MRP funding. In 1982, the Dyracuse<br />
Mound Recreational Area <strong>of</strong>ficially opened.<br />
Since then thousands <strong>of</strong> riders, on motorcycles<br />
and ATVs, have enjoyed everything<br />
the area has to <strong>of</strong>fers.<br />
Today, the 240-acre park is a dream<br />
for <strong>of</strong>f-road enthusiasts who want to take<br />
a break from long distance trail riding. The<br />
park is named for its most prominent terrain<br />
feature. Atop the mound, an observation<br />
tower provides an awesome panorama<br />
<strong>of</strong> the area. The park has two<br />
motocross tracks, a 10-mile enduro trail,<br />
two ATV tracks, a track for children, a mud<br />
bog area, a shelter, picnic tables, a playground<br />
and restrooms with hot and cold<br />
running water. You can spend a whole day<br />
or more at the park, testing your skills and<br />
riding over the varying terrain. The park<br />
draws all types <strong>of</strong> riders, from beginners to<br />
experts.<br />
To this day, the park is funded by the<br />
State <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wisconsin</strong> and operated jointly by<br />
the Town <strong>of</strong> Rome and the Rapid Angels<br />
Motorcycle Club. Several annual competitions<br />
are sponsored at Dyracuse, including<br />
motocross, hill climb events, and a harescramble.<br />
Many roads are open to ATV use in<br />
the Town <strong>of</strong> Rome. They are marked with<br />
ATV route signs or directional arrows.<br />
<strong>Ride</strong>rs must stay on the routes. Additional<br />
information, including maps <strong>of</strong> ATV-designated<br />
routes and park information, is available<br />
at the Rome Municipal Building or<br />
Pritzl’s Trading Post.<br />
If by day’s end you haven’t had<br />
enough time in the saddle, the Wood<br />
County ATV Area, with about ten miles <strong>of</strong><br />
looped trail, is located about twenty minutes<br />
northwest <strong>of</strong> Dyracuse Mound, just<br />
four miles west <strong>of</strong> Port Edwards near the<br />
intersection <strong>of</strong> Hwy 54 and Cty G.<br />
For accommodations, you’re only thirteen<br />
miles south <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wisconsin</strong> Rapids<br />
where you’ll find plenty <strong>of</strong> hotels and<br />
restaurants. If you’d rather camp, Deer Trail<br />
Campground (715/886-3871) is just six<br />
miles to the north; just over the<br />
Adams/Wood County line on Cty Z. They<br />
<strong>of</strong>fer 165 total sites, all with water and<br />
electricity. Ten miles south <strong>of</strong> Dyracuse on<br />
Hwy 13, Roche-A-Cri State Park (608/339-<br />
6881, www.wiparks.net) <strong>of</strong>fers 41 family<br />
campsites.<br />
<strong>Wisconsin</strong> Rapids is home to one <strong>of</strong><br />
the largest papermaking plants in<br />
<strong>Wisconsin</strong>. The NewPage mill <strong>of</strong>fers tours<br />
on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays<br />
at 10am (715/422-3789 for reservations).<br />
They’ve got a paper machine longer than a<br />
city block. On Friday nights in summer, you<br />
can catch some car racing action at the<br />
Golden Sands Speedway (715/423-4660).<br />
The Rainbow Casino in nearby Nekoosa<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers blackjack, poker, roulette or slots<br />
