Kevin Smith
Slacker
For director Kevin Smith, Richard Linklater’s Slacker was the spark. Quite
simply, seeing Slacker was the encouragement he needed to believe in and
pursue his own career as a filmmaker. Smith, of course, would add his own
classic to the indie canon with Clerks just three years later.
“I viewed [Slacker] with this mixture of awe and arrogance, where I was
amazed at the movie, because I’d never seen anything like it and it was so
original,” Smith says. “The arrogance comes in when I’m sitting there going,
‘Well shit, if this is a movie, I could make a movie.’”
