Chairman’s Message
by Linda Evans, Chair, Board of Directors
This is the second issue of our new GEM newsletter.
Did you notice the changes? Did you notice we added
more pages and features and…it’s color throughout?
We’re excited to introduce you to more of what the La
Quinta Chamber of Commerce has to offer to its
members and its community through our expanded
publication. Through our new publications committee, you will continue to see
the GEM enhance its look and information. If you have suggestions for what you
would like to read in the GEM, give our Chamber office a call at 564-3199 and let
us know. If you are not already advertising in the GEM, now is the time to make
the commitment to do so as ad space is filling up quickly. And, with a monthly
distribution of 22,000 homes and businesses in our area – it’s an affordable
method of marketing your business. It works to generate business for the
services offered at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital and it can work for your
business too. OK, that’s my sales pitch for the GEM!
Your Board of Directors held their annual retreat in mid-August to evaluate our
previous years efforts and lay out our goals for the current year. We dedicated
a day to discuss and prioritize what we feel is important to the members of the
La Quinta Chamber of Commerce. We already offer a steady calendar of events
throughout the year (evidenced by the outstanding turnout for breakfasts and
mixers…even in August), and agreed that we could enhance them and
compliment them with a few additions. These additions include the Texas Hold
‘em Tournament scheduled later this month (October 21 st ), a Bowling
Tournament in the Spring (yes, we know there are many of you out there
wanting to show off your talents), and a new signature event in the planning
stages for late Spring/early Summer of 2007…a Car Show & Rally (classic & hot
rods)! So, if poker, bowling, or cars “speak to you”, (sounds like a guy thing), we
welcome you to join our committees and offer your expertise. Your participation
will help to ensure that these new events are as successful as our current roster
of networking opportunities.
What else did we cover at the retreat? We talked about diamonds, emeralds
and rubies. We recognized that many of our members participate and support
the following Chamber functions: GEM advertising; networking events such as
Breakfast Network, Power Lunch, Mayor’s Luncheon, and Mixers; BizNet Expo,
and the Mayor’s Cup Golf Challenge. And, we discussed how we could offer
more value for the investment you make to the Chamber. This is where the gems
fit into the picture. The team mapped out new sponsorship levels that include
diamond, emerald, and ruby. We will have finalized the levels and benefits by the
time you read this article, and you will be impressed at how easy your company
can achieve “gem” status with the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce. With the
money you are currently spending to promote your business through the
Chamber, we encourage you to explore getting even more for your investment.
Additional benefits to reaching gem sponsor levels will include distinct mentions
at key events, website exposure (banner ads and logos), and even free
advertising opportunities in appreciation of your commitment to become a La
Quinta Chamber of Commerce Diamond, Emerald, or Ruby Sponsor.
Give Ruth Finholt, CEO of LQ Chamber, a call today (564-3199) to find out how
your company can shine!

PLEASE... DON’T CALL IT LA KWINTA
By Leslie Lafayette
Going Home, Coming Home
FIRST THINGS FIRST … thanks to all of you who have e-mailed or otherwise
contacted me about the La Quinta Friendship Circle. Seems many of you felt
the way I do…for us full-time residents it is not easy meeting new friends to
hang out with! (Do people over fifty still “hang out,” or by then is it called
“hanging in?”) At the date of this column (first week of September) we are
putting together a gathering and notifying everyone. It’s not too late to come
to a monthly “social” and meet others with similar interests for walks, talks,
dinner, golf, tennis, hobbies, travel, you name it. E- mail me at
cnetwork@aol.com, with your name, phone number and a little bit about you
and your interests. We’ll get back to you and put you on the Friendship Circle
list for the next get together. The thought is a once-a-month general get
together and friends will take it from there.
Speaking of friends, I’m writing this from the Bay Area, where I lived for
many years (in San Francisco and then on the Peninsula.) We have had a
reunion of the high school where I taught, and seeing some former students
who look older than I do – and have grandchildren!- has convinced me that
Life Definitely Marches On, whether we’re marching with it or not. It was great
fun to reconnect with other faculty and “the kids” in my high school English
classes…so don’t ignore invitations to your reunion, go and have a good time,
wear earplugs so the band doesn’t drown out your conversation, and if you
don’t like the way you’re looking, wear someone else’s nametag!
Being in the beautiful cool climes of the Bay Area again has reminded me
of how the fog floats in under the Golden Gate and how the breezes blow
across your neck and cool off your arms and legs as you stroll through an art
show or walk across a parking lot to go to the market. I even wore a jacket
yesterday – in early September! I was born in San Francisco and went to
college in Berkeley and I love it here.
But I find myself missing La Quinta. Really. I miss the (relative) peace and
quiet. It is a priceless commodity, and I hope as we grow we do not lose it. The
constant drone of autos from freeways and thruways is background noise
here in the Bay Area.
I miss room to stretch out. Up here, houses are right on top of each other.
Remember the ad from years ago when one guy opened his medicine cabinet
and found his neighbor on the other side of it? That’s not so far fetched here
… I see disturbing signs of this kind of “stacked up housing” coming our way
in the desert and I hope we draw the line on it.
I miss animals and birds. You aren’t going to see much of that in a city area
– but from my patio I see roadrunners and an occasional coyote, birds and
bunnies, funny black beetles…the desert is alive, and breathing, not yet
covered in asphalt. We could use more trees in La Quinta in our parking lots.
In the Bay Area, where you seldom need shade from a burning sun, trees
grow throughout parking areas. In La Quinta, where – don’t look now but
aren’t we over 100 degrees every day for months?- you can expire in a
parking lot on your way to the grocery store without the branch of a single
tree for respite.
My old friends here are like family, and no matter how long between visits
we fall in together like an old army platoon. We laugh until our sides split.
Being young teachers in the high school trenches bonded us pretty well. But
despite all of that, and the beauty, the water, the fog, the Golden Gate… I
know my home is in La Quinta now. I’m a desert rat for sure. It isn’t perfect,
but it’s as close as I can get…and sometimes the best part about a trip is the
reminder that there is no place like home.
RESTAURANT REVIEW: A TASTE OF LA QUINTA
Fisherman’s Market & Grill – Catch This!
By Felice Chiapperini
Cool breezes, sparkling sunshine and the smell of salt in the air are truly the stuff
of dreams for year round desert dwellers. But dreams can come true. Fisherman’s
Market & Grill brings a taste of the sea to La Quinta and offers a lunch or dinner
escape for overheated residents and visitors.
Upon entering, patrons are greeted by a huge chalkboard which lists the entire
menu. A refrigerator case displays the day’s catch, which is also available for
purchase to take home and prepare in your own favorite recipes. Service here is
casual; you pick from the chalkboard, give your order to cashier, pay and the food
is delivered to your table. A self-serve condiment bar offers a wide variety of hot
sauces, relish, fresh lemon wedges and all the usual seafood accompaniments
such as tartar sauce, cocktail sauce and malt vinegar.
The selection of fish here is almost overwhelming. Standards such as salmon,
halibut and swordfish share the menu with exotic species such as Hawaiian ono,
Fijian ahi and eastern grouper. On my last visit there were also sandabs, orange
roughy, white seabass, Icelandic cod and smoked albacore. Shellfish is equally
abundant on the menu with clams, mussels, oysters, shrimp, scallops, lobster and
crab.
Fisherman’s Grill will charbroil, grill, steam or fry to your liking. The “Lifeboat”
menu features lighter, healthier selections for under 200 calories, charbroiled
without any butter or oil and paired with fresh steamed broccoli and a cool baby
greens salad with a slice of tomato. Fish and chips are a favorite here and there are
half a dozen varieties including cod, salmon and shrimp. The fish tacos can be
made with charbroiled swordfish, salmon, mahi-mahi or langostino lobster. Or, try
the tacos with fried shrimp or calamari. Soups include seafood gumbo, cioppino
and Boston clam chowder.
For starters, there are steamed mussels and oysters, fried clam strips, ahi
sashimi and oysters on the half-shell, just to mention a few.
Fisherman’s Grill offers beer, wine and soft drinks. Wine is served by the glass or
bottle and includes a nice selection of chardonnays and merlots. Fountain soft
drinks come with free refills.
Next time the desert sun fills your head with thoughts of escaping to the
seashore, think about lunch or dinner at the Fisherman’s Grill instead. You will
discover it is faster and easier than a trip to the beach.
Events Committee
By Ken Napper, Modern Woodmen of America
Co-Chair Events Committee and Board Member
The Mayor’s Golf Tournament last month was such a
success. I thought I should write a book on it from my
viewpoint as one of the few NON golfers in the Valley. While
I’m still working on the contents, I think I have the CHAPTER
“Titles” down.
CHAPTER 1 - How to properly line up your 4th putt
CHAPTER 2 - How to hit a Nile from the rough when you hit a Titleist from the Tee
CHAPTER 3 - How to avoid the water when you lie 8 in a bunker
CHAPTER 4 - Using your shadow on the Greens to maximize earnings
CHAPTER 5 - When to implement Handicap Management
CHAPTER 6 - How to rationalize a 6 hour round
CHAPTER 7 - How to find that ball everyone else saw go into the water
CHAPTER 8 - How to relax when you are hitting three off the Tee
CHAPTER 9 - When to suggest major swing corrections to your opponent
CHAPTER 10 - Can you purchase a better golf game?
Wonder if it would sell? If it did, my next book would be on Epitaphs. Thought a good
title might be “Epitaphs to Die For.”
OK, the nonsense out of the way, let me get to the upcoming Chamber activities. Don’t
miss the POWER LUNCH on the 12th. Great new location - AMORE RISTORANTE
ITALIANO restaurant on Washington Street. The MIXER in October is on the 25th and is
being sponsored by OLD TOWN LA QUINTA. Please join us that day at 5:30 p.m.
On your mark, get ready, now play...TEXAS HOLD’EM Poker Tournament at Spotlight 29
on October 21st. Please call the Chamber office to see if we have any spots left. We’re
limited to 84 players. My compliments to RON SALUTE for all his work in organizing this
activity. Don’t miss this, it’s going to be a blast. I’m going as “La Quinta Slim” and will
dress the part. I wonder if I can find my cowboy hat? Next month we’ll spotlight the
Bowling Tournament we have planned for the 1st quarter of next year.
And on that note, on behalf of the Chamber Staff and Board, we wish all a tremendous
October. May all your hopes and dreams be fulfilled.
Membership Committee
By Robert F. Sylk, The Sylk Group
Co-Chair Membership Committee and
Ambassador Chair
Dear Members,
For many of us, the warmth we feel from
continuing to return to Chamber events hopefully
results in a desire for you to do something for our
Chamber and City. We are always pleased and
grateful when our members express gratitude by joining our
committees.
Whether you choose to make a gift of yourself (volunteering) or a
gift from your company, sponsoring an event, it is always very much
appreciated.
But, if you were to ask your children or other close relatives to list
your values and goals, what might they say? Chances are that you
won’t be remembered for the car you drove or the clothes you wore,
but “you will” be remembered for the principles by which you lived
and the causes you supported. You have the opportunity, now, within
your grasp, to make a difference in the lives of others and in the La
Quinta community in which you live and work. Take a moment to
consider the people and organizations you care about the most and
how you would like us all to remember you!
If you are one of many who wish you could do more, please
contact me or Ruth or any of our very capable staff at the Chamber
because the shared experiences and common values nurtured here
link us all in a unique bond for which, ladies and gentlemen, I
personally am extremely grateful and I hope you will be too.
I want you all to know that La Quinta is not only a very special
pearl beyond price, but our Gem of the Desert. Thank you all for your
support of the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce!
CITY SCENE
LA QUINTA POLICE DEPARTMENT
BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS
It’s a busy time of year…our schools are welcoming students back from their summer hiatus. The
La Quinta Police Department wants to take this opportunity to ask parents and guardians to help keep
students safe by discussing the importance of good safety habits. Here are some tips:
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY Teach children to always use a crosswalk and to look left, then right, then left
again before crossing the street. The law states that a vehicle must stop for pedestrians, but
pedestrians must allow it time to stop.
BICYCLE SAFETY Be sure bicycle riders know that they’re part of the traffic flow and should ride on
the RIGHT side of the road and use proper hand signals. They should wear appropriate helmets and
those under 18 years of age are required, by law, to wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet.
VEHICLE SAFETY Teach your family to always buckle up. Older kids
should use lap and shoulder harness safety belts, while younger kids
should be in booster seats and little kids in child safety seats. It is best
for children ages 13 and younger be transported in the back seat of
the vehicle.
SCHOOL BUS SAFETY Parents, please talk to your children about
the importance of following the bus rules: remain seated, obey the
bus driver, and don’t stick your hands or arms outside of the bus.
Bus riders must be taught how to enter and exit the bus safely and
never cross in front of a moving bus. The bus driver has limited
visibility, and children must learn to stay 10 feet clear of any part of
the bus except when boarding. And they must avoid the rear
wheels of the bus at all times.
COYOTES…What You Should Know
A special feature article by the City of La Quinta Animal Control Department
Development activities and human missteps are resulting in the increase of
coyote encounters, both in gated communities and in the Cove area.
Coyote encounters with humans can only be reduced if coyotes remain cautious of
people. Coyotes are by nature fearful of humans and not normally aggressive but,
if given access to human food and garbage, their behavior changes. When people feed
coyotes, they lose their natural aversion to people and become bold and aggressive
The coyote (Canis latrans) is native to California and closely resembles a small German shepherd
dog. Coyotes are extremely adaptable and resourceful and can survive on whatever food is
available. They prey on rabbits, mice, birds and other small animals as well as young deer and sheep.
In urban areas, coyotes often attack people’s small pets (cats and dogs included).
To avoid problems with coyotes, people should follow these guidelines:
• Never feed a coyote – it puts everyone at risk and is against the law
• Put all garbage in tightly closed containers that cannot be tipped over
• Feed pets indoors, pick up leftovers, and store food
• Clear brush and weeds from around dwellings – this reduces protective cover and makes the
area less attractive
• Install motion-sensitive lighting around your home
• Protect children – although rare, coyotes have been known to attack and seriously injure
children; never leave them unattended
• Protect pets and livestock – keep small pets indoors, especially at night
• Use negative reinforcement – if coyotes are present, make loud noises, throw rocks,
sling shots or pellet guns, or spray them with a garden hose
• Be aware that coyotes are more active in the spring, when feeding and protecting their young
If you enjoy seeing coyotes and want a closer look at them, use binoculars. If you ever see a coyote
acting aggressively or attacking people, immediately contact the nearest Department of Fish & Game
office. After normal business, contact the DFG’s 24-hour dispatch center at 916-445-0045.

When it’s Time for the Pink Slip
We can no longer think of the words “You’re Fired” without envisioning Donald
Trump delivering them as he glares across the table at a group of future “Donalds”
in the Board Room. However, there are better ways to go about the process.
By Kathleen McEntee
There are times when an employment relationship will just not work, no matter
ow much training, coaching, evaluation, and counseling time you put into it. If you
ave kept your responsibilities as an employer, and your employer is not meeting his
r her responsibilities, it may be time to deliver the pink slip. Here are eight steps in
etting an employee go.
Seek support. Before firing an employee, review state laws regarding termination
nd consider receiving counsel from a Human Resource professional. Depending on
he nature of the firing, you might also consider asking a lawyer for legal advice.
Act Sooner than Later. Letting a problem employee go is best done sooner than
ater. The longer an employee’s negative actions go unchecked, the more difficult it
s to let go. Set a three month review period for new employees, let the new employee
now that you will be reviewing performance within this time, and do it! If you have
rained, coached, documented and provided warning about performance lapses, and
he employee is clearly not the right fit for the job, it is probably best to end the
elationship.
Plan the Meeting. Be prepared for the termination meeting. Gather your records,
which should include basic information about the employee such as hiring date,
salary, sick time, vacation time, and time cards as well as performance appraisals,
documentation regarding performance, and copies of verbal and/or written
warnings. Be able to outline clear reasons for the employee’s termination.
Do it on Monday or Tuesday. The best time to fire someone is at the beginning of
the day, at the beginning of the week. That gives you the remainder of the day and
week to reassure your other employees that they are not going to be fired instead of
sending them off on the weekend to worry about their own demise. It also provides
time to smooth things over before the fired employee calls them at home to tell his
side of the story.
Get a Witness. If you feel an employee termination will be difficult, you may want
to bring in another manager, a Human Resource person, or other business
professional as a witness to the proceedings to avoid any unfounded accusations.
Be Firm and Fair. Call the employee into your office or conference area and say
you need to discuss something with her. Clearly state that you are letting her go and
clearly state the reasons why. The employee may want to negotiate for another
chance, but remember you have done your research, you have documented and
clearly spelled out performance issues, and you have made your decision and must
now stand firm on it.
Provide Time to Gather Personal Belongings. If the employee is reasonable, allow
some time for him to gather his belongings. Ask if you can assit or have someone else
assist. You will need to determine and decide how much oversight is needed as he
packs up. If an employee is unreasonable, you might want to suggest he return a t
an agreed upon date to pick up personal belongings or to wait while you and another
worker pack them up.
Keep the Proceedings Confidential. While you want to assure your other
employees that their job is secure, do not discuss why you let the employee go. Just
say that you have let the employee go and provided reasons for ending employment.
These pointers can help you through the firing process, especially for employees
with a short employment history. If you have a long-term, solid employee who is
suddenly slipping, use good listening skills to get at the root of the problem, and
develop an action plan for yourself and for the employee to set production back on
track. If you believe the time has come to part ways, document, document,
document, and provide the employee with ample warnings before termination.
The Gem 19
GEM OF THE MONTH
October: Opal or Tourmaline
Opal, the traditional October birthstone, has been treasured by cultures around the
world for thousands of years. Ancient Romans considered opals the luckiest of stones as
their flashing colors were thought to hold the powers of many birthstones within a single
stone. Half a world away, native Australians believed opals were formed when packets
of rainbows fell to earth. Closer to home in Mexico, radiant red and warm orange fire
opal varieties are beloved to this day for their intensity and, some believe, their ability to
spark the imagination.
Though opals are harder than pearls, these singular beauties require a gentle touch.
Wear them best in pendants or earrings, made even more luxurious in
diamonds settings. If you prefer rings or bracelets, choose protective
settings that respect the stone’s delicacy and special care
requirements. Use gentle cleaning methods with your opals, avoiding
heat, ultrasonics or harsh cleansers. Instead, keep your opal jewelry
opulent by wiping it with a soft and damp lint-free cloth.
October’s birthstone alternative is tourmaline, a gemstone better
suited to more active lifestyles. The gem’s name derives from an ancient
word meaning “of many colors” as tourmaline occurs in every color of
the rainbow. Two American locales are famed for gorgeous pink and
green tourmaline: nearby San Diego county and the state of Maine.
California pinks so enchanted the last dowager empress of China that
she imported most of San Diego’s turn-of-the-twentieth-century
production for her personal collection.
Tourmaline is harder than quartz and can better withstand wear in
rings or bracelets. Quality stones can be found at attractive prices
although Paraíba tourmaline, an exotic electric-blue variety named for
the Brazilian region where it’s found, can command tens of thousands of
dollars per carat. Care for tourmaline as you would moderately durable
stones, by washing your jewelry in warm soapy water to keep it looking
lively and aglow.
Happy Birthday, October babies!
CONTENT MANAGEMENT:
Are You In Control of Your Website?
By John Kirkpatrick
Co-owner, Eaton & Kirk Advertising, Marketing and Website Development
You have just launched your new website.
You love the design, you are widely
promoting its address, and you can’t wait
for all the hits to build up. So you figure you
are done with the whole website process and
can just sit back and just wait for the
business to roll in. Right? Wrong!
One of the most powerful aspects of a
professionally designed website is that it is
always a work in progress, responding to
your ongoing needs as they come up every
day. In other words, the best websites are
never finished. They are continually being
updated to reflect the important changes in
the various aspects of your company -
things like price changes, upcoming events
and news stories.
The questions are: how do you handle
these changes, who controls them, and how
much does it all cost? Many web
development firms will offer a monthly
service contract. Like all contracts, these
have their good and bad points; they may
not cover all maintenance items, the time it
takes to make the revisions may vary, and
you could end up spending form time you
are not using. Contracts are good for certain
customers, especially those who do not want
to allocate staff time to their website
maintenance or those who feel they just
don’t have the expertise.
There is another solution, one that
empowers the website owner, keeps costs to
a minimum and guarantees no time delays
in the posting of revisions - it’s called
Content Management. The beauty of
Content Management is that your staff can
make a wide variety of website revisions
with no special training and no need to
learn complex software. All the website
maintenance is done directly through your
internet browser window - like Internet
Explorer.
Content Management comes in two
basic forms: 1) third party software you
either buy or pay an annual fee (as low as
a few hundred a year) which allows basic
access to most areas of your website, or 2)
custom programmed Content
Management sections done by a
professional website developer — this
allows precise control over almost any
function of a website. Both options add
some cost to the initial development of
your website but pay for themselves
quickly by eliminating expensive monthly
maintenance fees.
PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
For restaurants who want to change menu
items and prices quickly, organizations who
need to update events’calendars, firms doing
e-commerce or any company that wants to
be empowered to take cost effective control
over their website, just ask your web
developer these magic words`- “How can I
access Content Management?”
The 18th Annual Holiday Golf Classic pro-am tournament featuring Val
Skinner is fast approaching & is one of the most anticipated golf events
in the Coachella Valley. It will be held December 10, 2006 & has the unique
format of each player having the opportunity to play with a LPGA
Professional. The holiday theme and the beautiful setting at the La Quinta
Hotel & Resort Dunes Course add a final touch of fun. Professionals playing
in this tournament past & present have included: Lisolette Neumann, Jane
Geddes, Sandra Palmer, Vicki Fergon, Meg Mellon, Hollis Stacy, Brandie
Burton, Cindy Rarick, Allison Finney, Amy Alcott, Sherri Steinhauer and, of
course, Val Skinner.
The tournament benefit’s the Soroptimist House of Hope and Hope
Horizons, homes for women with chemical addictions, the Boys and Girls
Club of the Coachella Valley, & other Coachella Valley projects.
Ambassador’s
Spotlight
By Patricia “Trish” Duarte,
d Your Imprint
I’m honored to be a
member of the La Quinta
Chamber’s Ambassador
Committee, and to share a
small part of it with you in
this column.
For the last 5-years, putting
people at ease, introducing
new businesses, gaining
business contacts, and
getting to know fellow
Chamber members were just
some of its obvious benefits.
However, at its very core,
this program confirms my
belief that putting others
needs before your own,
provides a deeper
appreciation of self. As you
may have noticed, this
radiates from the smiles and
welcomes received by all
those involved in the
chamber. Soon you feel that
you are a part of a 700
member family...a part of
something bigger and more
wonderful. The spark of
excitement in looking
forward to those chamber
gatherings provides a
“member” reunion at each
event.
A family has your best
interest at heart, and the La
Quinta Chamber welcomes
you home each month.
Cousin Johnny & Sister Sue
won’t be able to make it, but
I’ll see you at the next Power
Grand Opening / Ribbon
