von Dr. Franz Schausberger
und des Salzburger Landtagsabgeordneten
Dr. Bernd Petrisch im Sitzungszimmer
der Zupanija von Karlovac die
Unterzeichnung der Mitgliedschaft zum
Institut der Regionen Europas (IRE) statt.
In Vertretung von Präsident Horvat, der
überraschend nach Zagreb fahren musste,
nahm die Unterzeichnung die Vizepräsidentin
Prof. Marija Ficurin vor. Anschließend
hielten Prof. Ficurin und Dr.
Schausberger eine Pressekonferenz ab,
in der auf die Bedeutung von grenzüberschreitenden
Kooperationen, vom Aufbau
von Netzwerken und von der Einbindung
in die Informationskanäle der EU für die
Regionen hingewiesen wurde. Dies sei
auch der Grund, warum die Region Karlovac
entschieden habe, Mitglied des IRE
zu werden, von dem man sich genau in
diesen Bereichen Unterstützung erwarte.
Der Beitritt und die Unterzeichnung war
von Frau Eva Maria Sobotik-Pavan vorbereitet
worden.
Die Gespanschaft Karlovac (kroat.
Karlovačka županija) ist eine Gespanschaft
in Zentralkroatien und grenzt im Norden
an Slowenien, im Süden an Bosnien-Herzegowina.
Sie hat eine Fläche von 3.622
km 2 und 141.787 Einwohner (Volkszählung
von 2001).
Verwaltungssitz der Gespanschaft Karlovac
ist die gleichnamige Stadt Karlovac. Die
Festungs- und Vier-Flüsse-Stadt liegt an
der Korana, der Kupa, der Mrežnica und
der Dobra. Karlovac (deutsch Karlstadt,
ungarisch Károlyváros) ist eine Stadt in
Zentral-Kroatien mit 59.395 Einwohnern

Karl II). Die Stadt
mit vielen schönen
Barockbauten
entwickelte sich aus der ehemaligen
mittelalterlichen Verteidigungsfestung, die
dem osmanischen Vordringen nach Mitteleuropa
Einhalt bieten sollte. Der Bau der
Festung begann am 13. Juli 1579. In dem
historischen Altstadtkern sind auch heute
die Überreste dieses einst von starken
Mauern und Schanzen umgebenen Festungsbaus
zu sehen, der die Form eines
regelmäßigen sechszackigen Sternes
hatte. Karlovac ist seit seinem Anbeginn
einer der größten Verkehrsknoten Kroatiens
gewesen, was vor allem auf seine außerordentlich
günstige geografische Lage
zurückzuführen ist.

for the membership to the
IRE took place in the conference
room of the Zupanija (administration) of
Karlovac in the presence of Franz Schausberger
and the Member of the Regional
Parliament of the State of Salzburg, Mr.
Bernd Petrisch. Vice president Marija Ficurin
signed the document substituting President
Horvath who had to go to Zagreb
at short notice. She then held a press
conference together with Mr. Schausberger,
in which they highlighted the importance
of trans-boundary cooperations,
the establishing of networks and the integration
of the regions into information
channels of the EU. They further pointed
out, that this was also the main reason
for which the region Karlovac had decided
to join the IRE. Joining und signing was
prepared by Ms. Eva Maria Sobotik-Pavan.
The Gespanschaft Karlovac (in Croatian
Karlovacka županija) is located in central
Croatia and boarders on Slovenia in the
North and on Bosnia-Herzegovina in the
South. It is about 3,622 square kilometres
in size and has about 141,787 inhabitants
according to the census of 2001.

Karlovac is the city of Karlovac. The city
with its fortress and four rivers is located
on the rivers Korana, Kupa, Mrežnica and
Dobra. Karlovac (in German Karlstadt, in
Hungarian Károlyváros) is a city in central

Croatians (85.86 %). Karlovac is one of
the youngest of Croatian cities (founded
in 1578 by archduke Karl II). The city with

ment. The construction of the fortress
started on 13th July 1579. In the historic
old town centre you can still see the remains
of this fortification building, which
was once surrounded by strong walls and
entrenchments and which once had the
shape of a measured six-pronged star.
From its very beginning Karlovac used to
be one of the most important traffic junctions
of Croatia, which is mainly due to
its very convenient geographic situation.
