Pink Ribbon Month
Celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness and Support
By Sonja N. Fung, ND
Cancer--there is not another announcement that can evoke more powerful emotions.
This diagnosis can throw one into the depths of confusion or impact our
life and the lives of others in such a profound way. Breast cancer is the most frequently
diagnosed cancer in women in the United States and the second leading
related cause of death. An estimated 200,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive
breast cancer this year and 40,000 will die. Another 60,000 will be diagnosed
with pre-cancerous breast disease.
Cancer is complicated. Many factors contribute to a person developing cancer.
Just by being a woman, our risk increases. Even though we know some of the factors
that can lead to developing cancer, there is no definitive answer as to why
breast cancer develops in some women and not others. There are some risk factors
we have no control over such as aging and family history. There are, however,
risk factors that we can control such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising
regularly, limiting alcohol intake, and eating a balanced, nutritional diet.
Become informed about your body. The most important step that a woman can
take to reduce the risk of breast cancer is to familiarize yourself with your body.
It is vital to do monthly self-breast exams. If you know how your normal breast
tissue looks and feels, you can easily detect any changes in the tissue and notify
your doctor. Receiving bi-annual clinical breast exams is another step in early
detection. The Susan Komen Foundation and the National Cancer Institute recommends
that women with average risk of breast cancer receive a mammogram every
year or two starting at age 40. For women with a strong family history of breast
cancer, mammography screening should start earlier depending on how high the
individual’s risk. Mammography is not as sensitive in younger women due to denser
breast tissue, but the mammogram can be followed with a breast MRI for more
accurate results.
Genetic screening is another way of accessing your risk for breast cancer, especially
if there is a strong family history. Talk to your doctor about genetic tests for
BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. Women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene
mutations have a 35-80% increased risk of developing cancer compared to 12% in
women without the gene mutation. Again, just because you have the gene mutation
does not mean you will develop breast cancer. Up to 40% of women with the
BRCA1 gene mutation do not have breast cancer. Even with all the research that
has been done on cancer, it is still not known how or why some people develop
the disease and others do not.
What if I have breast cancer already?
If you are or have been diagnosed with breast cancer and are looking for additional
resources, you probably have experienced the flood of information coming
at you from the Internet, friends, and family. Differentiating correct and false information
can be confusing and overwhelming. Naturopathic doctors are experts in
bridging the gap between conventional and integrative approaches to cancer care.
They focus on working with your oncology team to maintain your quality of life,
minimize potential side effects, and maintain your fighting spirit through a personalized
plan, which includes diet and lifestyle modifications and appropriate herbal and
nutritional supplementation.
Above all, believe in your body’s wisdom. Your body is as vital and as strong
as your will. As George Groddeck writes, “One must not forget that recovery is
brought about not by the physician, but by the sick man himself. He heals himself, by
his own power, exactly as he walks by means of his own power, or eats, or thinks,
breathes or sleeps.”
The doctors at Live Well Clinic believe in empowering women through education
and knowledge by protecting themselves through regular breast exams. For Breast
Cancer Awareness Month, in honor of the women who bravely fight cancer every
day, we will be offering FREE CLINICAL BREAST EXAMS every Friday from 2-5pm
throughout the month of October.
Dr. Sonja Fung is a naturopathic doctor at the Live Well Clinic in La Quinta, CA. She not only works for the
prevention of breast cancer, but uses an integrative approach to support women who currently have breast
cancer. For more information, go to www.livewellclinic.org or call 760-771-5970. Live Happy, Live Well.
MORTGAGES REDUX
By Thomas J. McDermott
We have had a lot inquiries since we did our article on mortgages several
months ago. If you cannot make your mortgage payments, you have a problem. If
your house is underwater in the sense that you paid more for it than it is worth,
you have got a larger problem. If your house is underwater vis-a-vis the mortgage,
that is, the total amount of the mortgage due is now greater than the value of the
house, you have got a whopping problem. What can you do?
We gave you some pointers in the last article. If you have a purchase money
mortgage on your primary residence, you can walk away from the house with no
consequences other than, of course, the loss of the house and the loss of your
down payment. However, you cannot be held liable for any deficiency judgment. A
purchase money mortgage means that the mortgage was taken out for the purpose
of buying the house at the time the house was purchased and that there has never
been a refinance or a home equity loan. Just the one mortgage, taken out to
purchase the house, and continually serviced thereafter.
Primary residence means that it is the house you live in. This can become an issue
in an area such as the Coachella Valley where many residences were purchased as
second homes. Can a second home be a “primary” residence? Yes, under certain
circumstances. But this is where the matters start to get muddier.
As we pointed out in our last article, the so called “moratorium” on foreclosures
in California was no such thing. It had so many complications, contradictions, and
exceptions, that it might as well never have been issued. However, the lenders took
some notice of the moratorium and rather than try and sort out the issues, generally
were giving people time in which to try and work out their financial problems. This
was not entirely due to the generosity, kindness and good citizenship of lenders.
They were so overwhelmed with foreclosures and potential foreclosures that they
just couldn’t get around to doing much.
Unfortunately, the picture has not brightened. Instead it has darkened. For
example, on August 5, 2009, the Associated Press reported that the government’s
$50 Billion program that was supposed to help ease the mortgage crisis is hardly
being utilized. For example, Bank of America holds 796,000 loans that are eligible
for modification but has only modified 4% of those loans. J.P. Morgan Chase has
394,000 loans eligible but has only modified 20% of those loans. Wells Fargo has
329,000 loans eligible for modification and has only modified 6%. The numbers
with the rest of the primary lenders in the United States are just as discouraging.
Now the horizon is becoming even darker. There are large numbers of people,
attorneys and others, who have entered into the business of “solving your mortgage
problems.” The State Attorney General, Edmund G. (Jerry) Brown, Jr., has set up
a ten person task force consisting of four lawyers and six investigators who are
working with Federal, State and local law enforcement as part of a statewide
crack down on foreclosure fraud. It was reported in the California Bar Journal
for September 2009 that two lawyers have already been disbarred for engaging in
foreclosure fraud. Christian Michael Dillon of Dana Point and Nabile Anz of Irvine
(These lawyers were not “disbarred” in the sense that there was a proceedings
against them; after they were charged with foreclosure fraud, they both resigned
from the Bar. This means that they are no longer authorized to practice law in
the State of California.) Companies are advertising everywhere, on the radio, on
television, on the internet and in the newspapers claiming that they will help you
solve your mortgage problems. Most of these companies simply send you a set
of forms and ask you to fill them out and return them. These forms are usually
the same forms you will receive if you go to your own bank directly and ask for a
modification. However, with the mortgage modification company, you may have to
pay up to $5,000 for this service.
There is no reason why you cannot deal directly with your own loan servicer
to try and get your mortgage modified. Here, for example, are some suggestions:
• If the loan servicer makes any promise whatsoever, such as foregoing a mortgage
payment, modifying the loan or postponing a foreclosure sale, you must get it in
writing. If you just get it over the telephone, it is meaningless.
• Keep detailed written records of every contact you have with your loan
Mortgage con’t. on page 23
Getting the facts straight
Dr. Nicole Ortiz
The buzz about the H1N1 flu and the new push for
vaccines is in the forefront of conversations from
doctor’s offices to the local coffee shops. On June 11,
2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled
a global pandemic of 2009 is the influenza A (H1N1)
virus. This new virus emerged in Mexico in March
2009 and spread to the United States. With so much
information and misinformation often driven through
fear tactics by the media, I feel it is necessary to identify
the issues at hand. With the potential that millions of
Americans, such as yourself, will be infected with this
virus or the common seasonal flu, prevention, starting
today, should be your focus. The most fundamental
prevention strategy is to bolster your immune system.
At the end of this article, I will discuss how to build
and maintain a strong immune defense.
Let’s begin with the basics: What is the difference
between seasonal flu and H1N1 flu?
Seasonal flu, which affects millions of people annually,
will continue to be present as fall and winter approach.
The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has recently
changed their recommendation for children stating
ALL children should be vaccinated for the seasonal
flu. Interestingly, there is no published reason as to
why their recommendation has changed. What has
changed about seasonal flu this year to warrant this
new recommendation? The reality is we do not know.
Is the CDC piggy-backing on the press the H1N1 is
getting or maybe there is a risk of getting both types
of flu at the same time? The current guidelines for
the H1N1 vaccination recommendations can be found
at http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/. I am not currently in
support of vaccinating every child because of the potential
side effects experienced from the vaccination
itself. However, if a child has severe allergies, asthma,
or serious health complications, I recommend checking
with your doctor to immediagely start to boost
their immune system.
The H1N1 flu pandemic is much like the 1957 flu.
Similar strains of the virus were Swine Flu and Novel
H1N1. Even though there have been “cousins” of this
virus circulating for many years, the 2009 H1N1 virus
has yet to be seen in our immune systems. One
reason we are anticipating an increase in 2009 H1N1
influenza cases is because it is a new strain and we
not yet built up an immunity to it. Interestingly, the
age group most affected by H1N1 is 25-49 year olds.
This is younger than we may have expected which is
probably attributed to the gradual decline in health of
our nation due to poor food quality, stressful lifestyles,
diabetes, and obesity. This age distribution is a reversal
from seasonal influenza, where approximately 90% of
severe and fatal cases occur in the elderly population.
Currently, a national rush to immunize for the H1N1
virus is underway. The vaccine was under development
this summer which leaves little time to test its longterm
effects on people. Interestingly, five manufacturers
have immunity from lawsuits if the vaccine causes
any negative health conditions. This means millions
who “step up” for the H1N1 flu shot may be protected
from the virus; but according to a government act,
they will also be unable to sue over any adverse side
effects they may experience. The US will have up to 45
million doses of the fast-tracked vaccine and approximately
150,000,000 of another trivalent(?) flu vaccine.
The US spent over two billion dollars to purchase
anti-viral drugs, masks, and the new vaccine. This is a
significant expenditure for a virus that has not proven
to have significant fatalities. Again, I would advise that
you do your homework before you roll up your sleeve
to receive your dose. The vaccine contains immune
adjutants that a number of studies have demonstrated
the potential ability to trigger autoimmune disorders,
including rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and
lupus. People who already have autoimmune disorders
should avoid this vaccine.
Symptoms of 2009 H1N1 Virus
The 2009 H1N1 virus has been reported to cause
many different flu-like symptoms including fever, coughing,
sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue,
nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Is H1N1 flu deadly? Most people in our community
that will develop the seasonal flu or H1N1 flu will not
need to be treated. As monitored by the WHO, the
overwhelming majority of patients continue to experience
mild illness. People at high risk of death or
severe health complications from the flu include pregnant
women, and people with asthma and/or a compromised
immune system who should be treated immediately.
While there has been a small percentage of
deaths from H1N1, we do not need to live in fear of
the H1N1 virus.
Is there a test to identify if I have influenza of any kind?
Special tests to differentiate pandemic H1N1 from
seasonal flu have been sent to every state health department,
but it is not possible to test everyone with
flu-like symptoms. Furthermore, the test
isn’t 100% accurate
so it is
not the most
reliable tool for
doctors.
What should
you do to protect
yourself?
1. Educate yourself
so you can make an
informed choice!
Each week CDC
analyzes information
about influenza
disease activity in
the United States and
publishes findings of
key flu indicators in a
report called FluView.
2. Boost your immune system immediately.
Recommendations for adults--supplement the nutrients
most essential for optimal immune functions.
Many, if not a majority of adults, are deficient in one
or more of these nutrients. A very safe and nutritive
prophylactic treatment would include:
1. Vitamin C 500mg--1 gram daily
2. Cod Liver Oil--1tablespoon daily (contains Omega 3 fish
oils and Vitamin A; both important for immune support)
3. Vitamin D3--4,000 IU daily of liquid supplement
4. Zinc--205mg daily with food
3. Remember to wash your hands FREQUENTLY to
avoid transfer of the virus.
4. Stay hydrated (at least ½ your body weight in ounces
of water) daily.
If you have influenza, these practical tips can assist you
back on your feet faster.
1. Sleep. Really!!!! Stay in bed as much as possible.
Your body takes about 7 days to fully recover from
the influenza virus. Returning to work or stressful
situations too soon can cause a relapse and serious
health complications. Your co-workers and neighbors
will thank you for staying at home.
2. A fantastic herbal remedy for the treatment of influenza
(either common influenza or H1N1) is elderberry
syrup. This herb helps ease the “icky” side-effects of
the flu and accelerate your healing time.
3. Signs that warrant an emergency room visit include
shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, confusion
or seizures, persistent vomiting or inability to retain
liquids, and bluish lips.
Tenants Beware…A Love Story
By Renee Woodward
I am a tenant and this is not a love story! In July I found several foreclosure notices
taped to my back gate alerting me that my lovely home, where I have lived for
almost three years, was up for auction in August. In complete disbelief this was
happening to me, I called the owner of the house. I was told a refinance was in
the works and “advisers” told them to stop the mortgage payments. Oh gee how
comforting! I would have loved to have known this, maybe a few months ago!
Suffice to say after I asked a flurry of questions and some of them answered, most
of them were met with “Don’t worry, you will have a 60-day notice,” I was more
confused than ever and wondering if I was going to be homeless very soon. What
were my tenant rights? How much time did I actually have? How long was the
foreclosure process going to take? Would the house be refinanced by the time it
was going to auction? Would the Sheriff evict me? My head was spinning!
Then I became angry. How could the owner do this to a single mom? From what
I have read and heard this type of situation is happening everwhere and no one
is being spared. How long had the mortgage not been paid and worst, what was
happening with my hard-earned rent money? Well, it was kept by the landlord, of
course.
After my anger disappeared, I began to educate myself on tenant rights. I found
the Website www.tenantstogether.org. What I discovered, most importantly, was
that a bill has been passed recently that extends the time a tenant may stay in a
rental foreclosure from 60 to 90 days. Whew!
I contacted an attorney about the rent issue and was disheartened to learn
that it is not illegal for a landlord to take your rent money even though they
are not paying his/her mortgage. There is something wrong with this scenario as
thoughts of my landlord traveling around the world with my money dance in my
head. August came much too quickly and I discovered that the house, indeed, went
back to the bank on the appointed date that was posted on the original notice.
Before I could ask what bank and when did the 90-day clock actually start ticking,
I received another notice on my front door. This time (things are looking up)
from a realtor representing a new bank who now owns the house. I read the
information and was particularly interested in a group of words that jumped out
at me “cash for keys." I had heard this quote from people and relators who have
been in this same situation. Apparently, this is becoming an epidemic.
The bottom line is if you can vacate the house within a certain time. The sooner
the better, the more money the bank gives you. I called my parents to let them
know my situation and they warned me about the fraud that is currently going on
regarding this situation. In the background as my Mom was saying “well how much
money dear,” my Dad was yelling, "get it in writing, get it writing!" Of course, I
reviewed the paperwork and verified that this is a binding contract. Wow, was this
too good to be true? I handed the bank represetative my keys and receive cash?
Just like that?
As I’m writing this, I am waiting for my check and frantically trying to pack… I
still can’t believe this is happening. The money will come in handy and, it is amazing,
how quickly you can find movers and a new place to live when you are forced into
this situation.
My job is based on deadlines, and so it seems is my life.
Having a Web Site Is Not Enough.
Many businesses are content with simply having an Internet web site, then wonder
why a large percentage of market-share eludes them. How do you gain consumer
attention on the Internet? Well, that web site is just not enough!
Promoting your business online should be a high priority. The statistics prove
that the Internet can produce a third or more of your total business. Why then do
businesses devote so little effort to such a potentially lucrative marketing medium?
Most see measurable return-on-investment almost immediately, allowing for quick
evaluation and continual adjustments to improve results.
How do you promote your business online? One option is Search Engine
Optimization. SEO is great, but not the only way to populate a web site.
Pay-per-click advertising is effective, but PPC should be used to supplement, not
replace efforts to improve a site's ability to earn good search results.
To develop a business web site with relevant traffic takes research, experience,
and knowledge. The number of conversions, not simply the number of site visitors,
determines a site's success.
Marketing on the Internet
To market online, first make certain that the site is correctly designed for search
and sales. To be effective, encourage visitors to take an action. Here are a few
suggestions.
Start with Your Competition
One of your objectives is to beat the competition in search engine rankings and
web site content, so research your competitors and examine what they feature and
what they offer.
Online you are competing with all the similar businesses in your area with a
web presence. Select "the best of the best" of your competition. Do they offer
something you do not? What do they consider the most important information to
promote? Does the content on your site elevate your business above the others
and encourage visitors to take action? Action is the priority.
Everyone Loves a Deal
Place a special promotion section on your site. Value-added offers elevate your
image, whereas discounted rates can compromise your position and negatively
affect rate integrity.
A hotelier once decided to include a complimentary breakfast to improve sales
and now this is often standard practice. Create special promotions targeted to
your market segment.
Use Permission Marketing To Build Repeat Business
Ask your web site visitors for permission to send them a regular flow of
promotions. Include verbiage such as "Click here to join our emailing list and
receive early notification of specials before they are offered to the general public".
Permission marketing builds a database of interested visitors to your site.
Using Signature Files
A signature file is commonly called an electronic business card. A signature
added to your email correspondence is an effective free method of directing traffic
to your web site.
Developing a Link Strategy
A good link strategy is a very important part of SEO. When ranking your web
site, several search engines consider the number and quality of in-bound links to
rank your website.
Remember that in-bound quality links are beneficial and out-bound links detract
from your ranking with search engines. An effective link strategy can boost site
production considerably, but leave this to the experts, there are many pitfalls and
penalties if it is done incorrectly.
Next Steps
Internet Marketing ties together the creative and technical aspects of the Internet,
which includes site design, development, advertising, and sales. Methods and
strategies incorporate a wide range of services such as: Search Engine Marketing,
(including SEO and pay-per-click advertising), display advertising, e-mail, newsletter,
and web press release marketing,
Yes, Internet marketing involves more than simply having a web site, but the
Internet is still the most effective and least expensive way to expose your business
to local or global traffic and new customers.
In prior months, I discussed adrenal fatigue and metabolic
syndrome (syndrome X) as two possible reasons
why you might be feeling tired. Another common cause
of fatigue is hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism involves
the thyroid gland; a small, butterfly shaped gland that
sits at the base of your neck and controls your metabolism
or the speed at which your body operates. If
functioning properly, secretions from the thyroid gland
can elevate your mood and energy, however, when it is
not producing enough hormones, such as in the case of
hypothyroidism, it can lead to fatigue and many other
symptoms.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism include:
• fatigue
• increased weight gain even with a low-calorie diet
• depression
• constipation
• overly sensitive to cold weather
• poor circulation and numbness in hands and feet
• muscle cramps at rest
• itchy, dry skin
• hair falls out easily
• low basal body temperature
It is estimated that more than 12% of the U.S. population
will develop a thyroid condition during their lifetime.
Some twenty million Americans have some form
of thyroid disease, and up to 60% of those with this
disease are unaware of their condition. Women are
5-8 times likely to develop this problem, and the most
prevalent cause of thyroid disorders is Hashimoto’s
thyroiditis. This condition causes the body to destroy
the cells responsible for producing thyroxin and other
hormones secreted by the thyroid gland. This results in
a hypothyroid or a slow metabolism.
Some thyroid disorders are overlooked because
Why Am I Tired? Part III
You might not see it on your calendar, but Oct. 18 – 24 is National Save for Retirement
Week. This event, endorsed by Congress, is designed to promote the benefits
of saving for retirement and to encourage workers to take full advantage of their
employer-sponsored retirement plans — so you may want to use this week as a
starting point to do just that.
For many of us, the need to boost our retirement savings is critical. In fact, some
53% of Americans report that the total value of their household’s savings and investments,
excluding the value of their primary home and any defined benefit plans, is
less than $25,000, according to the 2009 Retirement Confidence Survey sponsored
by the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
Also, the decline in popularity of these defined benefit plans — the traditional
pension plans that make payments based primarily on years of service — is one reason
that saving for retirement has become such a major issue. From 1986 to 2008,
participation in defined benefit plans among full-time workers in private industry
declined from 76% to 24%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. In many
cases, these defined benefit plans have been replaced by defined contribution plans,
such as 401(k) plans — which means that much of the responsibility of adequately
funding retirement has shifted from the employer to the individual.
Given these factors, it is clear that you must be proactive in building resources
to achieve the retirement lifestyle you have envisioned. So, consider taking the following
steps:
• Contribute to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan. If possible, try to
put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other tax-advantaged, employersponsored
plan, such as a 403(b) or 457(b). It is a good idea to spread your 401(k)
many patients who suffer from ‘hypothyroid symptoms’
may not have a problem with their actual thyroid, but
rather with the glands that control the thyroid such as
the hypothalamus and pituitary gland, which are located
in the brain. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland
secrete hormones that control the thyroid.
The process of creating these active hormones is
quite complex; so, the first thing everyone must understand
is that your hormone system or endocrine
system is like an intricate web. If one hormone is in
excess or is diminished, then it will affect another and
so on creating a domino effect. Your hormones are
messengers that tell different cells in your body what
to do. Your active thyroid hormones go to each cell
and tell them to take up more oxygen and burn more
energy, which gives you energy--just like stepping on a
gas pedal will accelerate your car.
The chain of command for your thyroid starts with
a gland called the hypothalamus. This tells the pituitary
gland to secrete Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH),
which tells the thyroid gland to make more thyroxine
(T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) by transporting iodine
into the thyroid and stimulating another hormone TPO
(thyroid perixidase activity). Still with me? There is
quite a bit more to this, but what you need to know
is T4 is the non-active form of the hormone and it is
converted into the active form T3, mainly in the liver.
There are also some other forms of inactive thyroid
hormones, which get converted into the active form in
the gut, which is why it is important to have a healthy
digestive system. Symptoms such as: gas, bloating, excessive
fullness after meals, diarrhea, constipation and
use of anti-acids or acid-blockers are all signs that your
digestive system is not working properly and may indirectly
affect the thyroid.
Financial Focus
Diagnosis of hypothyroid is usually based on lab
results with corresponding signs and symptoms. It is
common for those with HMO insurance plans to only
get your TSH levels tested to check for thyroid problems.
If the lab test shows a high TSH level, then you
will most likely be diagnosed as hypothyroid (because
your body is trying to make more thyroid hormones to
compensate for already low levels). Current medical
treatment for elevated TSH levels includes prescription
thyroid medication which may increase your metabolism
and energy levels, but may not address the underlying
disorder(s) and thus will not restore health and
balance to the body. Other important lab tests for the
thyroid include free T3 and T4, free thyroxin index, T3
uptake and thyroid antibodies. These tests can rule out
disorders of other glands in the body that control the
thyroid and help focus treatment on the root cause.
For example, if you are not making enough of the active
version of the thyroid hormones because of stress
hormone dysfunction, then a medication will never fix
the underlying issue. In this instance, addressing the
stress gland (adrenal) dysfunction is crucial to restoring
a healthy hormone balance.
The thyroid and its other controlling glands may also
be affected by: testosterone levels, birth control pills,
estrogen, progesterone, cortisol (stress hormone), lack
of essential fatty acids, altered digestive function and
many others. This is why it is important to carefully examine
all systems of the body in order to restore function
and balance to your body. Look for a healthcare
practitioner that will help uncover the root cause of
your low energy levels and start feeling better today.
If you would like to find out if you have a thyroid condition or another
issue that is causing you to feel chronically tired, contact Dr. Hashimoto at
760-636-0079 or find him on the Web at www.n2healthnow.com
dollars among the available investments in a way that reflects your risk tolerance
and time horizon. And as your income increases, try to increase your 401(k) contributions.
At a minimum, put in enough to earn your employer’s match, if one is
offered. Due to the prolonged economic slump, some employers have cut back or
eliminated their 401(k) matching contributions
• Open an IRA. Even if you contribute to a 401(k), you are probably still eligible
to open an IRA. A traditional IRA can grow on a tax-deferred basis and a Roth IRA
grows tax-free, provided you have had your account for at least five years and do
not begin taking withdrawals until you are 59 1/2. Plus, you can usually find that an
IRA provides more investment options than a 401(k) plan.
• Rebalance your investment portfolio regularly. During the long Bear Market,
many new retirees faced difficulties when they were forced to tap into investment
portfolios whose value had dropped significantly. You can help avoid this problem by
periodically reviewing and rebalancing your investments. For example, if you know
you’re going to retire within the next five years, you may want to consider shifting
some of your assets into shorter-term investments that may not be as susceptible
to market volatility. You may speak with a financial advisor, who can help you review
your specific situation. By making the right moves, you can turn every week into a
“Save for Retirement” week, and you will probably be glad you did once your actual
retirement week arrives.
Seriously and honestly,
I am not in favor of
dressing our pets in
costumes for any occasion.
But, I was encouraged
to write an
article on the subject;
so, I thought about it
and decided to give it a
try. Halloween is around
the corner and the pet
and boutique stores are
already showing off costumes
for our fuzzy friends. Some of us show off our pets in these cute outfits
with parades, fashions shows or by letting our pet answer the door on Halloween
when we proudly listen to all the "ooos" and "ahs" as kids see “Yoda” wagging his
tail. Imagine a Great Dane in a Black Widow outfit? Yikes!!
Halloween is an annual celebration, but just what are we actually celebrating?
And, how did this peculiar custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a kind of demon
worship? Or, is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual? I asked my
little Shih Tzu and she didn’t have a clue why she was now standing there dressed
like Zsa Zsa Gabor. The word “Halloween” actually has its origins in the Catholic
Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1
being “All Hollows Day” (or “All Saints Day”), is a Catholic day of observance in
honor of saints. But, in fifth century BC in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended
on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New Year.
One story relates that on that day the disembodied spirits of all those who had
died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to
possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for afterlife. This is
the part where my Shih Tzu dove under the couch and left me on my own with my
research.
The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time,
allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living. Naturally, the living did not
want to be possessed. So, on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish
the fires in their homes to make them cold and undesirable. They would dress up
in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily parade around the neighborhoods,
while being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for
bodies to possess.
So, there you have it! We dress up for Halloween to scare off evil spirits as well
as ourselves. However, I could never find out who had the brainiac idea of dressing
up our canines and felines and do they like it? I am still waiting for an answer
from the “Doggie Lama.” I dragged my Shih Tzu out from under the couch and she
said she would dress up if I promised that when she rings doorbells she would get
cookies and could ask to see the “wine list.” With that, she spun around a couple
of times and then asked, “does this outfit make my butt look big?”

y Linda Wright
“I admire anybody who has the guts to write anything at all.”
E. B. White
The handwritten note. What does it say?
It says that someone took the time to put their feelings into words. They actually
bought the paper, pulled up a chair and thought of you.
I know. I know. Even Grandma is texting. Cell phones and Blackberries and
computers, oh my!
A thoughtfully worded note can make such a powerful impression
on someone. A few lines in your own words, in your
handwriting, on good paper that you personally selected can
bring a smile even to the computer geeks of the world.
Personal notes can express your sorrow, it can let the interviewer
know you want the job, it can congratulate someone on
their wedding, new baby, new home, bar mitzvah, etc.
A personal, handwritten note can THANK someone. Read
this…
A THANK YOU NOTE SHOULD BE WRITTEN TO THE GIVER
OF EVERY GIFT YOU RECEIVE.
My three daughters, around age 6, each had the same response
when opening their birthday gifts and finding note cards
and return address labels personalized with their names. “Oh….
wow…..uh….thanks?”
Even at a very young age, when their “R’s” were written backwards,
I insisted they write a timely thank you card when receiving
gifts. Or perhaps a no-reason note to their grandparents…just to
say hello.
I would like to brag a little and say that they are now excellent
note writers, but I would be lying. They Facebook me instead. What the heck is this
all about? I digress.
Written language was the product of an agrarian society. Some of the very oldest
written inscriptions concerned the celebration of beer and the daily ration allotted
to each citizen. Could these have been the first personal notes asking someone to
join them for a “brewski”? Eat. Drink. Man. Woman.
People generally stay away from the “blank” cards, opting to find a card that
already has the words they need. That’s fine. There are a lot of people who are well
paid to find the words for others. I suggest that you try to dig deep and write the
words yourself just for giggles.
There are five basic steps to writing a thank you note.
1) greet the giver
2) thank them
3) say something nice about it’s intended use
4) mention the past…or refer to the future
5) repeat your thanks
Send the thank you note even if you are late in doing so. You know you’re late.
They know you’re late. Don’t apologize for being late. It makes the note take on a
different tone when you do so.
These same basic guidelines apply to most types of personal notes. People always
remember a handwritten note. In particular, they remember
the unexpected ones.
Send a note to the coffee shop owner who always remembers
your order.
Send a quick note to a friend with a great recipe she HAS
to try!
Drop a note to a neighbor whose son you saw working at
the yogurt shop. My, how handsome and polite he is!
Let your potential employer know in writing how much
you enjoyed meeting him and you really want the job.
Thank someone who called you long distance on their
dime just to talk for an hour.
Thank the guy or gal who set you up with a blind date
that you REALLY liked!
Sure, we are all super busy people, but I promise that
when you take the time to send a personal, handwritten
note, you have made someone’s day. It can even be just
one or two lines. As Shakespeare said, “Brevity is the soul
of wit.”
So do this--write the note…affix the stamp….mail.
Write the note…affix the stamp….mail.
“The Great California ShakeOut”
Thursday, October 15, 2009
On Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 10:15 a.m., millions of Californians
will participate in the largest earthquake drill ever! The
purpose of the ShakeOut is to practice how to protect ourselves
during earthquakes, and to get prepared at work, school, and
home. Everyone can participate!
What You SHOULD Do:
Official rescue teams continue to advocate use of the internationally
recognized “Drop, Cover and Hold On” protocol to protect
lives during earthquakes:
• DROP to the ground (before the earthquake drops you).
• Take COVER by getting under a sturdy desk or table.
• HOLD ON to it until the shaking stops.
What You SHOULD NOT Do:
• DO NOT get in a doorway! A doorway is not the safest
place to be during an earthquake. Doorways do not protect
you from flying or falling objects. Get under a table instead!
• DO NOT run outside! The ground is moving and you can
fall or be injured. Running outside is dangerous as glass,
bricks, or other items may be falling. You are safer if you stay
inside under a table.
• DO NOT believe the so-called “Triangle of Life”! An e-mail
has circulated which recommends potentially life threatening
actions; the source has been discredited by leading experts.
Earthquake Preparedness Tips:
What we do before an earthquake will determine what our lives
will be like after. Here are a few helpful hints: 1) Secure items
that might fall in your home during earthquakes, 2) Create a
personal or family disaster-preparedness plan, 3) Plan for your
family's specific needs (seniors, children, pets, etc.), 4) Teach all
family members how to use a fire extinguisher, 5) Create wallet
cards for each family member with essential contact information,
6) Organize or refresh
your emergency supply
kits, 7) Store at least one
gallon of water per person,
per day, for at least
three days and ideally for
two weeks.
Much more information
on The Great ShakeOut
and earthquake preparedness
can be found at www.
ShakeOut.org. Please visit
this website and get prepared.
RECYCLING USED OIL FILTERS
If you change the oil in your car yourself, recycle both the used oil AND the used
oil filter. With today’s interest in sustaining resources, these items can be taken to
a Certified Collection Center (a location authorized by the California Integrated
Waste Management Board). Used oil filters contain steel, which is made into new
products – such as cans, cars, appliances and construction material. Visit www.ciwmb.
ca.gov/USEDOIL/ for more information.
Steps to Recycling Oil Filters
By following these directions, you’ll recycle more of your motor oil:
1.
Remove filter from engine to “hot-drain” it while engine
is still warm. WARNING: Use extreme caution when
hot-draining filters to avoid burns (wear protective
equipment such as goggles and gloves).
Public Works at Work
Construction on Highway 111 in the
Point Happy Rock Area
The contractor has completed loose
rock removal at Point Happy Rock, and is
preparing to grout some of the remaining
loose rock. Next step will be to install
maccaferri rock fabric, which will cover the
cliff face and help mitigate and diffuse any
future rock fall. Upon completion of the
installation of the fabric, the contractor will
then proceed with the installation of the
rock fall barrier fence and wall. Currently, traffic is still down to one lane in each
direction, but has been flowing smoothly.
2.
3.
Using a tool such as a screwdriver, carefully puncture
dome end of filter. Turn filter upside down so it
drains completely into your container. Allow filter
to drain overnight (or a minimum of 12 hours).
Recycle used oil and drained oil filters at your local
Certified Collection Center. Most auto supply stores are certified to collect
used oil and filters for recycling.
Halloween is an exciting time of the year! The
following are safety and crime prevention tips that
will help make Halloween safer for everyone.
SAFER COSTUMES
•The brighter the better. Always choose bright
colors and flame-retardant materials. Attach
reflective tape to your child’s costume.
•Size it right. Make sure your child’s costume is
loose enough for warm clothing to be worn underneath, but not to loose or
long to cause tripping.
•Skip the masks. A mask can obstruct your child’s vision, especially if it slips
out of place.
•Limit costume accessories. Replica firearms that could be mistaken for
real firearms should be avoided.
TRICK OR TREAT
•Accompany your trick-or-treaters. For children under the age of 12, pin
a piece of paper with the child’s name, address, and phone number inside the
child’s pocket in case you get separated. Carry a flashlight so motorists can see
you.
•Set ground rules. Instruct your child to stay in their own neighborhood,
trick or treat at homes that have porch lights on, and NEVER enter the home
of a stranger.
•Inspect candy and treats carefully. Always inspect the treats first and
discard anything that is not sealed, has torn packaging or looks questionable.
Report to the police anything that appears suspicious. A good rule to follow:
“When in doubt, throw it out!”
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY
Walk safely. All children should walk – not run – from house to house. Guide
your child to walk on the sidewalk, whenever possible. When crossing a street,
always cross at the corners.
Slurry Seal Program
The Slurry Seal and Restriping Program work is nearly complete. Major streets
to be slurry sealed include: Washington Street, Fred Waring Drive, Eisenhower
Drive, Madison Street, Westward Ho Drive, Adams Street, Dune Palms Road, and
Miles Avenue. Many residential streets in the Cove area were also slurry sealed.
Sound Wall Work
The sound wall at Lago La Quinta on Avenue 50 has been constructed and the
landscaping is being planted in front of the wall. The sound wall at Villas at La
Quinta is approximately 60% complete and is on schedule.
City Updates Its Housing Element
City staff is working to complete the latest update
of the City’s Housing Element, and anticipates
hearings before the Planning Commission
and City Council in October and November,
respectively. You can review the latest Housing
Element Update document and associated
information by visiting the City’s website at www.
Here are five tips to help you stay in the black.
Advertise. Advertise. Advertise.
Your first reaction in a slow economy might be to
cut back on advertising, but can you really afford to
go unnoticed? Don’t abandon your marketing efforts.
Instead, look for ways to get more bang for your
buck. Your printer can offer cost-saving approaches
for marketing pieces and direct mail and might match
competitors’ rates. Radio, print, and TV sales representatives
may be more willing to negotiate prices for
frequency. Try alternative online marketing channels
such as email marketing, blogs, and mobile advertising.
Deliver presentations to community business or
social groups, or arrange to offer an adult education
class at a secondary school or local college for free or
a small fee. Speaking can be a great way to build business
recognition, establish credibility, and show your
community how much you know.
Review your budget.
Keep on top of your expenses. If money is tight, it’s
time to cut non-essential expenses from your budget
in order to ensure you have the funds necessary to
pay the utility bills, make smart inventory purchases,
or buy that necessary software update. If you need
to expand your advertising to woo more customers,
look for other areas in which to make budget cuts
to free up the necessary funds. If you do have extra
capital available, this may be a great time to expand
your business and divert extra funds into new endeavors
or a new niche to gain a competitive edge. Since
other businesses may be offering deeper discounts to
increase sales, it may be the right time to make a major
expenditure that will help you to pull ahead of your
competition in the long run. And make sure your staff
with spending authority know the plan and your priorities.
Keep on top of accounts receivable
and payable.
Losing track of invoices? Make sure your 30-day
terms are not being stretched out to 45 days or longer.
Set limits on the amount of credit (if any) you are
willing to extend a non-paying or new customer. Pay
your bills within the proper time frame to avoid incurring
extra charges, but don’t pay so early that you
limit your cash flow.
Take a look at your bottom line.
If your customer base is feeling the pinch and your
sales are declining, raising prices can be a difficult step
to take. However, if your expenses are skyrocketing,
you will need to make changes in your purchases
and/or look for ways to pass part of those costs on
to your customer. Another tactic may be to market
to a more affluent customer base or to focus more
efforts on a particular niche of your business that
brings you the best return. Consider charging extra
for your extras, similar to the way hospitals charge
separately for the tissues, water pitcher, etc.
Consider taking out a loan.
Whatever you do, avoid racking up high interest credit
card debt. If you’ve got a solid bottom line but are
hitting a bit of a dry spell, talk to your local bank or
government-sponsored loan agency about taking out
a business loan. Although it is more difficult to secure
a loan in a tough economy and loan applications will
be scrutinized more carefully, it may be the right thing
for your particular situation. As always, ask your accountant,
local government small business agency, or
other knowledgeable financial professional for advice
and help in putting together, or revising, your business
plan.
salt, olive oil, and blend to a "paste". Remove from blender and fold in the grated
cheese. Boil pasta. Drain and retain a small amount of the pasta water. Mix the pesto
mixture into the hot pasta. Add a little water if necessary. Serve with additional
grated cheese, if desired.
LA QUINTA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Out and about in the GEM of the Desert
If you missed the Mayor’s Cup Challenge Golf Tournament at SilverRock Resort,
you shouldn’t have. Held on the beautiful morning of September 16th, this was a
spectacular event. It could hardly be nicer sitting on the patio at the SilverRock
club house with complimentary food courtesy of Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant, Devane’s
Restaurant in Old Towne and Amore Restaurant on Washington. Coffee was
provided by “It’s a Grind.” The view of what must be one of the most beautiful golf
courses in the United States only added to this spectacular event.
Among the more prominent players (prominent in the City, not in handicap) were
Mayor Don Adolph, Councilwoman Linda Evans and Chair of the tournament John
Peña. Kathy McEntee held court at the “money hole” and, although taking in more
money for the Chamber than she gave out, that was due to the challenge of hole
number three as opposed to any Macavallian intentions on Kathy’s part.
There were over 100 golfers accepting the challenge of SilverRock.
The winners were:
1st place Mayor’s Cup Arnold Palmer’s team.
last place The Desert Radio Group team
Hole #2 closet to string Leven Shurley
Hole #5 crappy drive Mike Vrazabal
Hole #7 out drive the Mayor David Turner
Hole #9 longest putt Kevin Welch, 32’1”
Hole #12 closest to Gamby Cristobal Arostegui 50 yds.
Hole #13 closest to string Pete Aguilar
Hole #14 throw or hit Bo Mooore 1’9”
The night before, there was the “Pink Ball Drop” party at the clubhouse. To participate,
you purchased a pink ball for $15 (or $40 for three balls) with the money
going to the “Mary Kay Foundation” devoted to finding a cure for breast cancer.
Debbie Frazier headed this event. When you purchased your ball, it was assigned a
number. all the balls were taken to a large crane provided by Time Warner Cable,
hovering over the number 18 hole. The balls were dropped from the crane. Those
that rolled closest to the pin or to one of the other markers on the green were
winners. Among the winners were:
Arlene Van Parys who won the “Prestige Golf Package”.
Douglas Motz won a trip to Long Beach.
Old Town La Quinta won a “Glamour Package”
And me! That’s right, I won a limo trip and a $25.00 gift certificate to one of the
Kaiser Grill Restaurants (honestly, there was no fix; it’s too hard to fix the roll of a
golf ball. I can’t even do it with a putter, much less a crane).
If you missed this years Mayor’s Cup Golf Challenge, mark your calendars for
next September! You will get a great day of fun and meet your prominent neighbors.
I predict you will love it.
Speaking of predictions and prominent neighbors, check out your neighbor John
Mackovic’s column in the DESERT SUN every Thursday and Saturday. John for
many years was one of the leading coaches in the NCAA, including stints at Miami
(Ohio), Texas, Wake Forest, Arizona and Illinois. In the pro ranks, he was an assistant
coach at the Dallas Cowboys and later the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. In
the DESERT SUN you’ll see his predictions and his ratings on some of the leading
college and professional football teams in the country. He now lives in La Quinta
and works at Stein Whittington Deniel, Inc., in Palm Desert where he predicts, I
suppose, the trends of the market.
The Chamber sees the downturn in the economy not as a disaster but as a challenge.
The Chamber is setting out to do everything possible (as is the City I might
add) to see that businesses in La Quinta not only survive but prosper. If you live in
La Quinta, we urge you to shop with La Quinta Chamber of Commerce members.
In particular, shop with the advertisers in the GEM. A business cannot advertise
in the GEM unless they are a member of the Chamber. Members of the Chamber
sign an oath to provide the best in service and product.
If you want to participate in Chamber activities, please join us. Membership for
a business is $225 and for a resident/associate/retired is only $149. Contact our
director of sales Anne Blalock at (760) 564-3199.
Now that you are a member of the Chamber, (we assume you joined based upon
the last plug), you may want to serve on one of our committees. You can email a
committee chair and volunteer your services. Don’t be shy; they are waiting for
your call. Our chairs are: Kathleen McEntee, Marketing and Communications
(kmcentee@kmcenteeassoc.com; John Peña, Legislature (jpena1@dc.rr.com); Lee
Osborne, Finance (losborne@psocpa.com); and Debbie Frazer, Ambassador (dlfrazer@gmail.com).
Even if you are not a member, you can come to one of our Mixers. The next one
is going to be held at LG’s Steak House at 78525 Highway 111, La Quinta (corner
of Washington and Highway 111) on October 28 at 5:30 p.m. Here you have food,
a no host bar and a tremendous opportunity to meet friends, shop your business,
and have a good time.
Upcoming Chamber events (you have to be a member for these) include the Breakfast
Network on October 15, 7:30 a.m. at Desert Arc. A Power Lunch on November
12,11:30 a.m. at Amore. At the Power Lunches and the Breakfast Networks
you have an opportunity to sit with your business colleagues around a table of
eight. You circulate your business cards and you make a two or three minute pitch
for your business. It’s a tremendous opportunity to market your business to other
business owners in the Valley. Indeed, there are very few better opportunities for
you to make a one on one presentation that emphasizes the service and quality of
your particular business.
(You may inquire about Chamber memberships by calling at 760-564-3199)
I hope to see you at our next event.
Mortgage con’t.
• Keep detailed written records of every contact you have with your loan servicer.
Put down date, time, person talked to and precisely what was said by both you and
the person on the other end of the telephone.
• You will not get your loan modified without submitting something in writing.
Almost all lenders have long forms they want you to fill out and submit. You must
do this if you expect to get a loan modification. Needless to say, after you have
filled out the form and before you turn it in to the lender; make a copy for your
own records. You may not hear from the lender for some period of time. Followup
with periodic letters, approximately every three weeks. Remind the lender that
they are considering your application.
• Do not forget that if the lender allows you to forego certain payments, that
is only temporary. You will have to make up those payments at some time in the
future if you expect to keep your loan. Therefore, don’t let your arrears pile up or
you will never be able to get out of the hole.
• If you feel that your lender is abusing you in any way or is not helping you solve
the problem, you should pursue your right to legal advice.
