The Soft Skin 257 Are there any homages to it in your work at all, overt or otherwise? LaBute: No, I don’t think so, not in the way like there are in Friends & Neighbors, where there are literally scene cards from Chloe in the Afternoon on the wall of the restaurants and the posters on the wall of one of the apartments. That era of film has been influential, but there’s nothing directly lifted from this. Have you ever met anybody connected with the film? LaBute: No, never have, no. Never had any direct connection. You know, Françoise Dorléac was lost really early in her life, in a quite horrible way. She died in a car accident somewhere on the road between Nice and Cannes. It was a quite horrible, fiery crash, where she couldn’t get out of the car, that kind of thing. And she was like twenty-five. She was twenty-two when she did The Soft Skin. She looked older than her years, I think. Yes, yes she does. LaBute: I think it’s the time and the makeup and everything; everyone sort of looked older than they were. In a good way, you go, “Gosh, twenty-one, it’s hard to believe.” But yeah, I don’t know any of those people beyond just admiring their work. [Director of photography Raoul] Coutard, beautiful cinematography, he’s still out there. I don’t think he works anymore, but I have seen interviews with him fairly recently. But yeah, I think everybody was just at the top of their game there, and Jean Desailly in particular, he was primarily a theater actor. He did not do a lot of film work. I think Truffaut wanted truly to have someone who the audience would not know, and he could then much more easily fall into the story. And I just thought he was a great choice. As an adult, what do you see as your initial attraction to it? LaBute: I think all the things that attracted me are still there, but I have a greater understanding of life, of love. And one of the great aspects of it, and we didn’t touch on it at all, is Lachenay’s feeling for his child. You can see how much he loves his daughter, Sabine. Some of the freest moments, the film really slows down; it’s amazingly crisp, just even the pace at which
258 Neil LaBute Lachenay moves around in his literary world. The opening scene is him rushing home to get his things and head off to the plane. He’s constantly rushing from place to place to be adored briefly by this group or to say his important thoughts on Balzac. But there are moments where he stops, and he listens to Molière with his daughter and one of his questions is “Before I go, can I see my daughter?” He has a definite love of his child. He understands that pure kind of love; he’s able to comprehend. And that having children, you understand how important they are, and that’s something that you leave behind—far more important than these papers he’s writing or these lectures he gives.
