Dear HuntonBrady,
The last issue of Sketches
people and projects from
our first two decades of
1947 - 1967. This time
We had a wealth of
Stories Up at Florida Hospital
New Patient Tower
• A Physician's Guide to Medical Office Buildings
A major milestone was met this June with the
topping out ceremony at the new Florida
Hospital 15-story Patient Tower under
construction in downtown Orlando.
Danny Gordon, Associate
Principal and an expert on the
design and construction of
medical office buildings
(MOBs), was recently asked
by Central Florida Doctor
magazine to write a
physician's guide to
developing and designing
an MOB. Danny gave readers
some great advice about
construction costs, designing
for healing environments and
green initiatives, and building
a knowledge base of the local
commercial market. Read
Danny's tips from the article.
A topping out is a ceremony held in the AED
industry when the final beam is placed at the
top of a large building. It means we've reached
the top, but there's still a lot of construction
work to go. Usually the beam is signed by the
folks involved in the project, and sometimes a
tree, tree branch or American flag is placed at
the top of the building. The origins of this
ceremony are obscure, but it's an important
marker on a project's road to completion.
We are currently conducting user group tours
(hard hats and all), whose mission is two-fold:
to continue building excitement for a project
which has spanned five years, and to let users
become familiar with the physical space to
confirm the original design intent. The project
remains on schedule for completion in 2008.
• Trammell Crow/CB Richard Ellis Orlando HQ
Opens Downtown
Our talented
interior
designers
recently
completed a
new
corporate
office for
Orlando's Trammell Crow Company, one of the nation's leading
developers and investors in real estate.
The 13,500 square foot space consists of 70 employees on the 19th
floor of the new Plaza mixed- use office building in downtown Orlando.
The new office is a clever balance between urban edgy and
elegant. Workstation layouts are organized as a series of villages
featuring workstations, informal huddle rooms, and a large village
work table area for each department. Partially exposed concrete
building columns allow the building structure to enhance the character
of studio space, and are paired with more refined materials like
Venetian plaster.
"State of the art technology was a high priority to Trammell Crow,"
said Interior Designer Kristin V. M. Brown, IIDA. "The executive
conference rooms have Polyvision Room Wizard scheduling
systems mounted outside. This system allows users to see which
rooms are occupied, schedule meetings and even download and email
captured screen images projected during meetings."
CB Richard Ellis Inc. recently announced plans to buy Trammell
Crow to create a Fortune 500 real estate services company.

• Killarney Elementary School Goes Modern
We're
giving
Killarney
Elementary
School in
Orlando a
new,
modern
look. The $10.5 million project consists of renovations of existing
buildings and a new 40,000 square foot addition that includes a food
service building, administration building, two- story classroom
building, play pavilion, staff and visitor parking, and bus loop. The
contemporary building will complement the existing school campus
and brings notable upgrades in design and technology. We are working
in association with Mateu Architects.
• St. John the Evangelist Debuts New Parish Life
Center
Parishioners are delighted with
the beautiful new Parish Life
Center we designed for St.
John the Evangelist
Catholic Community in
Viera, Florida. The 31,000
square foot multi-purpose,
800 seat sanctuary building is
Phase I of a 20-acre long range master plan HuntonBrady developed
for the new parish and the Diocese of Orlando.
"The new center's mission-style
exterior delicately balances a
contemporary interior that
incorporates traditional
liturgical elements with modern
architecture, and a
technologically advanced
acoustic system," explained
project architect Thomas
Hagood, AIA. The multipurpose
sanctuary center also houses a 120 seat chapel ornamented
by stained glass panels, a kitchen area, ten meeting/class rooms, and
administration offices. A dramatic entry portico and fountain serve as
an extension of the prefunction areas and provide additional meeting
space.
• Ronald Pedonti Joins Us as Director of Interior
Design
He's a legend in the interior design
industry around these parts. Few
folks know more about corporate
interiors in Central Florida than Ron
Pedonti, IIDA, so we're thrilled that he
has joined HuntonBrady Architects as
our new Director of Interior Design.
His 30+ years of broad-based
experience in Central Florida extends to
hospitality, corporate, retail, municipal,
healthcare and financial projects. Ron
was interior designer of the Orange
County Downtown Library renovation,
which received an Orlando American
Institute of Architects (AIA) Award of Excellence. Welcome aboard,
Ron.
• Chuck Reports From EDC Leadership Mission to
San Diego
Chuck Cole was among 70
Orlando business leaders
invited on the Metro Orlando
Economic
DevelopmentCommission's
annual Leadership Mission
last month. This year's
delegates met with city leaders
in San Diego to compare our

two regions and learn best practices from their biotechnology,
transportation and educational systems.
"Of particular interest to our firm and other delegates was learning
best practices from the people behind San Diego's famed life
sciences and biotechnology cluster. Our EDC group had exclusive
behind-the- scenes tours of the Salk Institute (designed by architect
Louis Kahn and pictured here), Burnham Institute for Medical
Research, and Kalypsys BioPharmaceuticals," Chuck said. The next
step is to put lessons learned into action. For instance, the group
learned how important bolstering Orlando's professional service firms
(such as architecture, legal, and accounting) will be to accommodate
growth in the biotech industry.
HuntonBrady Architects is actively involved in designing biotechnology
projects throughout the state, including the new University of Florida
Biomedical Sciences Building in Gainesville.
