In the following report, you will find information related to commercial dog 

racing in New Hampshire. Currently, dog races are authorized at three facilities in 

our state: Seabrook Greyhound Park, Hinsdale Greyhound Park, and the Lodge at 

Belmont. 

This report documents official injury reports provided to the public by the 

New Hampshire Pari-Mutuel Commission, which is charged with regulating dog 

racing. According to the Commission, over the past two years more than 700 dogs 

have been injured while racing in New Hampshire, including dogs that suffered 

broken bones and paralysis. 

Also included is a series of photographs that depict conditions inside local 

commercial dog tracks. These photographs were taken in 2006 by the Pari-Mutuel 

Commission and obtained through public information requests. 

Dogs play an important role in our lives, and deserve to be protected from 

individuals and industries that would do them harm. As the state considers the 

future of commercial dog racing, it is important that facts relative to the dogs 

themselves be a central part of the debate.

weigh policy decisions regarding commercial dog racing.

REPORT: 

Dogs Injured While Racing in 

New Hampshire, 2005-2006 

INTRODUCTION 

In July 2004 the New Hampshire Legislature approved House Bill 520, requiring that commercial dog 

tracks report on all dogs injured while racing in the state. This requirement appears as RSA 284, 

Section 14-d. 

The following is a review of all injury reports for calendar years 2005 and 2006. 

716 REPORTED INJURIES 

According to state records, over the past two years more than 700 dogs have been injured while racing 

in New Hampshire, including dogs that suffered broken bones, torn muscles, and paralysis.

Injury Category Descriptions: 

 

 

 

 

Laceration includes abrasions, cuts, bruising, puncture and bite wounds. 

Muscle Tear includes sprains, strains, ruptures, and dropped or pulled muscles. 

Dislocation includes luxation, separation of bones, and severed bones. 

Other includes paralysis, trauma, pinched nerves, bleeding, bruising, infection, limp, swelling, 

tendonitis, inflammation or myositis, spiked webs, soreness, and “jammed.”

COMPARISON OF INJURIES AT NEW HAMPSHIRE DOG TRACKS 

Records indicate that more injuries occurred at Seabrook than at Hinsdale, even though Seabrook was 

only in operation for 17 months in 2005 and 2006, while Hinsdale was in operation for 24 months.

per month as Belmont.

A total of 527 reports (74% of submissions) specified an estimated recovery time. Based on these 

reports, the average recovery rate equaled 4.4 weeks. 1 

An additional 160 reports (22% of submissions) indicated that dogs either:

On October 12, 2006 a three-year-old 2 male dog named Kup’s Denali was euthanized at Hinsdale 

Greyhound Park after breaking his left hind leg in three places during a race. 

On October 11, 2006 a one-year-old male dog named UMR Abbott was euthanized at Hinsdale 

Greyhound Park after suffering a deep laceration from jumping into the racetrack rail during a race. 

On September 21, 2006 a three-year-old female dog named Kaycar Diane died unexpectedly half 

an hour after a race at Hinsdale Greyhound Park. 

On September 21, 2006 a three-year old female dog named Drivenbypeaches was euthanized 

after suffering a “fracture and severe injury” to her right hind leg during a race at Hinsdale 

Greyhound Park. 

On September 15, 2006 a two-year-old female dog named Corkys Messkan was euthanized after 

suffering multiple deep cuts over her entire body at the Lodge at Belmont. 

On August 25, 2006 a two-year-old male dog named AMF Ghost Rider was euthanized after 

colliding with another dog during a race at Seabrook Greyhound Park and shattering his elbow. 

On June 7, 2006 a four-year-old female dog named Femme Sirius died during a race at Hinsdale 

Greyhound Park when she collided with another dog entering the first turn and suffered a broken 

neck. 

On May 19, 2006 a three-year-old male dog named Strycova was euthanized after a bone in his 

left front leg was broken so severely it was “sheared in half” during a race at Seabrook Greyhound 

Park. 

On April 22, 2006 a one-year-old female dog named Amber died during a race at Seabrook 

Greyhound Park when she ran into the racetrack rail, fractured her skull, and suffered “massive 

brain damage.” 

On February 18, 2006 a five-year-old male dog named EF Big Harry was euthanized after suffering 

a spinal cord injury that caused him to lose feeling in his tail and legs during a race at Hinsdale 

Greyhound Park 

Note: The actual injury reports for these dogs appear as Appendix B of this report. 

CONCLUSION 

In total, 716 injuries were reported by commercial dog tracks in New Hampshire in 2005 and 2006, 

nearly 7 per week. 

Of these injuries, 22% were career or life ending, while another 74% recorded an average estimated 

recovery time of 4.4 weeks.

HORSE AND DOG RACING 

Pari-Mutuel Commission 

Section 284:14-d 

284:14-d Records of Greyhound Injuries. – 

I. The commission shall maintain accurate records and statistics regarding injuries to greyhounds. The 

records shall include the following: 

(a) The greyhound's registered name and right and left ear tattoo numbers. 

(b) The owner, trainer, and kennel operator's name, business address, and telephone number. 

(c) The color, weight, and sex of the greyhound. 

(d) Where the injury took place on a race track or other area. 

(e) If the injury occurred while the greyhound was racing, the race track where the injury occurred, 

along with the distance, grade, race, and post position when the injury occurred; the specific type of 

injury, the cause of the injury, the estimated recovery time, and the location of injury on the greyhound. 

II. All injury forms shall be completed and signed under the pains and penalties of perjury by the race 

track veterinarian, whose signature shall be witnessed by a representative of the commission. Whoever 

knowingly makes a false written statement on an injury form shall be guilty of a violation. A person 

found guilty of knowingly violating this section for a second or subsequent offense shall be guilty of a 

class A misdemeanor. Injury records created and maintained under this section shall be retained by the 

commission for a period of 7 years and shall be made available to the public upon oral or written 

request.
