatre, saw an abridged matinee of the
show, and took part in devising workshops in their schools. Each group involved had a specific focus for
their response piece that contributed to a whole day of shared presentations, with other schools, at the
‘This was a fantastic opportunity to understand the demands
on the actor – rehearsal process, technical, focus and class
dynamics. Linking the activities together with a common song
was great idea, well-pitched, and added to the energy of the
piece. Seeing each others’ work was also wonderful and
helped students to gauge their own abilities well.’
September 2010 to July 2011
Into the Almeida was a series of bespoke workshops that introduced both students and teachers to the
key elements of theatre practice, drawing on themes from Almeida Theatre plays. Workshops were
tailored to the needs of the schools and supported curriculum learning. Workshops included:
performing onstage; voice; devising and responding to stimuli; physical theatre and movement in
performance; directing; theatre tours and practitioners.
The team brought new and dynamic ideas and presented
them in a professional and dramatic manner which added
to the educational take of the school … The vast majority
as being extended and stretched by the team – which is
THE YOUNG FRIENDS FESTIVAL
Curated by Young Friends inspired by the Almeida Festival 2011
July 2011
Building on the success of our annual LAB production for young people, this year's Almeida Festival
included a spin-off Young Friends Festival. Taking inspiration from the Almeida's productions
throughout the year, and working with Festival artists, the Young Friends Creative Board curated,
hosted and performed a variety of events for young audiences.
The Rashomon Effect
Written and performed by Young Friends in collaboration with Greyscale
July 2011
A group of nine writers and nine actors worked together over several weeks with Co-artistic director of
Greyscale, Selma Dimitrijevic, in order to create a multi-voiced story of intrigue and deception. Closely
echoing the creative process followed by Greyscale, each of the young writers provided a voice for one
of the actors, and as a team they created a story for and with their audiences.
Young Friends of the Almeida
173 people saw The Rashomon Effect.
‘It was completely different to
anything I’ve ever done beforein
a good way!’’
and then create a character starting from
how they walk!’
The Young Friend Festival
October 2010 - July 2011
ENCOURAGE
THE
OTHERS
Between October 2010 and April 2011, 14 Young Friends met fortnightly to explore each play in the
Almeida Theatre’s 10-11 Season through practical workshops. These workshops generated ideas and
material for the playwright, John Donnelly, who then wrote a brand new play, Encourage the Others, for
the group.
In May, they moved into bi-weekly rehearsals with director Lu Kemp, who guided the group into
production as part of the Almeida Festival in July 2011.
The company of performers were supported throughout the year by five peer mentors, who had
previously participated in the project. In addition, ten Young Friends worked alongside the Almeida
Theatre’s marketing department to devise a marketing strategy for the production, including filming
and editing their own trailer.
Fourteen other Young Friends undertook facilitation training, before delivering introductory workshops
relating to the play in a number of community settings around Islington as part of the Platform
Festival.
‘It was the best experience
of my life.’
Young Friend
‘Throughout this project we
were told we would be treated
like professionals and I felt
that…I felt absolutely
delighted.’
Young Friend
‘We’ve all bonded so
much…now I have a
LAB family.’
Audience Member
‘A truly ambitious, intelligent, challenging, darkly comic piece that was
beautifully written, superbly directed and expertly performed. I was
stunned by the participant's performances. They handled the complex
material with such incredible confidence, knowing and subtlety.’
Audience Member
‘I am so grateful I have been able to build a
MiniLABs
Term-long projects where Young Friends of the Almeida met weekly to work towards a final
performance.
YFA ScriptLAB and the One-Act Play Festival
Over nine weeks, thirteen Young Friends worked alongside a writer and dramaturg to develop first drafts of
one act plays. Eight of these plays were then cast and rehearsed with other Young Friends, working
alongside two professional directors. These were performed at the Almeida Theatre to an audience of over
100 friends and family.
13 writers / 15 performers / 1 stage manager / watched by over 100 audience members
‘I learnt the technical parts to scriptwriting and
really got to work closely with professionals.’
Young Friend
‘We got to enjoy the full
performance process
from the roots’
Young Friend
‘I hoped it would be fun and
worthwhile which is what it really was.’
Young Friend
MiniLAB: The Hotel
September to November 2010
The Autumn MiniLAB introduced participants to a new way of creating theatre, by placing equal importance
on the stories you tell physically, without words. Working with a movement specialist, participants explored
different ways of telling a narrative using their bodies, developing a physical language to tell a story through
a combination of improvisation, movement and physical theatre exercises.
‘I really gained a lot from the feedback and feel like I
had a lot of support.’ Young Friend
‘I learned how in physical theatre both dialogue and your body
can tell a story either at the same time or separately. It helped
me become confident and aware of what my body can do.’
Young Friends Touring Company
Choices and Falling
September to December 2010
January to April 2011
The Young Friend Touring Company: a company of dedicated young performers who devise
performances for other young people, inspired by the Almeida’s programme of work.
In the Autumn term, the company created a piece entitled Choices which was inspired by themes
including ambition and opportunity from the Almeida’s production of The Master Builder.
The Spring term took it’s inspiration from David Eldridge’s The Knot of the Heart, and the subsequent
performance, Falling, fused physical theatre and verbatim to explore the reflections of nine individuals
during a shared moment in time.
Over the two terms, the company toured their performance and workshop to over 20 different Year 7
and 8 classes across Islington, as well as performing their work as a curtain raiser for the Almeida
Projects spin-off production, Crawling in the Dark. Their work was seen by over 900 students.
The Young Friend Creative Board
The Young Friend Creative Board is a youth advisory board made up of 10 members whose roles
loosely mirror the staffing structure of the Almeida Theatre. The Board meet fortnightly to develop a
strategy for the Young Friend scheme, and programme and promote Young Friend activity. Each board
member is mentored and supported by their equivalent staff member from within the organisation.
Young Friend of the Almeida Creative Board
Key Achievements of the YFA Creative Board this year include:
• Securing £16,000 funding for our annual LAB project from Islington Council’s funderstorm
• Securing a silver level award from the Jack Petchey Foundation
• Designing and creating a new promotional flyer for the Young Friends scheme
• Planning and filming a short film about the Young Friends scheme
• Curating the Young Friend’s Festival, which ran alongside the Almeida Festival
• Projects Officers Hauk Pattison and Louie Keen have both participated in our trainee
workshop leader programme, and gone on to gain paid work at the Almeida and for other
companies
• Artistic Director Desara Bosnja won a Young Achiever’s Award for her work for the board
• Peer Mentor Shanice Stennett won an award for being apprentice of the year
‘This was a fantastic performance by talented
young actors. It was very valuable for our students
to see for a number of reasons...it’s inspiring for
them to see young performers taking their craft so
seriously and performing to such a high level.’
Teacher
‘The Almeida gives me the hope that one day I will not only
be working at the top of my game but also pioneering new
ways to see, experience and create theatre…In short I
wouldn't be who I am today if the Almeida and the Young
Friends scheme did not exist.’
Trainee Workshop Leaders
Trainee Workshop Leader Scheme
Between September 2010 and July 2011, Almeida Projects worked with ten trainees, for the third year
of the programme, to help them gain experience of the skills and tools necessary for working with
young people.
Trainees attended a three-day training course at the beginning of the year, led by Almeida Projects; took
part in monthly peer-led seminars; and had the opportunity to gain paid experience working as an
assistant workshop leader on one or more of our projects.
All trainees felt that their experience and skills as workshop leaders had grown and that they were
more confident and equipped for leading a session; and they all felt that they learnt by working with
other practitioners.
‘It was a fantastic scheme, which feels like it’s
gone really quickly – but when I look back I realise
that I have learnt and grown loads. At the start
of this I was still working in a pub, and now I’m
(just about) earning a wage as a freelance
‘The value of the scheme for me is that it bridged
the gap from uni into the ‘real world’ – you are
working professionally but still with support and
someone on the end of the phone.’
‘I have grown so much in the last 3 years...and I believe it’s all thanks to the
Almeida and the Young Friends Scheme. The skills I have gained have
helped me not only at the theatre but in my personal life and my working
life. I am able to manage and keep on top of things only because of the
work ethic I have gained from the Almeida and learning from the staff and
creative team at the Almeida.’
