Touch of Evil
wonderful is he goes back to this woman that he probably knew thirty years
ago and she can’t even recognize him, he’s so dissolute. Great line, he says,
“To read my future for me.” Then she says, “Your future’s all used up.” That’s
a great line. [chuckle]
It turns out to be true.
Oz: Absolutely. She knew it. And he knew it. He knew the game was up
when Vargas accused him of planting. He knew the game was up and he
started going downhill immediately. To me that movie was about him, the
dissolution, and what he used to be or could’ve been with her. I think that
was pretty great.
How has your perception of the film changed over time?
Oz: I just love it. Every time I see it I never get tired of it. By seeing this, really
studying it, yes, I did realize more. What struck me this time was how
the relationship between him and Marlene Dietrich was so key. It’s almost
that she represented the youthful core of him when he was not a bad guy. I
think that this viewing really hit that home to me.
