November Elections. I know we are 

all anxious for the elections to be over. 

This time of year we are bombarded 

with debates, forums, and advertising 

messages from candidates and propositions 

telling us which way to vote. 

At the Camarillo Chamber, we 

view election time as a time 

for us to do what we do best! 

One of our five areas of focus 

is Business Advocacy and Political 

Action. We have been 

working hard over the past 

few months to make sure that 

we are representing the business 

community of Camarillo 

and we have reviewed the 

candidates and legislation that affect 

your business. Our mission is to make 

sure that Camarillo, California, and the 

U.S. elect business friendly candidates 

and adopt pro-business legislation. 

Our Business Advocacy Committee 

early in the year rewrote our Public 

Policy Platform. We reviewed the 

last update that was made in 2006 and 

saw that most the issues we were fighting 

for back then, we are still fighting 

for; issues around regulations, land use, 

water use, workforce, taxation, and education. 

Each month we went over bills 

that were being proposed in Sacramento 

and discussed the implications to business. 

We took stands against bills that 

we felt would hurt business and supported 

bills that were pro-business, and 

worked closely with our legislators and 

their staff providing a powerful voice. 

Before the primaries, we sent questionnaires 

to the candidates to help us 

understand their positions on business, 

and endorsed both Tony Strickland and 

Jeff Gorell in their races as candidates 

that we know will work hard to make 

sure government supports business. 

The Ballot Initiatives were studied and 

we took positions of opposition or support 

on those initiatives that will affect 

your business. 

We have also worked with the 

Chamber of Commerce Alliance of 

Ventura and Santa Barbara counties 

reviewing candidates, legislation and 

the initiatives and together as one large 

collective voice of business in our two

Not only are we continually advocating 

for your business, we provided 

opportunities for the community to 

become informed about and personally 

meet the candidates that are running 

for office. Last month we held a 

Candidates Forum at City Hall for the 

candidates running for City Council, 

Rec and Park District, 

and the Pleasant 

Valley School Board 

where we asked the 

candidates questions 

pertaining to business. 

The forum was 

televised on our local 

station for members 

of the community 

to have an opportunity 

to educate themselves 

and decide 

which candidate supports 

their interests. 

Then we hosted a 

Candidates Meet & 

Greet at Las Posas 

County Club, and 

invited all the candidates 

running for 

U.S. Congress, State Assembly, County 

Supervisor, as well as all the local races. 

The business community was able to 

personally talk with all the candidates 

and had the opportunity to ask their 

own questions and let the candidates 

know what was important for business 

in Camarillo. 

Our members support 

our effects to represent the 

entire business community 

of Camarillo through their 

membership in the Chamber. 

I thank you for that support. 

We could not do this work 

without you! We are continually 

working hard to represent 

your business in government, so 

you can concentrate on your business. 

For those of you who want to help us in 

our mission and become involved, our 

Public Policy Platform is on our website 

and you are all welcome to our Business 

Advocacy Committee meetings. We 

want to hear your needs and ideas on 

how Camarillo can stay the best place 

to do business.

Did you know that, with very few 

exceptions, if your employer is a member 

of the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce, 

you are too? Unless you work 

as an independent contractor or under 

a broker as in the case of real estate or 

insurance, you are automatically considered

in political arenas 

It’s been an honor to serve as your 

2012 Chairman for the Camarillo Chamber 

of Commerce. Our Chamber recently 

held our annual State of the City in which 

Mayor Jan McDonald gave us an update 

on the State of our City of Camarillo. It’s 

amazing how well our City is doing in 

this State of California with recent bankruptcies 

of cities around the State. This 

demonstrates the great leadership and local 

economy within our City. 

Working as a team, the staff, the 

Board and our Chamber committees 

have been actively working and advocating 

for our members and the local 

business community. And the City staff 

and elected officials have been working 

closely with the Chamber in regards to 

tourism, economic development and local 

business visits to listen to the needs 

of our business community. 

Your Camarillo Chamber of Commerce 

has been active in putting together 

many exciting programs and events this 

political season. The goal of the Camarillo 

Chamber of Commerce is to deliver to 

voters more information about making 

informed choices in this year’s Federal, 

State, County, City Council, School 

Board and Parks and Rec elections. 

It’s about that time, every four (4) 

years, when most Americans start to 

think about who they will choose on 

Election Day. Recently the Chamber of 

Commerce hosted a Candidates Forum 

at the Camarillo City Hall where the 

Chamber asked local candidates key 

pro-business questions developed by 

the Business Advocacy Committee. The 

Chamber also hosted a great local candidates 

Meet and Greet with the local, 

state and federal candidates at Las Posas 

Country Club, giving members a chance 

to meet current candidates one-on-one 

and ask the important questions. 

These upcoming elections are critical 

to the business community, especially 

the Presidents race. All of us have to understand 

what is important to us as we 

choose who to support. Is it issues that 

affect our businesses, fiscal responsibility, 

security or social issues that will 

determine what you expect from a candidate? 

The Chamber’s choice is a pro-business 

candidate. But what is a Pro-business 

candidate? Will it be a Democrat or 

Republican? Will this candidate improve 

business with free enterprise decisions 

and reduce unnecessary regulation or 

create a larger government with more 

regulation and move us more towards 

Socialism? Pro-business means that the 

government is not involved with unnecessarily 

regulating of the business community. 

Being pro-business means that you 

are willing to create an environment in 

which business is able to flourish and 

your willing to fight against limiting the 

growth of our business with more taxes 

and debt for our kids. The government 

cannot create jobs but can only inhibit 

job creation. The role of government is 

to provide for security. Government is 

supposed to stay out of business to let the 

American entrepreneur succeed. Hopefully 

we will make the right choice on 

the candidates that can and will deliver 

the right polices for our future.

10 Tips for Managing Multiple 

Generations in the Work Force 

Do you have Millennial employees 

at your business? If not, you could 

be missing out. Millennial employees 

(born between 1982 and 2000, give or 

take a few years) bring many benefits 

to your business. They’re energetic and 

enthusiastic, are fluent in technology 

and have lower salary expectations than 

more experienced workers. How can 

you attract Millennial employees to 

your workplace and integrate them into 

your team? Try these 10 tips. 

1. Understand their expectations. 

Know what Millennial employees hope 

to gain from working for you. Chances 

are, Millennials will make that clear 

during the job interview—but if they 

don’t, ask them. 

2. Challenge them. Millennials 

want to make a difference in their jobs 

from the get-go. Encourage that enthusiasm 

by assigning them challenging 

projects from the start, and adding more 

responsibility as they learn. 

3. Define tasks and goals. It may 

seem contradictory, but while Millennials 

enjoy independence, they also grew 

up with “helicopter parents,” teachers 

and coaches micromanaging their lives. 

Be crystal clear when assigning tasks. 

Set incremental deadlines and check in 

regularly to review progress. 

4. Provide ongoing feedback. An 

annual performance review isn’t enough 

for Millennials, who want to hear how 

they’re doing—both good and bad—on 

an ongoing basis. This may be a more 

hands-on approach than you’re used to 

with older employees, but it’s essential 

for Millennials to thrive. 

5. Offer flexibility. Millennials 

expect work-life balance, and view 

working remotely and flexible hours 


as essentials, not extras. Bonus: Offering 

these options not only attracts and 

retains Millennials, but pleases older 

employees, too. 

6. Provide continuing education. 

Millennials want to improve at their 

jobs. Sign them up for webinars or seminars 

in their areas of interest; send them 

to conferences and events to learn from 

more experienced peers; or simply provide 

on-the-job training and education. 

7. Match them with a mentor. 

Millennials welcome mentorships, and 

pairing a Millennial employee with an 

older, more experienced worker benefits 

both of them. It also cements bonds, 

which can help eliminate generational 

misunderstandings at work. 

8. Tailor benefits and rewards to 

their interests. Millennials may be less 

interested in benefits like dental insurance 

and more interested in perks like 

continuing education. In a 2011 PricewaterhouseCoopers 

survey, the majority 

of Millennials said they would like to 

customize their benefits. 

9. Let them BYOD. (That means 

“bring your own device.”) Tech-savvy 

Millennials often prefer to use their own 

laptops, cellphones or tablets for work 

instead of a company-issued device.

sure devices are secure and sensitive information 

isn’t compromised.

2011 Cisco Connected World Technology 

Report, 56 percent of Millennials 

said they wouldn’t work for a company 

that banned social media in the workplace— 

or they’d sneak around the policy.

10 Tips for Using Referrals to Grow Your Business 

For most small businesses, the holidays 

are a time to connect with customers 

by sending gifts or greeting cards or hosting 

special events. With everyone feeling a 

lot of good will, now is a great time to start 

using referrals from satisfied customers to 

build your business. Here are 10 tips for 

doing so: 

1. Ask for referrals. Many entrepreneurs 

fail to benefit from referrals because 

they’re simply too shy to ask. Most 

satisfied customers are happy to give you 

referrals--but they won’t think of it if you 

don’t ask them. 

2. Know the right time to ask. Aim 

to gather referrals at the completion of a 

project or upon delivery of a product. The 

goal is to approach the customer when 

they are happy with the purchase and the 

transaction is still fresh in their minds. 

3. Create a system. Set up a procedure 

for capturing referrals. This can vary 

depending on your industry. A business-tobusiness 

company might ask for referrals 

during a post-sale phone call or email. A 

retailer could enclose a card with each purchase 

that customers can fill out to refer a 

friend. 

4. Offer a reward. Encourage customers 

to give referrals by offering incentives, 

such as a discount on their next 

purchase, a free month of service or a 

small gift. Making rewards contingent on 

whether the referral makes a purchase can 

encourage higher-quality referrals who are 

more likely to buy. 

5. Build trust. Customers don’t want 

their friends bombarded with marketing 

messages. Make them comfortable providing 

referrals by explaining how you 

will use the contact information they provide. 

Will you send direct mail? Will you 

contact the person by phone? 

6. Follow up in a timely fashion. If 

you let referrals languish for months, their 

value can fade as the relationship between 

your customer and the prospect changes or 

your customer becomes less enthusiastic 

about your business. Set up a system to 

contact referrals within two weeks of obtaining 

them. 

7. Mention the connection, but 

don’t rely on it. When you contact a referral, 

be sure to let them know who referred 

them to you. However, don’t assume that 

this connection alone will spur the prospect 

to buy. You need to put forth as much 

effort as you would with any sale. 

8. Get to know them. Don’t give a 

“hard sell.” Lay the groundwork for a relationship 

by offering the referral something 

useful as an introduction to your business. 

This could be a whitepaper related to their 

industry, a free consultation, or a discount 

on their first purchase. 

9. Provide great service. When 

you win business from a referral, always 

provide outstanding service to the new 

customer. Otherwise, you will make the 

referring customer look bad for having 

recommended you, and you might lose not 

only the new customer’s business, but the 

old one’s as well. 

10. Repeat the cycle. Be sure to ask 

your new customer for a referral when the 

time is right— and watch your business 

grow exponentially!

Chamber provides forum for local 

candidates to address important business issues 

Budgets, programs and development 

were hot topics at the City Candidates 

Forum held on the evening of 

September 19 in the Camarillo City 

Council Chambers. Candidates for Camarillo 

City Council, Pleasant Valley 

“Yes, we work very closely with the 

City to create a business friendly community, 

but we work just as closely with 

the Pleasant Valley School District and 

the Rec & Park District,” said Wells. 

“Our schools are educating the next generation 

of business owners and government 

officials, and Rec & Park District 

not only beautifies our community, but 

is integral to making Camarillo a better 

place to be, for businesses, residents and 

visitors. 

Both incumbents for the two open 

seats on the Board of Trustees for the 

Pleasant Valley School District, are running 

again, as is a new candidate this 

year. Warren Harwood, elected first in 

2008 is running for his second term, 

while Suzanne Kitchens has been on the 

board since 2000. Kelly Long is running 

for the first time. All candidates attended 

the Forum. The Camarillo Chamber has 

not endorsed any candidates for Pleasant 

Valley School District.

developed by the Camarillo Chamber’s 

Business Advocacy Committee, to shine 

some light on how each of them would 

handle issues that might affect business 

in the community. 

“It’s important that we know how 

potential City Council members and the 

governing boards of these other local 

entities will address issues important 

to our local business community,” said 

Chamber CEO Jennifer Wells. 

While apparent why the Chamber 

would be interested in the race for City 

Council, it is not as obvious what affect 

the school board or recreation & park 

district can have on the business community. 

Camarillo City Council 

The race for City Council includes 

one incumbent, Kevin Kildee, and five 

other candidates vying for two open 

spots on the Council; Bill Little, Matt 

Lorimer, David Schlangen, Puneet 

Sharma, and Chris Valenzano. All candidates 

attended the Forum. The Camarillo 

Chamber has not endorsed any 

candidates for City Council. 

Pleasant Valley School 

Board Trustee 

School Board candidates with

Golf and Good times 

were the highlight of the 

night at the Chamber’s 

September social mixer 

Chamber members and their 

friends joined together at Sterling 

Hills Golf Club last month for 

the first of the Camarillo Chamber’s 

new quarterly 

social mixers. 

Fairways, 

Friends & Fun had 

27 registered golfers 

and even more 

attendees who came 

for the mingling 

portion of the program 

after golf. 

With this first 

themed mixer and subsequent events the Chamber hopes to provide 

opportunities for members to gather and connect while participating 

in mutually enjoyable activities such as golf. The social 

mixers will center around the sorts of activities people engage in 

that may lead to stronger connections around interests they may 

not have known they had in common. 

Sustainable fiscal 

growth, economic development 

and the fate of the 

City’s redevelopment projects 

were reported on by 

Mayor Jan McDonald to 

Camarillo Chamber members 

at the annual State of 

the City Luncheon, Sept.

McDonald spent a 

good deal of time addressing 

the issue of California 

Redevelopment Agencies 

and the fate of Camarillo’s 

program with the recent 

funding cuts that have 

come down from the State. 

“The news is pretty 

good for Camarillo,” said 

CEO Jennifer Wells. “Our 

redevelopment agency has 

always operated aboveboard 

with full transparency 

so many of the City’s 

existing projects will be allowed 

to finish.” 

The Mayor had other 

good news to report about 

the sustainability of Camarillo’s 

growth projects.

has been a long time, committed member 

of the Camarillo Chamber and I 

was lucky enough to join the Chamber 

Ambassadors when I transferred to Camarillo 

in March of 2012. 

Q: What does being a Chamber 

Ambassador mean to you? 

A: Being involved with the 

Chamber is a privilege and an opportunity 

to help small businesses connect 

with the community. Being an ambassador 

is truly an asset to my career because 

building relationships with community 

leaders and businesses is something you 

don’t get with a degree or a paycheck. 

Q: What is your favorite memory 

or story of your time as an Ambassador? 

A: My favorite memories are 

made with the many new business owners, 

business professionals, and great 

people who attend the monthly B @ 

B’s. Attending is simply not enough, but 

to arrive in a great mood ready to meet 

the other great community members of 

our Chamber never has a dull moment!

The Camarillo Chamber of Commerce Chamber Ambassadors are key to the successful workings 

of the Chamber. They act as an extension of the Chamber’s member services department, 

reaching out to new members and existing members, making them feel welcome, answering questions 

and acting as liaisons between the Chamber staff and members. 

Q: What is your personal philosophy, 

either in business or life in general? 

A: Be passionate! If you care 

about something, act on it with an open 

mind, a big smile, and let passion take 

the wheel. 

Q: What do you like to do in 

your spare time? 

A: Times away from the branch 

and Chamber events are spent with my 

family and cheerleaders. I’ve lead and 

supported low-income female student 

athletes for 12 years. I teach them to realize 

their potential and instill passion and 

a reason for getting the most out of their 

lives. 

Q: Do you have any parting 

words of wisdom you would like to impart 

to our readership? 

A: Donating time is a priceless 

gift to give and receive.

the Camarillo Chamber team. 

A: I worked for Power Bucks Advertising 

in Marin County, CA, then Ace-ana Promotions 

and RJR Engineering, Ventura, CA.

while working at the Chamber? 

A: Chambers have been an important part 

of my personal and professional life over the 

past decade, and having recently relocated 

back to Ventura County, I am thrilled by the 

opportunity to contribute to this tight-knit 

community. I look forward to supporting 

the accounting and member service needs of 

the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce and 

to become an integral part of its team. 

Q: What special skills do you bring to 

the Chamber – what do you like to do in 

your job? 

A: My previous professional experience 

lends itself to bookkeeping, sales, networking 

and customer service. These aspects 

together give me a balance that makes work

California by Assemblyman Jeff Gorell

Park. The announcement has been much 

awaited by people and organizations in 

the economic development arena, such 

as the Chamber of Commerce. 

“This is exactly what we need to get 

Assemblyman Jeff Gorell 

Camarillo, Ventura County, and California 

on the fast track to economic recovery,” 

said Wells. “I am very proud that 

our Chamber is right at the forefront of 

this recovery movement.” 

In addition to being known as a 

business friendly legislator, Assemblyman 

Gorell is a past Board member of 

the Camarillo Chamber, as is Gary Cushing 

who is currently working with Gorell 

and Newsom on the GOLD TEAM and 

also serves as the Chair of the Chamber’s 

Business Advocacy Committee. These 

connections help the Chamber to remain 

closely involved with what is happening 

with this new effort to bring businesses 

to the area. 

GOLD TEAM California has been 

created to counter the aggressive marketing 

activities of other states that send recruiters 

to California in an effort to lure 

businesses out of the state. The GOLD 

TEAM will be implementing the same 

sort of strategy as they travel out of state 

to let businesses know what a great place 

California is to be. 

“We must stand up for California 

and turn the tables on other aggressive 

states who have been attempting to lure 

our businesses and jobs away by the 

same throughout the nation,” said Assemblyman 

Jeff Gorell. 

The GOLD TEAM concept was developed 

by Assemblyman Gorell to help 

the Central Coast region and Ventura 

County, both of which he represents in 

Sacramento, to overcome the high rates 

of joblessness the area is facing along 

with all of California. 

“I recently read four newspaper 

headlines in two weeks chronicling the 

efforts of governors and legislative leaders 

in other states travelling to California 

to meet with CEOs here and attempt lure 

their businesses and jobs back to their 

home state,” said Gorell. 

The Camarillo Chamber also actively 

works towards keeping businesses 

from leaving the area. 

“Without businesses, there are no

just can’t afford to live here. We need to 

support businesses in our area.”

Chamber endorses new development 

The Economic Development Committee 

of the Camarillo Chamber of 

Commerce has released its endorsement 

of the project known as the Camarillo 

Lakes Conejo Creek Specific 

Plan. The project is a mixed use development 

of 741 acres within the SOAR 

and the City Urban Restriction Boundary 

(CURB) of the City of Camarillo. 

The Chamber agrees that planning for 

the long term future of Camarillo is the 

best policy to ensure controlled growth. 

The project provides many benefits 

to the City and its residents including 

added open space, increased 

natural habitat, and 

flood relief. By widening 

the Conejo 

Creek, the project 

removes the Camarillo 

Sanitation 

Wastewater Treatment 

Plant from the 

FEMA Flood Zone,

Congress: Don’t let Fiscal 

Cliff Ruin New Year’s Eve!

Whether they’re talking about unemployment, 

education, social values 

or public safety, many politicians regularly 

warn voters that “we’re heading for 

a cliff” unless we vote for them. While 

voters have become used to such rhetoric, 

this time America really is headed for 

a cliff, a fiscal cliff that is—unless Congress 

acts soon. 

The Chamber Alliance has recently 

communicated concerns to our members 

of Congress about the laws scheduled 

to change at midnight on December 31, 

2012. Among them are: 

• The end of last year’s temporary payroll 

tax cuts (resulting in a 2% tax increase 

for workers 

• End of certain tax breaks for businesses 

• Shifts in the alternative minimum tax 

that would hit taxpayers harder 

• The end of the Bush era tax cuts 

• The beginning of taxes related to implementation 

of “Obamacare” 

In addition, automatic federal spending 

decreases will go into effect as part 

of the last year’s debt ceiling compromise—including 

defense and Medicare. 

If Congress does not act and reach 

a compromise, taxes will automatically 

increase just as our economy appears to 

be improving. While higher taxes could 

reduce the budget deficit by up to $540 

billion, according to the Congressional 

Budget Office, other policies going into 

effect could reduce the nation’s GDP by 

4 percent, thereby causing sudden negative 

growth and a likely recession. 

Nobody expects Congress to act before 

Election Day, but action is needed 

as soon as Congress reconvenes for its 

“lame duck session” next month. Otherwise, 

recent economic growth will likely 

go in the opposite direction as Dec. 31 

gets closer. 

The Chamber Alliance urges its 

members to contact their Congressmembers 

and insist on immediate action to 

avoid this frightening fiscal cliff scenario.

Referendum 

Repeals 2009 provision that allows multistate companies to 

choose the cheaper of two formulas for calculating their 

California tax liability and payroll, creates a "single‐sales" formula 

based on product sales in California. Allocates $550 million 

annually for five years of the $1 billion anticipated increase in 

revenue in order to fund projects that "create energy efficiency 

and clean energy jobs" 

A “Yes” vote approves & “No” vote rejects a new State Senate 

district map drawn by the Citizens Redistricting Commission 

Approval results in no fiscal effect on state or local governments. 

Voter rejection results in the district boundary lines being 

adjusted by officials supervised by the California Supreme Court 

incurring a one‐time State cost of about $500,000, and a onetime 

materials costs to Counties of about $500,000.
