Celebrating Black History this year, WGBH celebrates Black History month with a slate of programs profiling the rich history, culture and contributions of African Americans. explore! Underground Railroad: The William Still Story extraordinary people risked their lives to help fugitive slaves escape via the clandestine Underground railroad. One of them was William Still of Philadelphia, a free black man who accepted delivery of transported crates containing “human cargo.” this documentary reveals some of the dramatic, lesser-known stories behind this humanitarian enterprise, and explores key Canadian connections, including the surprising fate of former slaves who crossed the border to “Freedom’s Land.” Mon, 2/6 at 10pm on WGBH 2 American Experience/Freedom Riders From may until november 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans joined together in courageous acts of civil disobedience, riding buses into the deep south in dangerous defiance of Jim Crow laws. Freedom Riders, an emmy- Award-winning film produced by WGBH’s American Experience, revisits this pivotal moment in our civil rights history. Tue, 2/7 at 8pm on WGBH 2 Slavery by Another Name explore the little-known story of the post-emancipation era and the labor practices and laws that effectively created a new form of slavery in the south that persisted well into the 20th century. Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by The Wall Street Journal’s douglas A. Blackmon, the film also examines the concept of “neoslavery,” which sentenced African Americans to forced labor for violating an array of laws that criminalized their everyday behavior. Attempting to do something that has never been done before, they closely follow a family of urban raccoons as the animals navigate the complex landscape of a big city.
