Principal’s Message
We are currently undertaking the final
detail planning for 2013. This week we
advised students and parents at our Year
4 classes that from next year onward Year
5 will be integrated into the Junior School.
This decision was taken after a thorough
evaluation of the social, emotional and
learning needs of our typical Year 4
students. Our belief is that for students of
this age that their needs are better met in a primary school
learning model, than in middle school approach. Year 5
students in 2013 will be located in the new building and
will receive the same curriculum as current Year 5’s but
delivered in a manner that is more conducive to the learning
at that age.
In 2013, our Middle School will become part of a new Middle
and Senior School structure. This will be overseen by Wendy
Gardiner who will become Assistant Principal (Head of Middle
and Senior School). Ian Martineau will continue in his role
overseeing the pastoral and academic programs for Year 9 –
12. Part of his role will be leading the establishment of our
new Senior Study Centre. Ms Kylie Booker will continue in her
role overseeing the pastoral care and learning of students in
Year 6 – 8 and providing continued school-wide leadership
in programs for exceptional learners. The learning model,
pastoral programs and student welfare in the middle school
will be the same in 2013 as in the present case. The uniform
will remain the same and their co-curriculum activities (such
as the Drama Production) will remain the same also. What
will be different is that the administration, communication,
quality assurance processes and student support services
delivery will be managed in one administration unit across
years 6 to year 12. These services will be delivered from
a new school administrative and student services centre to
be established on the ground floor of the current classroom
facility. Our belief is that these changes will simplify our
administration processes, improve communication and lead
to higher levels of service delivery to students and parents
at the school.
As stated in previous messages from me, the intention is
to maintain a sense of one school and one communityconnected
by common purpose and goals and by a shared
understanding of and commitment to quality experiences.
Students from junior, middle and senior school will continue
to share play time and lunch and will come together for
whole school celebrations and events. As our enrolment
will increase gradually over the next few years we will work
hard to ensure that we maintain our strong sense of one
large community, but we will also start to establish smaller
tribes within that community so as to ensure that every child
knows their teachers well and is cared for and nurtured in
a holistic manner. This is to ensure that no child will ever
get lost in the crowd at our school and that all students
have opportunities to discover and realise their full
potentials.
Next week we are bringing two of the short listed
candidates for the new position of Head of Junior School
to the school for two days of interviews. I will keep you
updated as we progress through this selection.
Year 12 Trial Examinations
Next Wednesday 22nd August, Year 12 begin their
Trial HSC examinations. In most subjects this is their
final internal assessment and is a ‘dress rehearsal’ for
the real thing, next term. To add to the authenticity,
the exams will be run exactly as the HSC exams. We
have asked our nominated Presiding Officer, David
Questel, to act as the main supervisor. Year 12 have
been taken through the equipment requirements and
other protocols to make sure that they are ready.
Drama, Art and D&T showcase
My thanks to Mr Suffolk, Mrs Goonting, Mr Ellis and
Mr Kola for their efforts in Thursday’s showcase. Of
course this is just the tail end of a long process of
support, cajoling and advice that has occurred over
the past 10 months. The Major Works (and the Drama
students) now head to Singapore for marking by
representatives from the Board of Studies.
University Entrance
It is a busy time for Year 12 as Tertiary applications
open for Australian Universities. Mr Broadbent has
taken students through the processes required for
both Australian and other Universities around the
World.
Mr B’s Careers Corner
It’s been a very busy few weeks for careers and pathways
at school. On the 7th of August, AISM hosted a mini
university fair organised by the company Frontline.
All students from Years 10 to 12 had an opportunity
to visit the fair, which was held in our stunning new
library. We had representatives from Lim Kok Wing,
Taylor’s University, The
ONE Academy, Manipal
International University,
the Academy of Interactive
Entertainment, University
of Adelaide and University
of South Australia.
Our Year 12s are currently working on their university
applications and to assist them with that, I have been
running after-school clinics so that students can discuss
their options and seek advice. These clinics have been
a great success so far and will continue throughout
this term.
Our Year 10s should be handing in their Careers
Research Project permission forms on Friday this week.
It is the plan to get all the Year 10s placed by the end
of this term. I would like to thank those in the school
community who have offered to take students for work
experience placements; however, I am always looking
for more. If you think you can help, please email me at
Car Drop Off and Pick Up Concerns
There has been a few isolated cases recently involving unsafe driving of cars during school arrival and pickup
times. This has included some drivers reporting incidents of tail gaiting.
Whilst the school has no jurisdiction over the road use outside of the school compound, I would ask that we
follow safe driving practices in and around the school to ensure the safety of our students and other school
community members.
There has also been some cases of dis-respectful verbal exchanges by some of the paid drivers used by families
- aimed at our security staff.
I ask for your cooperation in assisting us to ensure a safe and respectful school drop off and pick up. We would
appreciate that you reinforce to your driver regarding appropriate conduct and monitor their compliance to these
reasonable expectations.
Middle School News
Again another two weeks of student engagement and
achievement. Some of our Year 8s have ventured
off to Sabah for the annual Matilda trip and we look
forward to hearing all about their experiences in the
next assembly which will be on Friday, 24th August
at 9.00am in the auditorium. I had the opportunity
in the last two weeks to visit some Perth schools that
have been leading certain initiatives in ICT particularly
with the use of IPADs and MacBooks. It is important
to understand the focus is still very much about
the teaching and learning. Technology is a tool to
assist teachers to deliver learning and enhance and
complement existing teaching practices. Currently in
the Middle School we have access to thirty IPADS that
we are utilizing in a number of ways. Some examples
include the Year 8 peer support students who have
been undergoing training so that they will be able
to teach and mentor the Kindy students in creating
their very own IBook. The Spanish students have
been using creation APPS to build vocabulary and
sentence structure skills. This term, I will be working
on developing a trial to determine the effectiveness
of IPADS in early education as we are currently
researching future options in the Junior school.
Maths Homework - Whilst students are given specific
homework from their teachers, parents can support
their child’s learning by encouraging their children
to log on to Mathletics and complete 10 minutes of
curriculum based challenges each day. Each child
has their own unique program and should access this
regularly and, as a guide, complete two concept bars
each day.
Science Expo - Next week the Year 6 & 8s will be
showcasing their science investigations between 4.00
to 5.00pm in the Auditorium. I would like to invite
all parents and friends to attend to support your
child’s learning. There will be a letter home this week
explaining the details of the event.
Model United Nations Conference
Ashwen wins Best Delegate Award
From the 3rd - 5th of
August, seven students
from Middle and Senior
School attended the
Selangor Model United
Nations
(SMUN)
conference at Taylor’s College, Subang Jaya. Model
United Nations has been a program in which we have
been involved since 2006 and we have taken part
in numerous conferences in Kuala Lumpur over the
years. SMUN was a real first for Malaysia, as it was
entirely organised and run by students. It was an
impressive feat and it was a wonderful opportunity
for our students to hone their debating skills and to
gain awareness of the world around them.
Representing the nations
of North Korea, Nigeria and
Guatemala, our students
debated a host of topics
ranging from stabilizing
the Middle East in light
of the Arab Spring to the
empowerment of women. Our students did the school
proud, and they thoroughly enjoyed their experience.
The highlight of the conference, was that one of our
delegates, Ashwen Parthiban, received ‘Best Delegate’
award for his committee. MUN is never about winning
awards, but this was a real achievement for Ashwen
and a first for an AISM student at a MUN conference
in Malaysia!
If your child would like to get involved in Model United
Nations, please contact Mr. Broadbent.
Junior School News
Junior School Production is almost upon us and the classes have
begun their preparations for this annual event. It is a production
that showcases many of the things that students have been learning
in the Performing Arts lessons. This year the production is going to
be an evening event and is shaping up as something very new and
different to what we have done in the past. I don’t want to give too
much away, but please mark the evening of Wednesday the 5th of
September in your calendars. Many parents have been supporting
the classes with their preparations and I would like to thank them
for their time and efforts.
In a previous newsletter, I have mentioned that the teachers have
been working toward implementing an inquiry based approach to
teaching in the classroom and I thought I would share with you some
information about the differences between an inquiry classroom
and a more traditional classroom.
In general, the traditional approach to learning is focused on
mastery of content, with less emphasis on the development of skills
and the nurturing of inquiring attitudes. This traditional system of
education is teacher centred, with the teacher giving out information
and the students are the receivers of information, the teacher is
the dispenser. Much of the assessment of the learner is focused on
the importance of “one right answer.” Traditional education is more
concerned with preparation for the next grade level and in-school
success than with helping a student learn to learn throughout life.
In general, the use of resources is limited to what is available in
the classroom or within the school. Use of technology is focused
on learning about the technology rather than its application to
enhanced learning.
Library News
This term Junior School library sessions are
focusing on Australian authors such as Jackie
French, Bob Graham and Andy Griffiths. This is
a lead-up to our annual Book Week during Week
10B which will highlight the 2012 Children’s
Book Council of Australia’s (CBCA) shortlisted
books. The CBCA books also focus on quality
Australian literature for older students and
include well-known authors, such as Scot
Gardner and Ursula Dubosarsky.
New Books
We have recently processed a wide selection of
books from various genres.
Thank you to Mrs Naomi Sutcliffe, Mrs Grace
Rao and Mrs Shamsiraini Al Atabi for spending
time putting protective covers on these books.
Lunchtime in the library
This week Fergus Wong has organized a
very successful ‘Check Mate’ tournament for
all age groups. The students played chess
using traditional chess sets as well as iPad
applications.
Denise Miller and
Rod Gardiner
Inquiry classrooms are open systems where students are encouraged
to search and make use of resources beyond the classroom and the
school. Teachers who use inquiry can use technology to connect
students appropriately with local and world communities which
are rich sources of learning and learning materials. They replace
lesson plans with facilitated learning plans that account for slight
deviations while still keeping an important learning outcome in
focus. They meet on-target questions with, “How do you suggest
we investigate that question?”
Assessment is focused on determining the progress of skills
development in addition to content understanding. Inquiry learning
is concerned with in-school success, but it is equally concerned with
preparation for life-long learning.
This Co-Curricular Program commenced this term with
27 students choosing to take part. The production this
year is “The Little Prince”, based on A. De Saint Exupery’s
novel. This production will be held in Term 4.
SHORTSTUFF FILM FESTIVAL
Short Film Competition for
students aged 7 to 18 years
The Australian International
School (AIS) in Vietnam will
be hosting the 2012 Saigon
Student Film Festival, known
as ShortSStuFF. This year,
the invitation is being sent
to all international schools in
Vietnam, local Vietnamese
schools and for the first time to
all the Schools in the Australia
International Schools Association (AIS Hong Kong, AIS
Malaysia, AIS Indonesia, AIS UEA and AIS Singapore).
The competition requires participants to create a short
film of a maximum 5 minutes on a theme. This year’s
theme is “Dreams”. Students aged 7 to 18 years old
are invited to participate, with three age divisions and
six different categories. The submission can be done
online or submitted on youtube after completing the
entry form which is available from the website www.
saigonstudentfilmfestival.com and emailing the entry
form to shortSStuFF@aisvietnam.com. The screening
evening will be on 19 September, 2012. More information
From the Music Room
Annual Music Showcase, Tuesday 13th Sept
This week many students from the
Junior, Middle and Senior Schools
are auditioning for a spot in the
annual Music Showcase which
will be held on Thursday 13th
September in the evening. The
standard of students auditioning
has been high so far and the
concert is set to be a great one!
Please mark this date in your
diaries. The concert will also include performance from
the Vocal ensemble, Young Voices, AISM Orchestra,
AISM String Quartet, Jazz Ensemble and the Year 5
Concert Band. Results of auditions will be posted on
Friday 24th of August.
Music Practice
At this time of the year when students are busy
preparing items for Showcase, classroom assessments
and International Day, it is timely to think about the
routine of music practice. Students should make the
time to practice daily and this practice should include
some scales and technical work as well as the solo and
ensemble music. As our music practice rooms are near
completion we will soon have another venue for music
practice in free time during the school day.
Year 5 Band
The year 5 Band program is moving on quite quickly
now. Many students have passed the beginner phases
and are now working on playing with fluency and
developing their tone and strength. Fee invoices for
this term will be sent home shortly with your son/
daughter and these fees may be paid at the accounts
office. There are some students who are continually
forgetting to bring their instrument. These students
are in danger of falling behind in their ability to play
in the band and develop their own skills and ability. A
reminder of band class days follows:
5G: Week A Tuesday and Friday, Week B Monday and
Friday. Friday is always Band Day.
5W: Week B Tuesday and Wednesday, Week B
Wednesday and Friday. Wednesday is always Band
Day.
Vietnam Music Tour
We are pleased to announce that the Vietnam Music
to go ahead. Confirmation and further information will
Healthy Feet
Symptoms of feet problems
Wearing shoes that fit properly and support your feet is
vital to avoid sore feet and to prevent or alleviate many
common foot problems. It’s also important to choose
footwear that will minimise your risk of falling and slipping.
When choosing shoes, you need to consider the activity,
the surface and your need for support.
Appropriate footwear is vital for playing sport
Young athletes and school children who play sports require
footwear that provides cushioning for shock absorption
during running and jumping, and stability for side-to-side
activity. Sports shoes should bend easily at the ball of the
foot, and the back of the shoe should be supportive and
cradle the heel to prevent injury.
Shoe inserts and insoles
Shoe inserts can increase comfort and support, and
improve foot posture. Insoles bought at pharmacies and
sports stores are generally made from soft materials to
one generic arch shape. While they may be adequate for
some people, they do not address specific problems and
are not moulded to your foot. Some insoles are designed
purely to redistribute body weight away from painful
areas of your foot.
Podiatrists prescribe insoles to help change your foot
posture. A change in foot posture may help to ease foot
pain and prevent injury. A cast of your foot is usually
taken in plaster and the insoles are tailored specifically
to an individual’s feet. Because these devices are ‘one of
a kind’, they are often more costly than those purchased
over the counter.
Alternate your shoes
Alternating your shoes from one day to the next will help
to vary the posture of your foot and distribute the load
over a greater range of joints and muscles. It will also
allow your shoes to dry out and so reduce the growth
of bacteria. Alternating sports footwear allows the foam
cushioning more time to ‘rebound’ (come back into
shape). This may help prolong the life of your shoe. You
should see your doctor or podiatrist if you are worried
about your child’s feet or gait.
Problematic symptoms may include:
• Abnormally shaped toes
• Ingrown toenails (that persist or are painful)
• Bunions or other deformities
• Stiffness in the foot
• Limping
• The child complains of pain while walking, or favours
one leg over another when walking
• Severe in-toeing or out-toeing
• Flat feet beyond the age of five years
• A sudden change in the way your child walks
High heels can cause significant physical stress
High-heeled shoes place the foot into an unnatural position,
affecting both the foot and your posture. Prolonged
periods of walking in high heels can place unnecessary
stress on your back and neck, and result in permanent
postural changes. It is not uncommon for women who
have worn high heels for most of their working lives to
find themselves in pain when they start to regularly wear
flat shoes.
The high-heeled shoe also places greater pressure on
the forefoot, which can cause a build-up of calluses. The
pointed toe places significant pressure on the toes, which
can cause permanent deformity, including bunions, claw
toes, corns and thickening of the nails.
Where to get help
• Your doctor
• Paediatrician
• Podiatrist
• Physiotherapist
school shoe and sports shoe, the healthier your child’s
feet.
Parents’ Association Information
Hi Parents,
Thank-you to those who made time to attend our last
meeting and it was great to see some new parents joining
us for the first time.
The next big event on our calendar for this term is
International Day - Thursday, 30th August. As we have
done in the past, the Parents’ Association will be providing
a taste of Foods of the World. However, this kind of event
cannot be successful without support and assistance from
across the whole parent community. This is a great day to
showcase your culture and give us a glimpse into the type
of food you eat. We have a few groups of parents so far
- Team Australia, Team Malaysia/Indonesia/India, Team
UK and Team Japan. We are looking for more helpers
for a European-themed table, any other cultural groups
who would like to get together and, of course, anyone
who would be able to help in any way (not necessarily
cooking). You can contact us through our e-mail address:
pa@aism.edu.my.
Preparations for Trivia Night are also well under way!
There has been lots of information going out in different
forms for this fun-filled evening, so purchase your seats
and let all those seemingly unimportant facts in your brain
surface. While the theme for the evening is the Olympics,
the questions will cover a wide range of topics (I hope so
anyway because I didn’t pay that much attention to the
games!!). The date is Saturday, 8th September.
Our new noticeboard is up and full of useful information
now. It is located in the office breezeway, near the
stairs that go up to the library. If you’re heading in that
direction, take a couple of minutes to check the notices.
There is information on the above two events and there is
also a buy/sell section. Any items for this section can be
e-mailed to us.
Our next meeting will be on Friday, 7th September - see
you there!
Book your place now for Trivia Night
(a fun general knowledge quiz night for adults)!
To be held on Saturday 8th September at 6.30pm in the Auditorium, AISM.
The dress theme for the evening is “The Olympics” although questions will be on a whole range of subjects so you
do not have to be a sports expert. Come dressed in gear for an Olympic sport of your choice – or maybe your table
would like to come dressed as an Olympic team! Please bring your own beverages and food for the evening (it won’t
be available to buy on the night).
Purchase your seat for the night from the Kindy Lunch area just inside the car park gate entrance to AISM on
Tuesdays 8.45am, August 14, 21, 28, September 4
Fridays 3pm, August 17, 24, September 7
If you aren’t able to make it at these times, please complete the form below with the correct money, put it in a sealed
envelope and place it in the box marked Trivia Night at Junior School Reception. We will confirm your seat bookings
via e-mail.
Prizes! Calling all business business leaders!! Trivia Night is a great opportunity to showcase your products and
services to our school community and their networks. Why not join other local businesses and donate a gift voucher or
product which can be used as one of our fun prizes? In return for your support, your business will be promoted on the
evening. If you, or anyone you know, would like to get involved, please contact Emma at pa@aism.edu.my
