Dear Collector, 

In what seems like the blink of an eye, another philatelic year has flown by for collectors of the United 

Nations stamp programme. To end on a positive note, we are excited to issue new stamps for two of our 

most popular series - Coin and Flag and Endangered Species. 

On 10 October, we introduce 12 new stamps to our Endangered Species collection. Artists Sara Menon, 

Fernando J.S. Correia and Emily S. Damstra present us the amazing world of nocturnal animals. From 

the Flying Fox to the Long-beaked Echidna, these amazing artists have captured the unequaled qualities 

that make these animals unique and special. Their protection is critically important as the United Nations 

joins the international community to safeguard species from over-exploitation. To learn more about the

To close out the philatelic calendar, UNPA is proud to release the seventh edition of our well received 

Coin and Flag series. These 24 stamps help us all appreciate the diversity of UN membership and its 

goal of maintaining international peace and developing friendly relations among nations. We know they 

will look great in your collection. 

As we say farewell to the 2013 collection, we’re pleased to give you an advanced look at our 2014 

Programme of Issues. We are very excited about the wide range of subjects scheduled to be issued

As part of the renovation project for the General Assembly Building 

at United Nations Headquarters in New York, the UNPA Stamp 

Shop has been relocated to a temporary Visitor's Centre in the 

Dag Hammarskjöld Library on the south end of the campus. Due 

to security limitations, visitors are not allowed into the Centre 

without prior notice of arrival. To schedule a visit to the UNPA 

Stamp Shop, please call 001-212-963-7698 (or 1-800-234-8672) for 

access instructions. A picture ID will be required for entry. 

As of the Fall 2014, the access to the revamped UNPA Stamp shop

2013 ENDANGERED SPECIES 

On 10 October 2013, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) 

will issue a set of 12 stamps depicting endangered species. These will be 

the twenty-first set of stamps in UNPA’s multi-year series Endangered 

Species. The series was launched in 1993 to highlight the need for the protection 

of endangered species throughout the world. For this year’s Endangered Species 

stamps, UNPA is featuring the wonder of nocturnal animals. 

The Designs 

The US$ 1.10 stamps depict the following endangered species:

The Artists 

Fernando J.S. Correia (Portugal) is a biologist 

who holds a MS degree in Animal Ecology. 

He specializes in Illustration and Scientific 

Communication. 

As an Assistant Lecturer in the Department 

of Biology at the University of Aveiro, he was 

responsible for the re-introduction of Scientifi c 

Illustration discipline in the Portuguese Higher Education. He was also 

a pioneer in digital techniques applicable to the scientific illustration 

field in Portugal (1998). 

Mr. Correia is currently the head of the Scientific Illustration Laboratory 

where he teaches and is responsible for the overall coordination of the 

Training Course in Scientific Illustration and the Exhibition ExpoDBIO 

Gallery. He is responsible for more than 75 intensive Science Illustration 

courses (Portugal and abroad), and was co-founder and first President 

of GNSI (Guild of Natural Science Illustrators) Chapter - Portugal. He 

has written more than 85 publications as single authorship including 

“Mealhada - natures unique” (2011) and “Paleoart - fossils that come 

to life” (2012) and 30 as co-author, including articles and books, both 

national and international editions. 

Mr. Correia is an active member of the Association Européenne des 

Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques AEIMS (Europe) and the Guild 

of Natural Science Illustrators / GNSI (USA). He was one of four 

Portuguese invited to participate in the renowned book “The Guild 

Handbook of Scientific Illustration” (Elaine Hodges, 2nd ed., 2003), 

among other books. 

Mr Correia has participated in more than 70 exhibitions worldwide. 

His artwork has been honoured with several awards and has been part 

of private and institutional collections worldwide. To view more of his

Emily S. Damstra (Canada) is a natural science 

illustrator who draws and paints zoological, 

botanical, anthropological, ecological, and 

paleontological subjects. Her illustrations may be 

seen on interpretive signs in museums, zoos, and 

natural areas; in a wide array of books, magazines, 

and journals; at educational and commercial 

websites; and on over a dozen coins by the Royal Canadian Mint. She 

has a Master of Fine Arts degree in science illustration and her works 

have won awards in the juried natural science exhibits of the New York 

State Museum (Focus on Nature) and the Botanical Artists of Canada. 

Emily has always lived in the Great Lakes Region, where time spent 

gardening, hiking, and reading fuels her deep appreciation for the local 

environment. She lives in Southern Ontario. To view more of her work,

Sara Menon (Italy) got an academic degree in 

Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Mantua in 

2008. She currently lives in Aquileia (Italy) where 

she works mainly as a freelance illustrator with 

museums, publishers and researchers. She usually 

works with watercolors and pencil renderings, 

paying close attention to the details of the subjects 

she depicts. 

In 2002 she started to work as a natural science illustrator, teaming 

up with an Italian forensic scientist, producing detailed plates for his 

publications. 

In Milan, thanks to IED (European Institute of Design) she had the 

opportunity to meet popular Italian illustrators, who taught her the 

methods and the techniques used in natural science illustration. 

Ms. Menon has worked with Italian and French publishers, like Il Prato 

(Padua, Italy) and Christophe Chomant éditeur (Rouen, France). 

Among her teaching experiences, in 2012 she had the opportunity 

to give a class on traditional techniques in the course of Biomedical 

Visualization at UIC in Chicago. 

Ms. Menon is involved with the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators 

and exhibited in 2011 and 2012. This is her first assignment with the

The New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders of single mint stamps and souvenir sheets issued in 2013 will be released on 

10 October 2013. The albums are printed in full colour and provide information about each issue. The mint stamps and souvenir sheets 

are not affixed inside the albums, as mounts are provided for this purpose. The Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders will also be 

available with the affixed and respectively cancelled stamps. 

It should be noted that the 2013 Endangered Species series and 2013 Coin and Flag series stamps WILL NOT be included in the individual New 

York, Geneva or Vienna annual collection folders. They are contained in their own separate album. 

The last day of sale of the 2011 New York, Geneva and Vienna annual collection folders will be 10 October 2013.

cachet, send self-addressed envelopes to the address below, affixed 

with UN-New York stamps only (UNPA-Geneva and UNPA-Vienna 

stamps will not be accepted). The envelopes will be imprinted with 

the requested show cachet and returned through normal mail channels.

COMES TO BERLIN AGAIN! 

On 12 and 13 October 2013, the 5 th International Stamp Fair Berlin will 

take place in the Messe Berlin am Funkturm (Berlin Fair at the Radio 

Tower), Hall 9 together with the Coin Fair Numismata. Opening hours 

are on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9:30 a.m. 

to 3 p.m. 

UNPA will be represented with a sales and information stand and will 

offer a white card. The imprint on the card shows the Berlin Fair with 

the radio tower, the Berlin bear is depicted on the cancellation. Both 

designs were created by the Austrian artist Hannes Margreiter.

SINDELFINGEN INTERNATIONAL STAMP FAIR 2013 

The 31 st Sindelfingen International Stamp Fair will take place from 

24 to 26 October 2013 at the Sindelfingen exhibition center, Germany. 

Opening hours are Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 

Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free! 

UNPA will be represented with its own sales and information stand, 

issue a white card and offer a special cancellation. The designs 

were created by the Austrian artist Prof. Adolf Tuma. The imprint 

on the white card shows the Sindelfingen townhall, the exhibition 

cancellation reflects part of the logo for the 750 th anniversary of the 

City of Sindelfingen. 

6 AND 7 DECEMBER IN VIENNA: NUMIPHIL 2013 

The International Collectors Fair Numiphil 2013 will take place 

on Friday, 6 December from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, 

7 December from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Kursalon Hübner, 1010 

Vienna, Johannesgasse 33. Admission free! 

UNPA AT THE 67 th SALON PHILATÉLIQUE 

D’AUTOMNE IN PARIS 

From 6 to 9 November 2013 the United Nations Postal Administration 

will be represented at the 67 th Salon Philatélique d’Automne (Autumn 

Philatelic Fair) at the “Espace Champerret“ in 75017 Paris, France, 

where it will be offering a white card and an exhibition cachet. Both 

designs were created by the Austrian artist Hannes Margreiter and 

feature the famous Eiffel Tower. 

UNPA will be operating a special post office with a special cover 

featuring the famous Austrian composer Johann Strauss jr. and a 

special cachet with the “Donauweibchen-Brunnen“ (Little maid of 

the Danube-fountain) in the Wiener Stadtpark, both designed by 

Prof. Adolf Tuma. Only United Nations stamps in euro denominations 

will be cancelled with the special cachet. The blank cover (Code 

No. 728.3762) can be ordered by using the order form 4/2013. 

A white card and a souvenir cachet (designed by Hannes Margreiter) 

will be offered as well. The design of the card shows the Kursalon 

Hübner, the show cachet depicts a drinking fountain in the Wiener 

Stadtpark. 

The blue card for Veronafil, the white card Numiphil as well as the 

cancelled special cover Numiphil 2013 can only be ordered with the 

next order form 1/2014. 

UNPA PARTICIPATION AT VERONAFIL IN ITALY 

The 121 st Veronafil will take place from 22 to 24 November 2013 at the 

Quartiere Fiere di Verona, Padiglioni 10-11. UNPA will only be present 

on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 

6 p.m! 

The United Nations Postal Administration will be represented with 

its own sales and information stand and offer a blue card and an 

exhibition cachet. Both designs were created by the Austrian artist 

Maria Schulz and feature the Teatro Romano di Verona.
