Arthur Hiller
Open City
Roberto Rossellini’s Open City, a World War II drama set in German-occupied
Italy, caught Arthur Hiller at a sensitive time—just as he was leaving the military
after the war. Its impact on him was palpable, partly because it opened
him to an experience of war that he had not dealt with as a bomber pilot.
Though best known for his comedies (and the popular drama Love Story),
Hiller talks about the power of Open City and its effect on him: “It just
hit me. I think part of it was having come back from the war, so to speak,
although I didn’t face the kind of things the characters faced.”
