enhanced arts
programme
application 2011-12
enhanced
arts
programme
2011-12
As a specialist centre for the performing arts, we admit up to 10% of every new Year 7
cohort based upon their potential to excel in a performance subject: dance, drama,
music or any combination of these.
This arrangement offers two main advantages. First, it ensures that the school is
accessible to those young people across Barnet and beyond who might benefit most
from working with our advanced teaching staff. Second, it allows us to identify those
students who have already made exceptional progress in their arts learning, or have
obvious natural aptitude, and so to provide them with an educational experience
tailored to their abilities—this is the Enhanced Arts Programme (EAP).
The EAP offers enrichment activities and extended tuition alongside regular curriculum
studies. Our ambition is to raise confidence, aspiration and attainment at Key Stage 4,
post-16 and in students’ own extra-curricular pursuits. As teachers, we support and
develop the skill, commitment and discipline necessary to succeed in the performing
arts. Students are expected to participate fully in all opportunities to further their
talents, and to pass on the benefits of their further learning through peer-mentoring
and public demonstrations. EAP students are true ambassadors for the arts, in school
and in the wider community.
It is expected that all students accepted on to the EAP will commit to the programme
of activities from Year 7 through to Year 9. Options for Years 10 and 11 will be
considered throughout the programme to establish an access route to the very
highest levels of attainment.
What are the benefits?
~ You will be joining a school where the performing arts have an extremely
high profile, with regular access to expert teaching staff and dedicated facilities
~ You will be placed among a select peer group of talented students, chosen for
their determination to excel in the arts
~ The school will provide a range of opportunities beyond the regular curriculum.
These include: additional performances, professional workshops, extra-curricular
activities, one-to-one tuition, advanced accreditations and trips to shows and
sites of artistic importance
~ You will form the core of our performance ensembles—orchestras, bands, choirs,
dance and drama companies
~ Your experiences will give you greater insight into the world of performing arts,
possible career routes and options; and the knowledge and understanding to
succeed in your chosen field
Who is selected?
Many students apply to the EAP in October of Year 6, with auditions taking place in
November. If successful, students may secure a place at Friern Barnet School, whether or
not they live within the catchment area. Our specialist entry requirements run separately to
the main admissions process managed by the London Borough of Barnet but you will need
to apply to both. If selected for the EAP, this will take precedence over other
considerations.
We are interested in receiving applications from any young person with a passion for
performing, and the enthusiasm to benefit from all available opportunities. Applicants to
the EAP must pass an audition, details of which are outlined below.
Past experience and any previous accreditations will be taken into account but are not
essential. We are not simply looking for the most talented, but for those with the most
obvious aptitude and potential.
Students can, if they want to, apply to specialise in one of the three different disciplines
(dance, drama or music) or to access the full interdisciplinary scope of the programme.
You must complete the EAP application form in full and return it to the school before
Monday October 31st. You can leave it with the main reception team or send it by post to:
Edward Dingwall
Arts Administrator
Friern Barnet School
Hemington Avenue
London
N11 3LS
We will aim to notify you within one week of the deadline whether or not your application
has been approved for audition.
What is required at the audition
~ There are three categories: dance, drama and music. Students will participate in a
group workshop which explores all three disciplines and tests students’ teamwork,
ability to take instruction and general creative capacity. Further details will be
provided on the day
~ Students must then perform one prepared solo piece from one category, lasting no
more than two minutes.
If you have a query regarding any part of the process, please contact Ed Dingwall in the
school’s Arts Office:
