Austin Chick
Kings of the Road
The film that changed Austin Chick, as this book goes to press, is almost
impossible to find in the United States. Though the film’s director, Wim
Wenders, is an acknowledged master, not all of his films have made it stateside,
which is a shame.
Of Kings of the Road, Chick says, “It spoke to me in a way. I had a very
personal experience with the film, partly because I was in this phase of my
life where I was aimlessly wandering.”
Kings of the Road
1976
Directed by Wim Wenders
Starring Rüdiger Vogler, Hanns Zischler, Lisa Kreuzer, Rudolf
Schündler, Marquard Bohm, and Hans Dieter Trayer
How would you describe Kings of the Road to someone who has never
seen it?
Chick: I haven’t seen it in probably about fifteen years, but what I remember
of it is that it was emotional. It’s about two guys who meet—one of them
seems to have walked away from his former life, and we don’t really know a
whole lot about what he was up to. He meets a man whose job it is to drive
around fixing projectors in movie theaters, and the two of them embark on
this aimless journey together.
