BOARD MEETINGS
The HAC Board meets once a month at one of the board members' homes. Our meetings are informative and
fun. The board meetings are free and open to the membership. We cordially invite you to attend the
meetings. Just let the host(ess) know that you are coming, so more goodies will be prepared.
NOTE: There will be no more board meetings this club year, but we will let you know about the next one in
September. Thanks to the board for all the great hospitality this year.
Nominating Committee status report.
Here is a status of the efforts of the Nominating Committee 2007. The Board of the HACD has several open positions
starting in the new club year.
The openings are: Vice President, Secretary, Director of Reservations, Membership Chair, Treasurer and two Director
positions. Two members spontaneously offered their services: Mimi Dupont as Treasurer and Jack Wybenga as membership
chair. A Nominating Committee existing of Jan-Paul Kösters, Harry Peereboom, and member Vincent Basset
called around to see if there are members interested in a position. Calls are still being made at this time. Bettie Kilkelly
offered her services as Reservations Director. This means we have the positions of Vice President, Secretary and two
Directors still open. Grace Tamminga stepped up and will assume the Secretary position if no one else comes forward.
The current status of your new Board is as follows (subject to change):
President: Rudi Otto
Vice President: Vacant
Secretary: To be announced
Webmaster: Jan-Paul Kösters
Treasurer: Mimi Dupont
Membership Chair: Jack Wybenga
Reservations Director: Bettie Kilkelly
Program Chair: Nathalie Van Trier
Newsletter Editor: Jako Garos
May-Aug 2007
Dear Members:
Letter from the President
Letter from the President
Page 3
This will be my last letter as president of the board of the Holland-America Club. On August 1 st I will officially
turn the presidential duties over to Rudi Otto. I am confident that Rudi will guide the club through
another successful two-year term.
I have tremendously enjoyed being involved with the club management and have learned many facets that I
was not fully aware of before I became president. A club like we have requires members dedicated to make
the club a success. There are books to be kept, events to be organized (venue, meals, decorations, entertainment,
etc.), money to be collected, the budgeting of the available funds and financial reports, reservations
to be taken, Evites to be sent out, a website to be maintained and a membership database to be kept which
keeps track of members' emails, addresses, ages of their children (for Sinterklaas or Easter events), the
recording of the official minutes of the board meetings, and last but not least, this bi-monthly newsletter,
The Tulip Talk.
Personally I have never attended an event which I did not enjoy and which was not organized to the n th degree!
I hope you have the same experience; a lot of people are working hard to achieve that goal! I therefore
personally would like to thank all those who filled these positions while I was president of the board,
namely, in no particular order: Rudi Otto, Jan-Paul Kösters, Henny Houston, Nathalie van Trier, Jako Garos,
Agatha Mills, Harry Peereboom and Arnold Hijmering.
I also would like to extend my gratitude and thanks to the nominating committee: Jan-Paul Kösters, Harry
Peereboom and Vince Basset, for a job well done.
Since my last letter on March 1 st the club had two events, the Rijsttafel (see pictures on the web) and the
Nature walk. Both were unmitigated successes. The food at the rijsttafel was delicious with a delightful
atmosphere. Also the brunch served at the nature walk was tasty, varied and well prepared. The walk itself
was unforgettable; nature was at its best! The hills were covered in bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and
countless other wildflowers. We walked through forests, fields, crossed bridges, including a temporary one,
since the original bridge had just washed away (see picture number 27 of the slideshow on our website). We
saw beaver markings, you name it. Thank you, Lammert and Jetty for the generous sharing of your farm.
With this letter I wish all the members well and farewell as president.
Met vriendelijke groet
Do you know? From Wikipedia
The origin of golf is open to debate among Chinese, Dutch and Scottish. Golf was first mentioned in Dongxuan Records
(Chinese: 東 軒 錄 ), a Chinese book of the 11th Century. It was also mentioned in February 26 in the year 1297 in the
Netherlands in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht. Here the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball. Whoever
hit the ball in a target several hundreds of meters away the least number of times, won.
The Scots however regard golf to be a Scottish invention, as the game was supposedly mentioned in two 15th-century
laws prohibiting the playing of the game of "gowf". Scholars, however, suggest that this refers to another game which is
much akin to shinty or hurling, or to modern field hockey rather than golf. They point out that a game of putting a small
ball in a hole in the ground using golf clubs was played in 17th-century Netherlands rather than Scotland. This is backed
up by the fact that the term golf is an alteration of Dutch "kolf" meaning "stick, "club" and "bat". There are reports of
even earlier accounts of golf from continental Europe and an image in Gloucester cathedral showing golf dates from
1350.

hier toch in gaat zitten: Rudi, Jan-Paul, Hans, Hilde, Arnold, Henny, Harry, Agaath—hartelijk dank!
The Holiday Inn Select Richardson was again the venue for our outstanding rijsttafel event, and our great cooks (picture) did not
disappoint for another year! What a feast, and what a great organization again by Nathalie and Erwin van Trier. I have always made
this event a “must-attend” on my annual calendar, and I was so glad to be there again. I did not hear any complaints, except that
there was “too much food”. What a nice problem to have, and didn't we all indulge! There were a total of 74 people, of which 11
were guests.
Our president Frits Evenbly started the evening off with a “short but sweet” speech, and we were off to the races (the food, that is).
The variety was again tremendous this year!
It is great to see the “gezelligheid” that is part of this club, and I want to thank everyone that was there to help make this another
successful event. I have heard reports of people staying past the deadline and helping us out with cleaning up etc. Another great indication
of how we as members operate. The rijsttafel rocks!
Verslag NATURE WALK
volgen hier meteen rechtsonder!
Your outgoing president and his wife Meta will be married 50 years on May14th. They have known each other since
1951, and were engaged in 1953. They immigrated to Canada immediately after the wedding and lived there for 9 years
until 1966. Then they were transferred to the States where they lived until 1976. They then lived in the UK and returned
to the States for good until 1985. They have 5 children and 8 grandchildren. They will celebrate this great event in July
with a family reunion in the Smoky Mountains. We all wish the couple a wonderful anniversary!

MEMBERSHIP PICNIC—September 9th
Yes, yes, this is WAY too early, but please put this event in your calendar! We will have our annual
membership drife and picnic on our customary date. More details in evites and the first Tulip Talk
of the new club year!
On several occasions the club has incurred losses due to members who had made reservations without paying,
and then not showing up for the event.
When you are making a reservation for an event, we ask that you make a reservation with, and send a check
to, our director Agatha Mills. It has happened that some members made reservations, without sending a
check, and then don't show up.
Your Board would like to point out that as a result of reservations, commitments are being made by the Club.
In other words, if you make a reservation for a particular event (example: $30) for two people without sending
a check, and do not show up, the Club is still responsible for paying $40 for each member who did not
come ($30 paid by member, plus $10 additional which the Club paid for each member.) This is a loss of $80
for your Club.
It has been decided for future events, that unless your reservation is accompanied or immediately followed
by a check, no reservation will be made. In other words, if there is NO check, there is NO reservation.
Please ensure the timely receipt of the check; commitments will only be made based on the checks
received. If your check is received after the deadline, a $10 late fee will be assessed to your reservation..
In case you have made a paid reservation and are then prevented from coming, the club will refund your
money, provided the Reservations Chair receives the notification of cancellation before the commitment is
made.

SPECIALE REPORTAGE
May-Aug 2007
ADOPTEREN VANUIT KAZAKHSTAN
hele proces uitstekend begeleid.
is. Niemand anders spreekt daar Engels.
weer opnieuw doen: testen, notariseren, apostoliseren, vakantie aanvragen, etc. Ze moesten snel
zijn, want de baby kon weggeven worden. Op 3 februari gingen ze naar Kazakhstan (de stad Astana);

Haar naam is
Ainura.
Alles was in orde!
