Commodore’s
Comments
D
ecember has
arrived with all the holiday
activities at the club. Hopefully
you enjoyed the Halloween party
or cruise and were able to share time
with loved ones over the Thanksgiving
holiday.
For Joanie and I, the November Commodore’s
Roast was certainly a highlight
for the year and could not have
been more fun. “Mr. Las Vegas”, Rod
Wells, and master of ceremonies, Byron
Hanke orchestrated a tar & feather free
evening of roasting & toasting with the
assistance from numerous members.
Fortunately memories were short and
many of this year’s Commodore faux
pas went undiscussed. A resident poet
was discovered as Cliff Stevens delivered
a touching limerick aimed directly
at the Commodore and First Lady.
Karin Denman supervised the preparation
of a fantastic Italian lasagna dinner
for a capacity crowd. As if that wasn’t
enough, Karin joined husband Bruce
Padget and Mari & Dave Latimer to
sing their new hit single, “Torn Between
Two Vessels”. The fab four will
reportedly have an album out soon.
Nancy MacGregor then honored your
Commodore and First Lady with the
coveted Two Drawer Award. The Two
Drawer Award is actually quite special
in that it is only awarded every 75 years
and is made to the Commodore in office
upon completion of a galley remodel.
This year’s award was made
special by inclusion of a practice set of
forehead stacking donuts for the First
Lady. Joanie apparently excels at stacking
donuts on her forehead, an event
she won at this year’s Dolphin Yacht
Club Ladies Dinner. Thank you to all
who helped make it such a great evening.
Somewhat sadly, the Roast was a reminder
that our year is nearly over. A
year as Commodore at Portland Yacht
Club is truly shorter than a New York
minute. It seems like only yesterday
that Joanie and I were the anointed
ones receiving all the attention associated
with the change in command. Our
PYC family could not have been more
gracious and supportive during the
year. We are especially grateful to the
Committee Chairs, Club Officers,
members of the Board, past Commodores
and the Club Staff for all their
work and guidance with the policies,
activities and events which differentiate
Portland Yacht Club from other social
organizations and make us so much
more than just another moorage on the
river.
Much has been accomplished during
2010. PYC enjoys an exceptional clubhouse
that now includes a beautiful
galley capable of supporting all club
events and activities. Our parking lot
improvements were finished with the
seal coat and fresh striping that were
completed during the summer months.
The moorage upgrade continued on
track with this year’s installation of 410’
of new concrete marginal walk. The
displaced walk is being relocated to I
row, replacing sections that have
neared the end of useful life. Electrical
service to D row is being replaced so
that power service is safer and more
reliable. PYC is also in the process of
finalizing quotations for dredging of
the outstation. These improvements
represent a major capital outlay for
PYC and have been completed without
special assessment to the members.
Credit is due to the generosity and hard
work of club members, the wisdom of
our previous leadership and committed
club staff and management.
As Commodore, the end of the year
brings both a sigh of relief and reflection
upon the future. Our incoming
Commodore and First Lady, Rod and
Judy Wells will do an excellent job in
2011 and will be supported by outstanding
Officers and Trustees. Joanie
has determined that I will need to start
counseling soon to help adjust to life
after a year in the “bucket”. She is concerned
that going to the back of the
queue at club events, paying for drinks
at the club bar, competing for parking
spots and actually working on the boat
when we are at the club will be a difficult
adjustment for me. I have tried to
tell her that it is a small price for having
had the opportunity to serve as Commodore
at PYC and that it will all work
out as long as she buys me plenty of
the little blue tickets.
Thank you for all your support and if
you are so inclined, save me a place in
line.
the annual Halloween bash on
October 30. After a scrumptious dinner
of roast pork and trimmings, yams,
green salad and chocolate cake with ice
cream, prepared by Laura Mack and the
kitchen staff, members danced away
the evening to recorded music.
Kudos go to Bruce and Pam Wiedemann
for their gruesome graveyard on
and bats hanging from the ceiling,
created a suitable Halloween at-
recognition is given to those who have
made significant contributions to the
yachting community. At this year’s dinner, the
local sailing community raised their glasses and
awarded the 2010 OCSA Sailor of the Year to
PYC member Terry Johnson.
Terry has organized and run the Sunday races
during the months of October through February
for the last two winters. The Sunday races provide
practice time for crews, and encourages new
racers to see what it's like to race around the
course.
mosphere. Julie Hinkley transformed
the bar area into a flickering depiction
of a “hot & fiery place“, using sheer
black fabric to shroud the windows and
paper flames to flutter up out of a barrel.
The Parrs turned the sign-in area
into the “gates of heaven” with white
drapery and puffy clouds.
Special thanks go to LeeAnn Snyder
and MaryAnn Nitchie, who worked for
hours on table decorations and settings.
Diane Burns Foster and Ruth Parr also
helped with tables. Skip Nitchie was
one of the “heavy lifters,” assisted by
Manager’s
Report
T
he Christmas
Ships will be passing by PYC
on December 10th and 17th.
This year there is not a cookout scheduled
for either of those days. We will
be serving hot dogs, chili and Christmas
cookies on the 17th for $5.00 this
year. Please reserve your party ahead
of time. We will be restricting attendance
to a maximum of 10 for each
member. Last year we had to turn
away members because of the large
parties. The ships usually arrive about
7:30 pm.
We will be dredging the outstation this
season. Bids are out and we will be
letting a contract soon. The office will
be letting you know when the outstation
will be closed during dredging. It
will happen before February 28th.
Our staff wants to thank you for your
holiday donations again this year. We
will be handing out their share at our
staff holiday luncheon.
I want to thank our Commodore and
first mate Nick and Joanie Johnson and
all of our committee members and volunteers
for a fantastic year. We
couldn’t have done it without them. It
is this spirit that makes this club special.
Have a great holiday season.
PYC Grand Prix Regatta
T
he final regatta for 2010 was hosted by PYC. October
9 th and 10 th were forecast to be poor weather but
our luck held and it was sailing at its best. Here are
Yacht Club, a once-a-year transformation.
Your ballroom became a graveyard with the help of Bruce
Wiedemann. A human trapped in a giant spider web and an
embalming station for ghouls brought the graveyard to life –
or afterlife. The fabulous table decorations were done by our
very own Mary Ann Nitchie. What artists we have lurking in
Ruth Parr decorated the sign-in area as the entrance to
probably amused. In any case, all of the spirits were consumed
with glee.
We really must do this again next year.
