AISM News Letter
No 1/1/2011
26 th January 2011
Principal’s Comment
Welcome to the School Year
On Monday 558 students from 32
different countries commenced the
2011 school year. This will be a year
where all students can achieve the
best possible learning outcomes and
where our school sports and
performing arts program will grow in
participation and variety of offerings.
There will be greater opportunities for our students to demonstrate
excellence in the school and wider educational community of KL,
as well on the international stage.
My major drive over the next few months will be to simplify school
administration processes, improve parent communication
processes and support the leadership team in developing the three
distinct sub-schools. With this I am working with staff to build a
blue print for our future whilst at the same time focusing strongly
on the present. My simple philosophy is that our students only get
one chance to enjoy the 2011 school year so we need to ensure it
is as productive and rewarding as is possible. We don’t want to
lose sight of the present whilst pursuing a better future.
Once again the 2010 Year 12 and Year 10 results reflect that AISM
is a school of high academic achievers as does our Australian and
International benchmarking results from Junior and Middle school
.We look forward to building on these successes further in 2011.
My fun project over the next few months will be in supporting the
initiatives that are in planning for sport and performing arts
activities. We have many exciting initiatives currently under
development. My message to students is to make sure that they
get involved in all aspects of school life – try a sport, learn to play
an instrument, join the drama group for example. This is the spirit
of international school communities - where many opportunities
exist and where students are active in their commitment to be
involved in school life outside of the regular classroom program.
There will be many opportunities over the next few years for us to
get to know more about each other as we work together to ensure
a satisfying school experience for your family .
Assistant Principal’s Comment
Welcome to the 2011 school year. I am
looking forward to working with students
and parents to ensure that AISM
provides all students with a challenging
and rich learning program.
As the “front face’ of the school, my
door is always open to parents. If I am
not the right person to answer your
questions or assist you with your
concern, I will ensure that the right
person does get in touch with you.
My role encompasses a range of areas and this year I will work
with the school community to enhance “student life”, liaise with the
project team and co-ordinate the scheduling of works for our major
building project in order to ensure that the curricular and cocurricular
program still operates effectively and work with the
Administrative staff to streamline a range of administrative
procedures.
Thank you to all parents for your patience as we try to hurry the
delivery of uniform items. I appreciate your efforts to make sure
your children are wearing clothing that approximates our uniform. I
hope that new supplies will be available straight after Chinese New
Year. I will let parents know as soon as supplies arrive.
Finally, we have introduced a new process for car pick up at the
end of the day. Students who used to wait on the benches in the
area just outside the general office will now go straight to the
covered area outside the pedestrian gate and wait for their drivers.
Teachers and security guards will be on duty to ensure that
students do not wander in to the road. The cards will still be
collected from drivers and given back to students. It is important
that students who are being collected by drivers go straight to the
collection area and do not loiter in the canteen or with friends.
This system was trialled yesterday and it ran very smoothly, so
with full co-operaton from students it will streamline the end of the
school day for all students
Mrs Wendy Gardiner, Assistant Principal
Welcome to what is shaping up to be a great year at AISM.
Mr David Kilpatrick, Principal
New Staff Introductions
Over the next few weeks we will introduce new staff to the school community through the newsletter.
This week we introduce Michelle McQuin who has joined our marketing and communications team in a part time role as a communications
officer. We have asked Michelle to develop and support school wide initiatives to improve communication with parents.
Michelle has over 6 years involvement with the school as a parent and volunteer and will provide valuable insight into this position. Michelle can
be contacted via communicationsofficers@aism.edu.my.
Senior School News
Message to New and Old
In welcoming Senior School students back to school on
Monday morning, I reminded them of my expectations. We
want to treat our students as young adults and work with
them as they progress through their final years of schooling.
I phrased this by talking about living “above the line” rather
than “below the line”. Above the line we take responsibility,
consider others and show ownership. Below the line we blame
others, make excuses and are self absorbed. Over the
coming year students will be „encouraged‟ to live their lives
ABOVE THE LINE.
You only get out what you put in, so make sure that you are
involved in everything and do it to the best of your ability.
Welcome Assembly
Our first Senior School Assembly coincided with Australia
Day and so became an all school assembly. My thanks to
Alana and Sam for doing such a great job in hosting the
assembly. Unfortunately, despite a great effort, neither of
our Senior School teachers (Ms Hurditch and Mr T) made the
play offs in the Trivia competition! The assembly did have a
serious side. Students were encouraged to dress up in Green
and Gold and to make a donation to the Queensland flood
appeal. Tonight I will pass a cheque to MANZA for
MYR3059.75 to help their overall appeal.
Timetables and Subject selections
It was no surprise that on Monday morning I had a number of
students come to see me about their subject selections.
Many students made their choices way back in Term 2 so it is
not surprising that they have changed their mind since then.
To date I have granted most requests for changes. From the
end of this week the process for changing subjects will be
more rigorous. A student wishing to change subjects must
collect a form from Mr Pollock (Senior School Curriculum
Coordinator) which, when completed, must be signed by the
student, the parents, and the teachers of both subjects
(leaving and entering).
Welcome to new staff and students
Welcome to the 27 new students in Senior School. I am sure
that you have had an exciting few days (even confusing at
times). I am also sure that you have been made welcome and
are already making new friends.
Also welcome to the new staff that have joined us this year;
Ms Maree Gibson joins us to teach Business Studies,
Commerce and History, Mr Malcolm McCormick will be
teaching Music but will also be kept busy with the Band and
Ensemble programme, Mr Marcus Coombes will be teaching
Biology, Science and Maths (and of course coaches Rugby).
Mrs Broadbent will shortly be departing on maternity leave.
Her replacement, Ms Gail Robertson will arrive in Week 3.
Mr Ian Martineau, Head of Senior School
School Certificate and Higher School
Certificate Results
Returning families will remember that, late last year, I wrote
about the high academic standards at AISM. My comments
proved correct as we received our 2010 School Certificate
(Year 10) and Higher School Certificate (Year 12) results.
It is important that families understand that our students
(many of whom have English as a second or third language)
are placed alongside every other student in New South
Wales. Even without this consideration, our results are
outstanding. Let us look at some factual information (Please
feel free to share it with friends)
School Certificate (Average across four compulsory subject
areas (78.49%)
There were 29 Band 6 awards (90% or above)
In Science 25% of students (11) scored 90% or
above (Band 6)
In Mathematics 15% (7) scored 90% or above (Band
6)
19 students (43%) averaged over 80% across all
results
The following percentages of students achieved Band 4 or
higher (over 70%) in each subject area:
English: 88.62% (State Average: 80.75%)
Mathematics: 70.43% (State Average: 61.84%)
Science: 93.17% (State Average: 72.78%)
History: 74.99% (State Average: 51.85%)
Geography: 77.26% (State Average: 58.83%)
Higher School Certificate
11 Band 6s (Over 90%)
ESL English exceeded State Average by nearly 10%
Standard English exceeded State Average by over
7%
Legal Studies exceeded State Average by over 5%
7 other subjects exceeded the State Average
These results allowed 7 students to receive ATAR
scores in the 90s
A further
above 70%
10 students received an ATAR score
(With first round offers only being released last week, we
have not managed to talk to everyone about their offers but,
to date, all have been offered selected courses.)
Mr Ian Martineau, Head of Senior School
Middle School News
On behalf of the Middle School I would
like to welcome everyone to the new
school year. We have four new teachers
joining the team in 2011 including Ms
Helen Toner, Mr Marcus Coombes, Mr
Terrence Gallagher and our music
specialist Mr Malcolm McCormick.
These teachers bring a wealth of knowledge, skill and
enthusiasm to our Middle school teaching team. I would also
like to formally introduce myself as the new Head of Middle
School. I originate from Adelaide in South Australia and have
a background in gifted and special education which translates
to supporting all students to reach their full potential both
socially and academically. I have a 15 year old son Mitchell
who has commenced schooling at AISM in Year 10.
I would like to congratulate and welcome our new Middle
School Captains Dashveen Jose, Elsa Baker, Sprite Munday
and Rhiannon Firth. I am looking forward to working with
them on new middle school initiatives in 2011.
I feel extremely fortunate to be involved in such a vibrant
school community and look forward to meeting all the
students and their respective families.
Academic
Diaries and student lockers
All middle school students will now have received their
student planner (diary) and student locker. The expectation
is that students write in their homework from teachers and
that this is signed by parents over the weekend. This diary is
to assist students to develop independent management skills
whilst also offering a medium from which parents and
teachers can communicate. Once a semester I will be
reviewing student diaries to assist those students not
effectively utilising them. Organization and time management
are crucial if your child is to be successful in their schooling
particularly in the senior years. New families are encouraged
to provide feedback to home group teachers on how their
child is settling into school life at AISM.
Middle School Camps
Week 11- All middle school camps (as per School Calendar)
will occur from the 4 th -8 th April 2011. Further information will
be forwarded to you through your home group teachers as
the term progresses.
Studywiz
Our online learning platform Studywiz will be available for all
students from Week 2. This is a medium by which students
can have open communication with staff and fellow students
in a secure learning environment. Further information will be
forwarded through the home room teachers in the next few
weeks. We encourage you to ask your children to share their
work with you through Studywiz.
Mathletics and Spelladrome
In our commitment to develop and improve every student‟s
literacy and numeracy levels we provide two individual online
learning programs for all students. These programs will also
commence in Week 2 and your child will be able to access
these programs both at school and at home. Further
information will be available on Studywiz by Week 4.
Homework
As we place a great deal of value on homework the
expectations are that students and teachers will follow the
guidelines set out in the Middle School Curriculum Handbook.
Homework times:
Year 5 - 1 hour
Year 7 - 1.5 hours
Year 6 - 1.5 hours
Year 8 - 2 hours
Term 1 Middle School Assemblies
Middle school assemblies will be held every Wednesday
Week B according to term school calendar. Please note there
is no assembly in Week 4 due to student elections for House
Captains. All assemblies will be in the Auditorium from 9.30-
10.15am. All parents and family members are most welcome to
attend.
Chinese New Year
A reminder that school will officially be closed on Thursday
and Friday the3th/4th February. “Gong Xi Fa Cai!” “Wan shi
ru yi”
Students taking additional leave during the Chinese New Year
are required to submit their notes to homeroom or admin
office by Tuesday the 1st February 2011.
Middle School Locks
We have investigated appropriate locks for the middle school
students. We would like all middle school students to have a 4
digit resettable padlock. Both Yale and Colex brands are
recommended but not
compulsory. This lock will
follow your child through their
schooling to Year 12. The
resettable locks are required
as we are moving away from
padlocks with keys. Please
ensure your child has a padlock
at school by Week 3 to ensure
security of their personal
belongings.
Ms Kylie Booker, Head of Middle School
Junior School News
I would like to welcome back returning families and extend a
warm welcome from the Junior School staff to all of you.
This year is shaping up to be a fantastic year with many and
varied opportunities on offer for the students. I would like to
welcome our new staff in the Junior School, Ms Wendy
Benner as a Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Pietsch as a Year 1
teacher, Mr Damien Pietsch as a Year 3 teacher and Ms. Vicki
Harrison as a Year 4 teacher.
By the end of the week you all should have received a term
overview outlining what the students will be learning this
term, a class timetable and a letter from your class teacher
explaining the class routines and procedures. Please contact
the class teacher if you have any questions about what is
happening in the classroom.
I would like to let you all know that the Junior School
assemblies take place on Wednesday period 6 (2.20pm –
3.10pm) of each Week B. That is Wednesday week 2, 4, 6, 8
and 10.Parents are invited to attend these assemblies. Each
week we give out class awards and a class presents an item.
Our first assembly will have 4G presenting an item with 4W
presenting the following assembly.
I would like to remind parents to label everything that your
child brings to school, including items of school uniform as
already some children have misplaced some of their
belongings. We have a new lost and found point in the school
and it is located in the Year 3 and 4 eating area. If your child
has misplaced something please check the lost and found. All
labelled items found will be returned to students each
afternoon.
At the beginning of each year we invite volunteers to act as a
class parent. The class parent assists the teacher with
organising class events and attends meetings at the school to
discuss matters affecting the children. More information can
be obtained from the class teacher if you are interested.
If you have come into the school this week you may have
noticed that the down stairs area has had a major facelift.
We are also looking at changing a number of routines for
parents and students in order to better use this space. More
information will be coming home about this in the very near
future. My office is now located in the downstairs area so
please feel free to drop in and see me if you have any
questions or concerns.
Performing Arts News
I would like to wish everyone a very Happy
New Year and welcome to 2011. I hope
everyone had an excellent holiday and
welcome to our new students and families.
The Performing Arts at AISM are in a state of growth. In
2011 we are going to be able to offer more and greater
opportunities for students to be involved in Performing Arts
activities and performances.
I would like to thank Mrs. Sarah Carol Shun and her staff for
undertaking the enormous task of re-organising the costume
and props rooms. These resources are used for productions,
assembly presentations and other activities throughout the
year. Anyone wishing to borrow these resources can contact
me for assistance.
I am looking forward to an exciting year in the Performing
Arts as we continue to offer students a diverse range of
experiences.
Mr Jon Suffolk, Coordinator Performing Arts
From the Music Room
We are looking forward to an exciting and fun year in Middle
and Senior School Music. The major direction we will be
taking this year is in instrumental music performance. This
will start initially with the creation of two ensembles as ECA‟s
and be followed soon after with other initiatives.
Rhiannon Ward, Year 5G has kindly donated a signed copy of
this very interesting Young Adult novel. Polaris Rising is co
written by her sister, Australian Author Melanie Blanch.
Team Building Day
Welfare News
Welcome back! I hope that you had a restful holiday. Team
building day will be held on 9th of February (Wednesday,
Week 3). The day is an opportunity for all students to work
with different members of their house and with different
teachers in order to build greater understanding and
cooperation within the whole school community. The day will
start at 8.50 am and finish at 3.10pm. Students will be in
Sports uniform with their house shirt. The canteen will
operate as normal.
As some of you may have noticed I have become a bit bigger
during the holidays! I will be taking Maternity leave at the
end of week 4 until the beginning of Term 3. In my absence
Mrs Stacey Warren will be fulfilling the role of Welfare
Coordinator.
If you have any questions or queries, please email me at
annawood@aism.edu.my
The first group is the Middle School Beginner Band. This will
take place on Tuesdays and is open to students from Years 5,
6 and 7. Students do not have to have any prior experience.
As part of the selection process, interested students will try
and test instruments and be placed on the instrument which
is most appropriate for them. Instruments will include flute,
clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, trumpet,
trombone, bass guitar, drums and percussion. Students will
be provided with Band books and interactive CD‟s to enrich
the experience. There are also instruments available to hire
for those who do not have an instrument. Students will be
expected to attend this group for the whole year and be a
part of various concerts and events held at the school.
Tuition is in a group context and students may also choose
individual tuition to further their skills. Success in learning an
instrument and getting the most of the Beginner Band
requires the student to practice regularly and we seek parent
encouragement and assistance in monitoring this.
The second group we will establish this year is the AISM
Orchestra. We are seeking to mobilize the musical talent
here at AISM into a striking new ensemble. This ensemble
will rehearse on Thursday afternoons and is open to students
from 5 -12. Instruments include all string, woodwind, brass,
percussion and some bass guitar and keyboard. Students
should be on or above level 2 for entry into this ensemble.
The group will perform music from a wide repertoire including
classical, jazz, film and rock.
If you have any questions please see Mr. McCormick in G5.
Sports News
Sport at AISM has certainly started with
a bang in 2011, with the great news of our
acceptance into the International Schools
Athletics Conference (ISAC), which will
kick off in the second half of the school year. This will mean
our students will have the opportunity to compete weekly
against other International Schools in various sporting teams.
ISAC will allow us to showcase the many talented students at
AISM who will now have the chance to compete at this high
level. Please keep watching this space for further information
as we start to organize our teams during the first half of the
year. The 2011/12 competition will include the Over 15 ages
only and move into the younger ages on its success.
During the holidays there has been some refurbishment of
the gym and we have the new PDHPE/Sports Office area.
This has become the home of Mr Agg, Mr Gallagher, Mr
Nasyural, Ms Wilkins and Mr Wilkins. Outside the pool end of
the gym is the very important Sports Notice Board,
containing important information on upcoming events and
team news. Please take the time to regularly check the latest
news updates.
Over the next month we will be very busy at a number of
carnivals in a range of sports:
Barracuda Swim Squad Trials – Monday 31 st –
Wednesday 2 nd Feb. at 7:30am. Mr JX Chan
U15‟s Rugby 10‟s – 12 th February at the French
School. Mr Coombes
Triathlon – 12 th February at The Alice Smith
School. Mr Baynes
confirmed in U11 Soccer, U11 Kwikcricket and U15 Basketball.
The U15 Netball team has selection trials on Friday 28 th
January in preparation for a visiting school from Beijing.
They will also be bringing their U15 Rugby team who will
compete against us in a tournament at ISKL. The AISM
Badminton Academy will start the year with some
demonstration games and coaching clinics during ASA (After
School Activities) and Saturday afternoons.
On Wednesday 23 rd March, AISM will be holding its Annual
Cross Country Carnival in the school grounds and adjoining
BluWater Estate. All parents are welcome to come along and
support your students. There may even be a job for you on
the day, if you‟re interested.
The teaching staff this year has many, many years of
coaching experience across a large range of sporting pursuits,
which will provide our students with the guidance required to
instill values, sportsmanship and skills required in the
enjoyment of sport.
The growth of sport at AISM has brought a number of
changes within the schools community. A commitment across
the board from not only staff and students but also parents
will be necessary to support these new initiatives. Whether it
be dropping off or picking up from training or assisting in
coaching, we will be relying on all stakeholders to commit to
each team.
I am personally looking forward to a busy year ahead and the
opportunity to be a part of AISM‟s growth in it‟s sporting
pursuits. We have a great chance to show the international
schools that we are up to the task and can play with the best.
Phil Wilkins, Sports Coordinator
Welcome from AISM Health Services
AISM is dedicated to quality education and a component of
this is the health and safety of our students. Our health
clinic has a full time nurse. Mrs Mac comes from Scotland and
this is her 4 th year at AISM .The Health office is to provide
care for ill students first aid and health education and to
support students with medical concerns. Mrs Mac also gives
talks on hand washing and other health related topics in the
assemblies and in classrooms.
The health office also serves as a resource for health
related questions you may have. We also keep up dated with
the Ministry of Health Malaysia about the latest guidelines
about HINI in the school setting. We also print health
related articles in the newsletter. In an emergency the
nearest hospital is Serdang Hospital and if you are new to
Malaysia then on a quiet Sunday please get to know the
location of this hospital in case your child has to be sent
there. Mrs Mac always travels with the student in the
ambulance and will stay with the student until the parent
arrives. Please remember wellness enhances learning and a
student who has enough sleep and eats a healthy breakfast
followed by lots of water at school, learns better in the
classroom.
Mrs Mac, School Nurse
External Scholarship Recipients 2011
involvement. They cover all fees and a variety of other
inclusions for the students to enter Year 11, continue to Year
12 and to sit the Higher School Certificate.
“Applicants are expected to have excellent academic
performance across the breadth of subjects rather than in
one or two subjects. The emphasis is both on excellence of
results and consistency of performance. It is a once-in-alifetime
experience for Malaysian students keen on
experiencing life and learning as a part of a multi-cultural
community in an international environment,” says David
Kilpatrick, Principal of AISM.

After School Activities (ASA) News
I would like to extend a warm welcome to all the new AISM
families joining us this year and welcome back to all our
retuning families. I am Steve Warren and I will be the After
School Activities Co-ordinator for 2011. After School
Activities (formally known as ECAs) will begin in Week 3
(Monday 7 th February) and will predominately run on semester
basis depending on the chosen activity. It is an expectation
that all AISM students select at least one After School
Activity per semester.
Selection for After School Activities has formally begun and
will close on Monday 31 st January; this is to allow time for
After School Activity roll‟s to be compiled before Chinese
New Year. Students can access a detailed list of offered
activities and the selection forms online via a link on the
school website or through our online learning platform, Study
Wiz. For all new families and for those who have difficulty
accessing the internet, hard copy selection forms are also
available for collection from your Head of School. These
forms must be returned to your Head of School and must be
signed and dated. The preferred method of activity
selection however, is online. Some activities have limited
numbers so please complete the selection forms ASAP to
ensure that students have the greatest possible opportunity
to participate in their desired After School Activity. It is
very important that families carefully read through the
After School Activities booklet that contains full details of
all activities and the requirements of the program before
making selections.
One of our aims this year is to maintain a wide variety of
available activities and to increase student access to these
activities. One way in which the school has already addressed
this is by moving Malaysian Studies classes into timetabled
lessons during the school day. This will give those students
more choice for their After School Activities. Another
change this year is the running of Senior School sport on
Monday and Middle School sport on Wednesday, on a term
basis. This is to ensure we provide a variety of sporting
activities for students to engage in and also to align our
school more closely with the sport seasons of other schools in
the ISAC (International Schools Athletics Conference)
league. This will provide greater opportunities for interschool
competition in the future.
I am very much looking forward to working with you all this
year and if you have any queries or concerns please feel
welcome to contact me.
