at Turner’s Finale

Everett’s Comcast Arena was 

empty and dark on Wednesday, 

September 7, but across the street, 

Turner’s Dining and Spirits came 

alive, pouring music and lights into 

the streets of downtown Everett. 

Twenty-year veteran Karaoke Host 

Steve Cushman, Sing-Along Northwest, 

was in top form as he played to 

a packed house. 

Frank was getting himself 

psyched up to sing in the big karaoke 

contest finale. It’s been weeks of qualifying, 

but it all came down to this performance. 

On his way up to the mic, 

he commented on KJ Steve’s killer 

showtime shirt; “That shirt is oddly 

cool… I need one of those.” Indeed, it 

was a cool shirt, and seemed to propel 

Steve into a persona that suited an excitable 

audience. The room was filled 

with singers and supporters. Christi 

and her staff were ecstatic about the 

turnout, and kicked it into high gear. 

They’re accustomed to being busy at 

Turner‘s, especially before and after

The Evergreen State Fair has 

been a family tradition since 1908. 

It all began downtown Monroe, and 

moved to it's present location in 1945. 

Every summer, 194 acres are 

jam-packed with attractions, vendors, 

shows, and everything in between designed 

to attract over 700,000 patrons 

annually to the State Fair. 

This year's concerts included 

Cheap Trick, One Republic, and The 

Band Perry, to name a few. The winner 

of this year's hard-fought Evergreen 

Idol karaoke contest earned the honor 

of being the opening act for The Band 

Perry, singing the National Anthem 

followed by two songs of their choice, 

and walking away with $1,000 cash!

drew thousands of potential winners to 

many locations throughout the Puget

He promised us an exclusive interview 

once his journey was complete. Let’s see 

what adventures he has to share! 

Sammy, how did you originally hear 

about the contest that eventually got you on 

television in front of millions of people? 

The same way I typically hear 

about all these events, through your 

most excellent, and local NW Karaoke 

Guide. 

Where did this exciting journey begin 

for you? I began the qualifying process at 

the Waterwheel Lounge in Ballard. 

Was all the taping live during the 

show? We performed and ABC taped 

it in front of a live studio audience at 

the various House of Blues locations

The Gems were one of 

the best Northwest rock 

bands in the early 60's. 

Now, after nearly 50 years, 

they are reunited and playing music 

again! 

The current band members are 

Larry Loney, Duane Gusse, Ron 

"Buzz" Overman, Paul Wheeler and 

Jim Reid. They have scheduled a single 

performance in Seattle at 88 Keys in 

historic Pioneer Square on Sunday, 

October 9th from 5 to 9pm. For online

In the summer of 1960, The Gems 

started taking music seriously and 

gave 100% to make the band a success 

in the music world. They played 

local dances in the Walla Walla and 

Eastern Washington area from 1960 

to early 1962. By the summer of 1962 

they were booking with popular singers 

and musicians during their Northwest 

tours, including The Ventures, Jan 

and Dean, Johnny Burnette, Dorsey 

Burnette, Donnie Brooks, Johnny 

Tillitson, Bobby Bare and Jerry Lee 

Lewis. 

When they first began learning 

to play music and make appearances, 

they would perform The Ventures 

music. Ironically, they ended up touring 

with them for several months. The 

Gems (Jim, Larry, Paul and Ron -

became The Ventures opening band 

for their gigs. When The Ventures 

came on stage for their two 30-minute 

performances, Ron (Bass), and Larry 

Larry Loney, Duane Gusse, Ron “Buzz” Overman, Paul Wheeler, Jim Reid 

(Drums) stayed on stage and played 

with them, making up their standard 

rhythm, lead, bass guitar and drums 

instrumentation. Overman tells of 

numerous fans voicing discontent 

when they saw 

only two of the 

real Ventures 

on stage, but 

quickly forgot 

about that once

Nagle's Big Apple 

until 1965, when 

the band finally 

broke up. 

Ron Overman 

went on to fame with Don and 

the Goodtimes, writing and singing 

their hit song, "I Could Be So Good 

To You". Don and the Goodtimes was 

formed after Don Gallucci’s exit from 

the Kingsmen in early 1964. They 

more than held their own with the 

many great bands on the 1960s Northwest 

scene.

All five band members are excited 

to be back together and pick up where 

they left off in 1965. The Gems are 

now playing all the songs they were 

playing back in the early ‘60s. Don't

first Seattle performance together as 

a group in over 40 years! You can bet 

there will be many local Northwest 

rock legends and celebrities attending 

this exciting event.

final weekend to strut their stuff and 

go for the gold. A Formal Evening provided 

the attire for the Emcees Larry 

LeBlanc, Clay Young, and Bob Justice. 

Bob and Clay, are quite the comedians. 

It was amusing to watch and listen to 

them poke fun at each other throughout 

the evening. 

The show opened with Sammy 

Vijarro showing the contestants how 

it's done, and the break entertainment 

was provided by Take 27, featuring 

Larry LeBlanc, Bob Justice, Clay 

Young, Mary Younger and Dana Fox 

singing some amazing five-part harmonies. 

Miss Chari LeBlanc and 

Makayla Stokkes wowed the crowd 

with their singing and dancing prowess 

during extra break times and kept 

everyone thoroughly entertained. 

The judges this year included 

past Evergreen Idol winners, Chris 

Aymes, last year's Evergreen Idol 

winner and current 2nd place winner 

of Karaoke Battle USA, Sammy 

Vijarro, along with several other local 

talents including Matt Standerfer, 

entertainer and performer. 

Karen Knapp, longtime local 

karaoke hostess and singer, Jenna Allison, 

who's been in the music industry 

for over 10 years, and Mary McPage, 

lead singer of the Mary McPage band 

were also among the many judges. 

Other judges included Dennis 

and Pam Cole of The Band Together 

Band. These two are also music 

teachers, instructors and have been 

performing locally for years. Dana 

Fox, lead singer and songwriter for 

the band Dacota, and last but not 

least, Lonnie and Helen Meadows, 

who've been in the industry for eons 

and have opened for mega-groups like 

The Commodores, were all in charge 

of choosing the Evergeen Idol karaoke 

contest winner for 2011. 

Karen Wessel was the organizer, 

score keeper and the secret, behindthe-scenes 

brains that kept things 

moving along smoothly, along with 

Larry LeBlanc owner/operator of the 

Lighting and Karaoke Store who ran 

the karaoke system with the backing

Letter To Editor 

(In Response to Super Steve’s Letter, 

Published Vol. 9, Issue 9, 2011 issue) 

There's much more to what Super 

Steve said in his Letter To The Editor 

last month. From a singer's perspective, 

the "legit" shows are a much 

better experience. 

I've seen more than 100 karaoke 

shows in the Northwest over the past 

three years since my retirement, plus 

many more over the past 18 years. 

What I see happening is that 

those who rip music onto hard drives, 

whether external or direct, generally 

have poor outward sound quality, 

chop their music intros, and also end 

up with very noticeable built-in key 

distortions. On top of that, most of 

the rip-off karaoke artists don't know 

how to mix for their singers and all 

you end up with is "noise." Nor do they 

sing well or interact in a professional 

manner with their singers. Why do 

you think concert sound engineers get 

the big bucks? Performers too? Same 

should hold true for the karaoke hosts 

that do their jobs well and play by the 

rules of business. 

Today, most of the major disk 

manufacturers have MP3 legit downloads 

made for commercial use (besides 

home use) of a high-grade quality, 

even better than disk-play, and 

better price per song than years ago. 

What I find offensive are the 

cheap disk mfg’s playing make-believe 

music. I’ve watched decent singers using 

these tracks tend to go overly flat 

or sharp because the electronic sound 

is not ‘true’, and hard for the ears 

to pick up on the key that’s playing. 

Many times after hearing songs that 

sounded ‘off’, I would go on YouTube 

to hear how the original song really 

sounds. The next time I see that awful 

disk brand on the screen and a singer 

trying to do a halfway decent job and 

can't, I'll be prepared to pull out my 

fancy ear plugs and smile. 

Some karaoke hosts have been 

bragging to their audiences that do 

not play Sound Choice or Chartbusters 

(and Stellar), the ‘real music’, anymore 

and try to run their shows with the

big events at the Arena. 

You’ll never guess who was leading 

the charge at the Judge’s table. 

Just this tiny, little lady with more 

spunk than oughta be allowed. It 

was our dear friend Aunty Pumpkin, 

and Steve was glad to have karaoke’s 

original, and most-accomplished diva 

in charge of the judging. She is the 

sweetest lil’ thing, she is. We could 

do a whole piece on Aunty Pumpkin 

herself, and just might! Stop by her 

Facebook page at Auntypumpkin Karaokenetwok 

and say hi. 

Of course, she was surrounded by 

Paulina L., KJ Tom, and Samantha 

S., each highly qualified to judge the 

seven contestants left in the competition. 

Some had squeaked through the 

Semi-Finals event just a week earlier, 

while others sailed through. They 

were all here tonight, and each would 

perform two songs. The best singer of 

the night would be handed a trip for 

two to Las Vegas as donated by Sandy 

Roberts at Sroberts@Passport2Travel. 

net! It’s rumored they get a bit more 

sunshine than we do up here. Could 

be nice!

All in all, the event was extremely 

well organized, and as always, very 

professional. Bravo! 

Fifteen hopefuls took the stage, 

first singing a country song of their 

choice and then bringing their best 

secondary song during the second 

round of finals. All of the competitors 

supported one another, cheering for 

everyone, representing the karaoke 

family proudly. A special cheering section 

from Stanwood, stood out above 

all others. 

What a great show to watch. We 

couldn't tear ourselves away during 

the breaks for fear of missing a single 

moment. 

Although there were three ladies 

who chose the same song to sing in 

the final round, the rules stated that 

once someone chose their song, they 

couldn't turn back, so each one in turn 

tried to make the song their own. Good 

sportsmanship was the name of the 

game. As you might expect, Adele’s 

Rolling in the Deep was the popular 

song of choice.

and chosen as the ultimate winners. 

Third place winner, Jon Hidey, took 

home a $100 gift certificate for the 

Sound Light & Karaoke Store. Second 

place, Kate Wirth, received a home 

karaoke system with music anyone 

would be proud to own, also provided 

by the Karaoke Store and the grand 

prize winner, Sabrina Keys, snagged 

the $1,000 cash and proudly opened 

for The Band Perry at the Evergreen 

State Fair on August 30 in front of 

thousands of screaming fans! 

Each year, the Evergreen Idol competition 

continues to grow. It's worth the 

fair admission just to come and watch 

the competition, but if you arrive early, 

you can enjoy all the fair has to offer too.

over. The rides, 

the concerts, the exhibits, and the 

Evergreen Idol Karaoke Contest complete. 

What a great year 2011 was for 

the Fair! 

I recently sat down with the 

Grand Prize Winner of the Evergreen 

Idol competition, Sabrina Keys, and 

asked her a few pressing questions. 

Take a seat and hear what a rising 

star has to say about the experience. 

Sabrina, how did you hear about the 

contest originally? I heard about the 

Congratulations Sabrina Keys, 2011 Evergreen Idol 

contest through my best friend Kelli 

Malloy. She said "Let's do it!", and I 

said "Heck yeah!" 

Where did you qualify to begin with? 

I qualified at O'Finnigan's Pub in 

Everett. There is some serious singers 

there! Had to give it a shot. 

Did you get to hang out with the Band 

Perry, and what did you think of them? I got 

to meet The Band Perry for about five 

minutes. Very sweet, shook my hand 

and took a picture with me. I said, 

"I'm opening for you guys, I'm really 

nervous". They all said in the sweetest 

country voice, "Aw girl you're gonna be 

just fine, you won for a reason!" It was 

awesome. True country folk. 

What do you think will come of all of 

this, any leads or offers yet? This was 

such an amazing experience! Never 

thought I would be taking pictures 

and signing autographs! As of now 

I've got more Facebook friends and 

memories that will last me a lifetime. 

Hopefully I'll run into right person 

one day. 

What are your future plans now that 

your divorce is finalized? God has some 

wonderful plans for me, and being 

married at this time in my life wasn't 

one of them. I will and always will be 

Sabrina Keys. 

I'm sure you're thrilled about taking 

1st Place, what's next for you as far as 

competitions go? After this whole experience, 

the sky is the limit for me! I 

love to sing more than anything, and 

if there is a contest, I'll find it and 

give it my heart 

and soul. My future 

looks bright! 

I just can't give 

up. Music lives 

and breathes in 

my family and as 

long my future 

has singing in it, 

sign me up!

fans... I love it. I 

hope if you do get

people don't realize 

how serious 

karaoke is. It's an 

artform getting up in front of all those 

people. You have to grasp everything in 

that song. No matter the song, pretend 

that artist is sitting in the front row and 

your workin' your booty off to get him/ 

her to give you a standing ovation. 

When can we expect to see an album/ 

recording from you? No plans of a CD or 

album. Wouldn't know where to start!

As reported, Ozzies downtown 

Seattle, hosted another fabulous karaoke 

contest where they gave away a top 

prize of $500 cash to one lucky karaoke 

singer on September 24, 2011. 

Excited hopefuls 

showed up early in anticipation 

of what was to 

come. They brought lots 

of friends and supporters 

along, but seemed just a 

little bit nervous, yet 

confident. We arrived 

earlier than expected, 

which was a good thing, 

because within the first 

hour of karaoke, the 

room filled to capacity. 

Ozzie’s gorgeous 

host, Deanna, opened 

the show with Dirty 

Deeds by AC/DC. She 

promptly got the show 

going by bringing up a 

regular singer, and then 

announced that the next 

singer would be the first contestant in 

the competition. She worked in every 

contestant, and those who weren't even 

aware there was a contest that night, 

weren‘t put off in the slightest. 

Each contestant ended up singing 

around three songs each, give or take, 

depending on whether or not they were 

in the room at the time their names 

were called. Deanna wasn't strict or 

even regimented, just very relaxed 

and emphasized the fun. The party 

lights were flashing, the music pumping, 

and the patrons were all having 

a great night out. 

A group of firefighters came in 

and asked to sit at our table since we 

pretty much had the only seating left 

in the room at that point. Of course 

Kelli is awarded $500 cash after taking 1st Place at Ozzies 

scores, and announced the winner. 

Congratulations to… Kelly! The crowd 

cheered, her friends gave her a standing 

ovation, all the other contestants 

congratulated her, and she sang an 

encore song to celebrate winning the 

$500 cash. 

Congratulations to all of the contestants 

who made it into the top group 

of singers who competed. They were all 

very, very good. I'm glad I wasn't judging 

this one. Misha, Kelly, Rebecca, 

Johnathan, Johnny, and Seven really 

gave everyone a great show. 

Ozzies serves food late, has great 

bartenders and staff, and of course an 

awesome karaoke host! What more 

could you ask for in a karaoke location? 

And actually, they even have a 

LOT more to offer than that, honestly. 

Ozzies boasts two levels of fun, and 

karaoke seven nights a week! Live 

music, DJ Dance, and breakfast, lunch 

and dinner served every day of the 

week. Sports on all the big screens, 

and happy hour every day! If you 

can't find what you're looking for here, 

you're not looking hard enough. 

Becca’s fanbase came prepared to cheer her on to greatness 

we welcomed them. They joined in, 

singing, laughing, and enjoying their 

beverages. 

Ozzies has pool and a DJ in the 

back of the room during Thursday night 

karaoke too, so if you want a break from 

singing, you can always head on back 

and get your dance on, request a song, 

or just have a change of scenery. 

We had a delicious, reasonably 

priced dinner, and the service was 

good too - a big plus in my book!

The Parlor is well-staffed, friendly, and 

warmly inviting. Show your I.D. at the 

door, then proceed to your destination. 

On Thursday nights at 7:30pm, 

come out to the Parlor Live, a high-falutin’ 

comedy club located inside the Parlor. 

Take in a professional, live comedy 

show that will have you rolling in the 

aisles with laughter. After the comedy 

show, the party continues in the Ultralounge, 

where you can sing your heart 

out with Positive Promotions Karaoke, 

featuring Sandra Dee as your hostess. 

We gathered a group of friends, made a 

reservation, and piled in for the comedy 

show. Three full tables of us ordered 

up a slew of delicious appetizers and 

entrees, not to mention a bunch of 

cocktails! I had the chicken enchiladas, 

my friend Taz ordered a huge appetizer 

feast that feeds eight people! And, yes, 

she shared. It included beef satays, 

shrimp satays, 

buffalo wings, 

crispy fried artichoke 

hearts, 

crab stuffed 

mushrooms and 

pan seared pork 

ribs, all served 

o v e r a hu g e 

mound of parmesan 

waffle fries. 

Absolutely decadent! 

Others ordered 

meals from 

lobster ravioli, 

salads and burgers, 

to grilled 

prime rib. 

They had Asian-inspired appetizers, 

American favorites, and elaborate 

offerings as well. Try the shrimp, crab 

and fresh chile quesadilla! I was so 

full I didn't get to indulge in the baby 

elephant ears, or the cheesecake bru-

The gang had a blast at Sandra Dee’s show at the Parlor 

lee! Guess I’ll just have to go back for 

the experience of dessert alone! 

If you end up staying late, you 

can order breakfast (served after 

11pm), and they have a full menu 

available all night long - a real bonus 

for all you party hearty types. 

Thank goodness they had Monster 

energy drinks, Rockstars and the like. 

We partied like rockstars and ended up 

hanging out all night long singing karaoke 

after an excellent comedy show. 

The comedy shows feature wellknown 

comedians. In October, Kevin 

Nealon from the hit Showtime series 

"Weeds" will be performing live. Could 

be a good time to delve into that dessert 

menu. Check out the Parlor Live’s

and get your tickets in advance to see 

your favorite comedians. 

As for the karaoke, Sandra Dee 

runs a top notch, first class show. I 

must say, there was some serious talent 

at the Ultralounge on the night 

we visited. With no cover charge, the 

karaoke show fills up quickly, and 

the rotations are lengthy, but well 

worth the wait. I even felt comfortable 

enough to get up there and sing, and 

for those of you who know me, I will 

NOT sing, unless I feel completely 

confident in the host, the sound system 

and of course in myself! 

Sandra Dee throws in some 

dance songs throughout the night to 

get everybody out on the dance floor 

and loosen up a bit. A bunch of us did 

the Electric Slide, and later we danced 

along to some of the singers. 

Karaoke starts at 9:30pm, directly 

after the comedy show. We were lucky 

enough to have gotten the V.I.P. treatment, 

sitting close to the stage at a 

booth large enough to accommodate our

and lots of billiards! With $5 million 

invested, Parlor Billiards accommodates 

up to 800 guests, features 17 pool

Chuck and Loni, a father/daughter 

team, recently took ownership of 

the bar. They’ve done a stellar job of 

promoting all they have to offer the 

community. The dark woods from top 

to bottom keeps the customers feeling 

warm and comfortable whether 

they’re singing karaoke, playing 

darts, pulltabs, or just hangin’ out 

with friends around the bar watching 

the football game. Chuck and 

Loni have put an emphasis on hiring 

quality staff members at every level.

Barbara and Brian, Hugh, Phil, and 

Ian can hardly resist the colorful stage 

lights, and exuberant accolades from 

like-minded friends at the MVPub. 

A humongous screen with lyrics 

is projected all across the front of the 

performer and onto the wall behind 

the singer. A great effect for the audience, 

and sets the mood for a good 

show. It’s certainly not hard to follow 

along with the lyrics, no matter how 

obscure the song might be. 

And the food is awesome. Six gourmet 

burgers to choose from for around $8, 

soups and salads, sandwiches, plus 

brisket, alfredos, and pulled pork 

entrees, all for just $6 to $14 each. If 

you come in later, and still want to 

get something to eat, they serve a late 

night menu from 10pm-close. 

Wednesday night karaoke is a 

great experience at the MVPub. $3 

well drinks, and $2.50 pounders will 

always treat your wallet with care. 

Sometimes it’s something as simple 

as saving money that will have perfect 

strangers singing out loud in front of 

each other. This is frowned upon when 

riding the commuter train heading to 

work. Here they praise you. It happens 

every time. 

Greg danced around, engaged the 

crowd, and thoroughly entertained. He 

and Barbara later joined for a sweet 

duet. Nancy warned that Jim’s version 

of Crazy was amazing. She was right.

across the country. Everything that 

you saw on ABC TV was pre-taped. 

None of it was aired live. 

Did they cover all expenses during this 

crazy adventure? 

Yes, but I don’t think all the tabs 

were picked up by the same company 

or entity. I believe that the different 

branches of the show (Las Vegas as 

opposed to LA) were paid for by different 

entities. 

What is Host Joey Fatone like? 

Joey is a very likable fella. That’s 

why we’ve seen him hosting various 

shows. And he didn’t disappoint here 

either. He made it fun for all of us. 

He’s playful and raw at times but 

he’s a grown-up dad too, no longer, a 

young teen heartthrob. So I think that 

makes him a good balance as a show 

host. I liked him. 

Incidentally, I told Joey about the 

prior connection I have with him: 

When I competed, several years ago in 

Nashville at the Dick Clark National 

Singing Championship, I competed 

with his older sister, Janine Fatone. 

That was back when NSync were just 

becoming well known. 

What do you think will come out of all of 

this, any leads or offers yet? 

Nothing of significance yet. But they 

did just finish airing the show this 

past weekend. So we’ll see what the 

coming weeks and months bring. I 

am very hopeful and optimistic about 

the future. 

We saw your wife Bonnie at the finale show, 

was she able to accompany you through the 

whole thing? 

She was not able to be with me in Las 

Vegas. But as you saw, she was able to 

be with me in Hollywood.

Any bloopers we didn't get to see that 

were memorable or anything funny you 

can share? 

There are some on the Web site at 

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/Karaoke_USA, 

but one in particular 

comes to mind. All throughout 

the tapings, in all four regions of competition, 

I guess people were trying to 

get Joey to do some NSync moves on 

stage. I personally heard it a couple of 

times in Vegas and in L.A. He always 

just shook his head “No!” On the final 

day of taping, some audience members 

got a wild hair, probably bribed the 

soundman and, on a taping break, 

they rushed the stage and began to 

lip-sync to NSync’s “Bye bye bye”. 

The way they danced and knowing 

the moves perfectly, it was so funny! 

We were all laughing ourselves silly, 

including Joey. Suddenly, he couldn’t 

contain himself any longer and rushed 

up to the stage and promptly joined the 

group, dancing “NSync” with them. 

Of course the crowd went berserk at 

that point. I so wish I had that on 

video. It was a highlight of the week 

in Hollywood. 

Will you be going to see Wilson Philips when 

they come to town in December? 

That is my plan. I asked Carnie Wilson 

to get me backstage. She said, 

“Yes”, so I hope it will happen. She 

was so sweet to me, and my family. I 

really want to see her in action. 

I'm sure you're not thrilled about finishing in 

2nd place, but you have an amazing grace 

about you and take things in stride. What's 

next for you as far as competitions go? Anything 

planned for the near future? 

Well, there is a certain amount of 

disappointment when one loses, no 

matter how far he/she has come. But 

you are absolutely right, I love God 

and simply wait to see His purposes in 

outcomes like this. Many times, a loss 

in the immediate can be a blessing in 

the long run, on many levels. I believe 

God has a plan for the gifts He’s given 

to me. I hope to achieve that plan. 

In the immediate, I will pursue a deal 

with either a major talent agency and/ 

or record company. I believe I have 

music, voiceover work and possibly 

even acting, in my future. As for competing, 

I am always appreciative of 

how competition polishes my chops, 

so I will likely continue to compete as 

time and circumstances permit. 

Anything in particular you’d like to tell 

your fans? 

Yes, I want to send them all my most 

heartfelt thanks and appreciation for 

the many, many words of encouragement 

and prayers of support. It really 

does mean so much. I believe it all really 

truly does affect how everything 

turns out. And while I did not win 

the competition, I don’t believe it is all 

over. I believe God has so much yet to 

do with me and I pray that I will be 

able to go where He guides. 

Anything you'd like to convey to other masters 

of karaoke? 

Keep on singing. We all love to hear 

people sing because we all have some 

appreciation for singing. We carry this 

instrument around with us, albeit at 

varying levels of proficiency, and those 

who have the privilege of performing 

possess a gift from God to ‘speak’ to 

others. Regard that gift to the utmost 

and you won’t be so disappointed if you 

sometimes lose the race. 

When can we expect to see a new album/ 

recording from you? 

As soon as possible. But I don’t know 

for sure, exactly when that will be. I 

have so much to do regarding that. 

But I have already posted, and will 

continue to post some of my music on 

my new Web site to get a little taste

2nd Annual Tony Bridges Band Family Night Out! 


For the second year in a row, 

The Tony Bridges Band held it's now 

annual "Family Night Out!" at the 

Pizza Palace in downtown Snohomish 

last month. 

The band recently returned 

from Nashville where they opened 

for Darryl Worley, and hung out with 

Montgomery Gentry at the Tennessee 

River Run. The 5K run, benefits the 

Darryl Worley 

Foundation, which has existed 

since 2001 and serves special needs 

for people in West Tennessee, Northwestern 

Alabama and Northeastern 

Mississippi. Additionally, it supports 

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 

Le Bonheur Children's Medical 

Center, the Cystic Fibrosis 

Foundation, and the Darryl Worley 

Cancer Treatment Center. Their 

being there was not only a lot of fun 

and a great life experience, but it was 

for a great cause too! 

The family night out begins 

with pizza! Served buffet style, pizza 

is brought out four at a time, along 

with salads, pop, ice cold water, and of 

course dessert too. The Pizza Palace 

holds lots of people, it's three levels 

deep, and a whole lot of fun. The downstairs 

is set up kind of like a kids basement 

gameroom, with hoops, games, a 

Disney movie playing, and lots of room 

to run around. The upstairs features 

a large open area where tables are set

up and you can look out over the crowd 

on the main level without being in the 

middle of it. The main level, where all 

the action is, features a bar, several 

old-school video games to play (free!) 

for everyone to enjoy, seating, a dance 

floor, a stage, and of course the Tony 

Bridges Band for Family Night Out. 

The event began at 6pm, and went until 

just after 10pm, which was nice as it 

wasn't too terribly late for the kids, and 

we adults got home with enough time 

to unwind as well. Saturday nights are 

great for a family night. We were happy 

to have been able to make this event for 

the second year in a row. The band has 

added several new songs to their playlist, 

and some more original tunes, plus 

they’ve got some great harmonies going 

on. The band typically plays country 

music, but we also heard a little Sweet 

Home Alabama, La Bamba, Come Together 

by the Beatles, and a couple other 

covers that everyone really enjoyed. 

People were dancing on the dance floor 

the whole night long and the band kept 

crankin’ out the tunes. Even Tony's 

smallest family member, Maxwell, 

played along with a tambourine and 

singing some of the tunes to everyone's 

amusement! He's just a little guy, but he 

had it all goin’ on. He even made a little 

tip money for himself. 

Partway through the evening, 

the band took a break and they pulled 

raffle tickets, that were for sale all 

night until the drawing for only $1 

each! This year they had quite a few 

sponsors and gave away lots of great 

prizes. We won the first prize of the 

night, a $20 gift certificate for Ezell's 

Famous Chicken. Other prizes included 

gift certificates for the Olive Garden, 

Gotta Go Espresso, Twisted Cafe' 

in Woodinville, Round Table Pizza, 

Dalton Midway (lube, oil and filter) in 

Clearview, signed Tony Bridges merchandise, 

Glow Bowling for six at Evergreen 

Lanes, a $50 gift certificate to 

Grocery Outlet in Monroe, a one-night 

stay at GuestHouse Inn & Suites, and 

a 3-month membership to Snohomish 

Fitness Center for a couple! Again, all 

the raffle prize money was donated to 

the Darryl Worley Foundation, as was 

the $60 dollars raised (by yours truly) 

during a silent auction for an autographed 

football jersey, a t-shirt from 

the Tennessee River Run, also signed 

by Darryl Worley, Montgomery Gentry 

and the Tony Bridges Band members, 

a magazine featuring the bands and 

other assorted memorabilia from the 

River Run. We are happy to report that 

we won the silent auction and glad to 

donate to this very worthy cause! 

There were a couple hundred kids 

and adults present when we arrived 

at the event, 

plenty of food 

and drinks to 

go around and 

lots of hugs and 

smiles.

comedy, “Blithe Spirit,” running 

Sept. 23 through Oct. 9 at the Historic 

Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby 

Avenue in downtown Everett. 

Socialite and novelist Charles 

Condomine, played by local stage 

favorite Asa Sholdez, invites the 

eccentric medium and clairvoyant, 

Madame Arcati (Heidi Heimarck), to 

his house to conduct a séance, hoping 

to gather material for his next book. 

The scheme backfires when he is 

haunted by the ghost of his annoying 

and temperamental first wife, 

Elvira (Jennifer Ropella), following 

the séance. 

The mischievous Elvira makes 

continual attempts to disrupt 

Charles' marriage to his second wife, 

Ruth (Suzanne Soule), who cannot 

see or hear the ghost. 

It’s ironic that the ghostly story 

will be presented at the Historic 

Everett Theatre, which has its own 

reputation as a haunted venue. 

The resident ghost, who has been 

given the moniker of Smilin’ Al, has 

been perceived as a friendly entity, 

although he is known to be mischievous 

at times too. 

“Blithe Spirit” is a lighthearted, 

yet well-written supernatural comedy 

by one of the great writers of our 

time. The cast features local community 

theatre favorites, and the show 

is directed by Daniel Guttenberg.

gone out of business. What are they 

going to do, pull Sunfly next? Rumors 

are flying across-the-pond for them to 

get their pirate share too. 

CAVs systems loaded with oddball 

brands makes for a very boring 

evening with bad sound. And those 

older CAVs are so slow! 

Those hosts and venues that have 

removed their Sound Choice, etc. from 

their collections are, in essence, telling 

their audience that the rest of their 

collection may have been acquired in 

a non-commercial, roundabout way, 

avoiding all licensing. In the long run, 

they will lose their faithful Sound 

Choice singers. Even though they 

haven’t put out anything new, Sound 

Choice is the most requested karaoke 

brand of music of the 21st century. 

Legitimate hosts have told me they 

are seeing folks for the first time that 

were traveling by word-of-mouth, look- 

ing for places that played their favorite 

Sound Choice disks. 

Super Steve is one of those rare 

people that grew up singing karaoke 

and honing his craft. He recognizes 

quality, exudes quality, and should be 

listened to. Steve’s influence is unavoidable 

at Charley's in Fircrest, where the 

DJ booth and stage area is designed 

well. Charley’s music collection is 

vast. Pride of management, along with 

Steve's music/singing ability makes 

Charley’s an excellent karaoke venue 

for the ‘younger’ audience. DJ Tom is 

also a quality karaoke host here, giving 

Super Steve the night off at times.

OFF this month! 

Just as a quick note; because this 

karaoke rag has paid advertisers, I 

cannot mention bars, or hosts, but I 

can mention general areas. You might 

be able to figure out the place, if you 

pay attention to what was going on 

around you. 

So there we were, out for a night 

of karaoke, me and my large-breasted 

friend. If you were there, you’ll remember 

her, she was the dark-haired MILF 

who stood up, turned, and her left boob 

knocked over some guys beer! 

We each sang a couple of times 

and I was like, “I'm done”, but Big 

Boobs still wanted to sing. The guys 

always come over and tell her what 

a great job she did, bulging in their 

jeans. She knows you guys just want 

a closer look at those big sexy twin 

sisters! Oh, and just a note guys, when 

Big Boobs was talking to you and the 

guy with the Affliction shirt, the other 

guy bought her a drink! 

You guys thought you were covertly 

brushing against her boobs 

and getting away with a cheap thrill 

without her knowing, the fact is, she 

rubbed her boobs on you purposefully, 

just to see how many times you would 

come back using some excuse like, 

“Um hey, do you sing?” 

Oh and one more thing, when 

you were all over there staring at 

her hard nipples visible through that 

tight tee she wore, she knew you told 

your buddies it was you’re “accidental 

brush” that must have turned her on. 

Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but 

she tweaked them herself! It was so 

funny watching you dorks fall all over 

yourselves! “Stupid men anyways!” 

she said when we were driving home. 

Just wanted to let you cheap thrill losers 

know that she totally played you! 

Now back to the point of the “Payoff 

Stayers". Big Boobs and I are sitting 

there watching when this guy walks 

up to the host and hands him a wad 

of greenbacks. Next thing we know, 

the host comes over to our table and 

asks her if this guy can sing in front 

of her because his friends are leaving 

and he wants to get in one more song 

before they go. She said, “Sure, that's 

fine”. Then he asked a couple of other 

people in the rotation, and they said 

okay too. So, this guy sings before us, 

which is fine, but then the asshole 

doesn't leave! He’s still there during 

the next rotation and sings before Big 

Boobs again! Now, I’m telling you, Big 

Boobs doesn't get mad very often, but 

this pissed her off so bad her nipples 

got all hard again! 

She sang her next song, and some 

guy comes over, sets his beer down 

and says, “That was awesome, are you 

gonna sing another one?” Suddenly 

Big Boobs gets up, absolutely furious, 

turned around and knocks over this 

guys beer with her left tit and said, 

“Not in this effed-up rotation!” She 

turns to me and says, “Come on Dee 

Effin, lets go! So we left. 

So, all the way home, she ranted 

about that damn "Payoff Stayer”. I 

finally convinced her that the host 

probably really believed the guy was 

planning to leave with his friends 

after his song, so it wasn't really his 

fault. But he shouldn't have taken the 

guy’s money! And even if the guy did 

stick around, the host shouldn't have 

let him sing in front of everybody else 

like he did. 

She finally calmed down and we 

talked and laughed about the tittie 

pervs and how Big Boobs plays games 

with these guys. Hell, she even told 

me some games she plays with girls 

interested in her tits! 

Well, that's it boys and girls. If

north to Village 

Inn Pub & Eatery in 

Bellingham, WA. A 

good friend of ours was 

celebrating a birthday party, and we 

heard there would be a "live karaoke 

band". What better excuse is there? 

The Village Inn Pub is located at 

3020 Northwest Ave in Bellingham.

night of the week. I called, and got 

Gavin on the phone. He was actually 

our bartender for the evening as well. 

He was helpful, and made us feel very 

welcome - always a plus when visiting 

somewhere new. 

We arrived safely, with the help 

of our navigational system and Yahoo 

maps (thank god for Yahoo!). We were 

hoping to grab a bite to eat, but we 

just missed their cut-off time, so we 

would only be able to stay as long as 

our tummies would allow.

The party spilled over from table 

to table, and included the entire room. 

Win or lose, everybody was gracious 

and fun.

go above and beyond.

Our new Scottish friend, Allistair 

opened up with a smooth Mack The 

Knife, Bobby Darin style. Johnny C. 

came running through the crowd from 

the back of the room and sang In My 

Hands Again. The audience was on 

their feet. 

Laura piped in with It’s A New 

Day by Buble, followed by Janie, a big 

crowd favorite, who performed Cowboy 

Cassenova. Shelly took up the rear 

to remain most fresh in the minds of 

the judges as they convened, singing 

Journey’s Faithfully. The amazing 

level of talent at Turner’s that night 

escaped no one. 

Even the resident street bum 

was groovin’ on the sidewalk in his 

wheelchair. These judges are surely 

faced with soul-searching decisions 

to be made. 

Christie voted into ultimate sing-off 

in front of the stage where a greatsounding 

band called "The Uncanny 

Valley” were in full swing. As we greeted 

our friends, we recognized a bunch 

of other people too, so it was kind of cool 

to hang out with everyone for a while 

outside of our own karaoke show. 

The band itself consisted of four 

members; Jonathan on keyboards, 

Dave on bass, David on drums, and 

Jesse playing guitar. The keyboard 

player, Jonathan, even whipped out a 

trumpet when certain songs called for 

it. We were really impressed!

in That’s Why They Call It The Blues. 

Christie did Bruno Mars’ Grenade, one 

of my absolute favorites. Allistair, just 

two years into his karaoke life, got the 

crowd going with Sweet Caroline. 

In his best hippie getup, Johnny C. 

thrilled the room when he started in on 

Sister Christian. Laura cracked under 

the pressure and left the competition. 

The entire bar surrounded Janie 

when she sang I Will Always Love You. 

That girl is seriously gifted. After wiping 

a tear from our eyes, Shelly, a new 

grandmother, presented the judges 

with Bonnie Tyler’s 

Total Eclipse 

Of The Heart.

that Monday nights at Turner’s 

was Industry Night, plus karaoke 

good times every Wednesday, and Ladies 

Night was Thursdays, the judges 

presented him with the results. 

As if to build even more suspense, 

Steve announced that Turner’s would 

be starting another contest in October!

Okay! After months of qualifying 

and semi-finals, singing their way into 

3rd Place… Johnny C.! Yeah! Johnny 

wins a $50 GC and his very own private 

karaoke party at Turner’s! Way

And in 1st Place it was a tie! Janie 

and Christie had managed to tie for 

1st Place. They are both such incredible 

singers. The judges asked them to have 

a sing-off to determine the winner. 

They were happy to oblige. 

Christie gave us everything 

she had singing At Last, and Janie 

stunned the audience with It’s All 

Coming Back To Me Now. Janie wins 

the sing-off and takes 1st Place and 

the trip to Las Vegas! 

Congratulations Janie! What a 

fantastic finish! 

Both Janie and Christie could record 

an album right now! Christie was 

handed a $100 GC and her own private 

karaoke party compliments of Sing- 

Along Northwest for landing 2nd Place 

in Turner‘s first karaoke contest.

Nicole gave us Space Oddity, and Willard 

followed with Mother by Danzig. 

Angelique and her buddy Marcia sang 

F*ck You by CeeLo, and the birthday 

boy, Stephen, sang Just What I Needed. 

The music was lively, and most of 

the lyrics were available on printed 

sheets. I wasn't brave enough to give 

it a try this time around, but might 

consider it sometime in the future 

when I had more time. 

The Uncanny Valley features the 

music of Abba to Jason Mraz, Michael 

Jackson, Beatles, Jimmy Buffet, CCR, 

Bob Dylan, Rolling Stones, as well as 

Lady Antebellum. Even Adele was on 

the list! 

Huge props to these guys, we've 

seen a lot of karaoke-type bands in 

the area, but these guys are the most 

well-rounded and versatile yet. It's not 

about playing loud, for these guys it's 

about loving the music.

Bellingham’s Village Inn Pub 

also provides regular karaoke on 

Friday nights, as well as other events 

from time to time. They have four 

pool tables, pulltab bowls, and the 

bar is huge! 

We had a great time. I completely 

forgot how hungry I was until the band 

took a short break, and we headed out. 

But, man, will we be back!
