Pete Docter
Paper Moon
The connection between Paper Moon and Pete Docter’s work isn’t immediately
apparent—until you get Docter talking. What Docter values and
admires most about Bogdanovich’s road movie is character, and the relationship
between adults and children. Paper Moon left its mark in Docter’s
films, as he talks about how the relationship between Ryan and Tatum
O’Neal in Paper Moon influenced unlikely friendships in both Toy Story and
Monsters, Inc. (Unlikely friendships have become a hallmark for Docter,
who won an Oscar for Up, which teams a curmudgeonly, childless senior
citizen with an energetic Asian boy.)
Docter also expresses an ardent admiration for Bogdanovich’s use of
long, steady shots with complex interactions and caches of subtle storytelling.
He says, “It has a similar kind of minimalism to camera theatrics. . . .
[Bogdanovich] tries to make the camera as invisible as possible.”
