Saxony. This exhibition ‘Otto IV – Dream of a Guelph Empire’<br />
will be shown from the 8 th of August to the 8 th of November<br />

Historic guided city tour<br />
The one and a half hour guided tour visits the Castle Square<br />
and the Old Town Market – two of the most important historical<br />
sites <strong>in</strong> Braunschweig. With Dankwarderode Castle, St. Blasii<br />
Cathedral, the castle lion and the picturesque ensemble of<br />
historic half-timbered houses, Castle Square is one of the most<br />
beautiful corners of Braunschweig.<br />
1000 steps through time<br />
The even<strong>in</strong>g tour “1000 steps through time - From modern<br />
times to the Middle Ages” reflects highlights from the history<br />
of Braunschweig <strong>in</strong> an enterta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g way. The start<strong>in</strong>g po<strong>in</strong>t is<br />
the Residenzschloss (Ducal Palace). The façade of this build<strong>in</strong>g<br />
was reconstructed between 2005 and 2007. The prestigious<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>al build<strong>in</strong>g dat<strong>in</strong>g from the 19th century was badly damaged<br />
<strong>in</strong> World War II. From there the tour cont<strong>in</strong>ues via the newly<br />
rebuilt Bohlweg to the Rathaus (City Hall), a neo-Gothic style<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g. Burgplatz br<strong>in</strong>gs the tour to its me<strong>die</strong>val close, which<br />
gives visitors <strong>in</strong>formation about the orig<strong>in</strong>s of Burg Dankwarderode<br />
(castle) dat<strong>in</strong>g from the 12th century - it was formerly<br />
the residence of Henry the Lion - as well as about Dom St. Blasii<br />
(cathedral) and the bronze castle lion, the first large free-stand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
sculpture north of the Alps.<br />
