Explore the Medieval Imperial City of Braunschweig
On the occasion of the 800 th Anniversary of the coronation of
Otto IV in the year 1209, Braunschweig celebrates the cultural
and historical ‘Kaiserjahr 2009’ with an exhibition by Lower
Saxony. This exhibition ‘Otto IV – Dream of a Guelph Empire’
will be shown from the 8 th of August to the 8 th of November
2009. Explore the historical old city of Braunschweig. Discover
authentic locations of past times such as the cathedral St. Blasii
with the burial place of Otto IV, the only Guelph Emperor.

Guided city tours
Historic guided city tour
The one and a half hour guided tour visits the Castle Square
and the Old Town Market – two of the most important historical
sites in Braunschweig. With Dankwarderode Castle, St. Blasii
Cathedral, the castle lion and the picturesque ensemble of
historic half-timbered houses, Castle Square is one of the most
beautiful corners of Braunschweig.
1000 steps through time
The evening tour “1000 steps through time - From modern
times to the Middle Ages” reflects highlights from the history
of Braunschweig in an entertaining way. The starting point is
the Residenzschloss (Ducal Palace). The façade of this building
was reconstructed between 2005 and 2007. The prestigious
original building dating from the 19th century was badly damaged
in World War II. From there the tour continues via the newly
rebuilt Bohlweg to the Rathaus (City Hall), a neo-Gothic style
building. Burgplatz brings the tour to its medieval close, which
gives visitors information about the origins of Burg Dankwarderode
(castle) dating from the 12th century - it was formerly
the residence of Henry the Lion - as well as about Dom St. Blasii
(cathedral) and the bronze castle lion, the first large free-standing
sculpture north of the Alps.
