INJURY RECOVERY PERIODS A total of 527 reports (74% of submissions) specified an estimated recovery time. INJURY EXAMPLES On October 12, 2006 a three-year-old 2 male dog named Kup’s Denali was euthanized at Hinsdale Greyhound Park after breaking his left hind leg in three places during a race. On October 11, 2006 a one-year-old male dog named UMR Abbott was euthanized at Hinsdale Greyhound Park after suffering a deep laceration from jumping into the racetrack rail during a race. On September 21, 2006 a three-year-old female dog named Kaycar Diane died unexpectedly half an hour after a race at Hinsdale Greyhound Park. On September 21, 2006 a three-year old female dog named Drivenbypeaches was euthanized after suffering a “fracture and severe injury” to her right hind leg during a race at Hinsdale Greyhound Park. On September 15, 2006 a two-year-old female dog named Corkys Messkan was euthanized after suffering multiple deep cuts over her entire body at the Lodge at Belmont. On August 25, 2006 a two-year-old male dog named AMF Ghost Rider was euthanized after colliding with another dog during a race at Seabrook Greyhound Park and shattering his elbow. On June 7, 2006 a four-year-old female dog named Femme Sirius died during a race at Hinsdale Greyhound Park when she collided with another dog entering the first turn and suffered a broken neck. On May 19, 2006 a three-year-old male dog named Strycova was euthanized after a bone in his left front leg was broken so severely it was “sheared in half” during a race at Seabrook Greyhound Park. On April 22, 2006 a one-year-old female dog named Amber died during a race at Seabrook Greyhound Park when she ran into the racetrack rail, fractured her skull, and suffered “massive brain damage.” On February 18, 2006 a five-year-old male dog named EF Big Harry was euthanized after suffering a spinal cord injury that caused him to lose feeling in his tail and legs during a race at Hinsdale Greyhound Park Note: The actual injury reports for these dogs appear as Appendix B of this report. CONCLUSION In total, 716 injuries were reported by commercial dog tracks in New Hampshire in 2005 and 2006, nearly 7 per week. Of these injuries, 22% were career or life ending, while another 74% recorded an average estimated recovery time of 4.4 weeks. 2 Ages of individual dogs were obtained from the Greyhound Breeding and Racing Database.
